Flying Yin-yangs
A green flying yin-yang in Double Dealing Character.
Location

Gensokyo, Underworld, Makai, Lunar Capital

Appearances
Official Games

These independent flying yin-yang objects are stage enemies in the Touhou Project that have first appeared in Subterranean Animism. Their appearance bares the resemblance of the Yin-Yang Orbs, but they likely to have no connexions with the orbs due to Reimu Hakurei destroying these things. It's a total mystery as to what these things are, what they are called or what their purpose is since no-one makes reference to them and they've only appeared in the gaming series.

These things have two outer layer rings that spin on their opposite directions with 5 spherical lights on each ring. There are four known colours to these: blue, green, red and purple. Which colour and what kind of danmaku they shoot depends on the game stage they're on and what difficulty. Also, they mostly use lasers for their danmaku.

Windows Games

Subterranean Animism

The flying yin-yangs made its début on stage 2 of Subterranean Animism, coming in fast and shooting danmaku in the Underworld. On stage 3, they were zooming in from the background and appear to support Yuugi Hoshiguma during her boss battle. They re-appeared on stage 4, coming down in queues and again in stage 5.

Undefined Fantastic Object

The flying yin-yangs make a re-appearance in Undefined Fantastic Object, which can be said that it fits well to have these in this game since it is UFO-themed and that these flying creature do resemble unknown flying objects. On stage 2, they'll appear from a mist and shoot large danmaku at the heroine while homing on them. They were shown to appear in Makai on stage 5, creating a sort of obstacle for the player to dodge.

Ten Desire / Double Dealing Character

The flying yin-yangs again make an appearance in Ten Desires and Double Dealing Character, performing the same way as it did in the previous games.

Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom

The flying yin-yangs make a return in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom on Stage 3 in the Dream World as stage enemies. Although they shouldn't able to access this place physically, ZUN does state in the music comments that these are "just things in each dream," but are still mischievous of them to spread barrages of danmaku despite being in a dream. They're primarily the only stage enemy on Stage 4 at the Lunar Capital, and Sagume Kishin, the midboss and boss of the stage, over-uses them both using spell cards and non-spell cards.
