幻想少女大戦 (Gensou Shoujo Taisen, "Fantasy Maiden Wars") is a four-part Touhou Simulation RPG game based on Super Robot Wars, two parts of which have been released so far.
The first part, E (紅 Kou, Scarlet), is based on the plot of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (Touhou Koumakyou), featuring all characters from that game and some others. The story involves two overlapping routes for Reimu and Marisa, with an unlockable Sakuya route added in the v1.10 patch.
The second part, P (妖 You, Mystic) is based on the plots of Mountain of Faith, Immaterial and Missing Power and Perfect Cherry Blossom (Touhou Youyoumu) in that order, again introducing characters from other games at the same time. You can transfer save data from the previous game, allowing you to retain items, upgrades, and database information as well as gain some bonuses.
The third part, I (永 Ei, Eternal), will be based on Imperishable Night (Touhou Eiyashou) and Silent Sinner in Blue. Due to their plotlines being introduced towards the end of the second part, elements of Subterranean Animism and Undefined Fantastic Object will presumably be included as well.
Gameplay
- Main article: Gameplay
Most of Gensou Shoujo Taisen's gameplay is directly based on that of the Super Robot Wars series, with additional mechanics for danmaku, bombs and spell cards. In addition, some terms are changed to fit the setting - Morale/Will becomes Power, Money becomes Points, Pilot Points become Graze, and the Space terrain becomes Night (though Night modifies other terrains rather than replacing them).
Enemies radiate danmaku fields which reduce the stats of player characters around them - a character can be set to "Focused mode" to avoid the effects of danmaku fields and gain +10% hit rate, but while in this mode they can not move as far and evading an attack merely reduces its damage rather than negating it.
Certain enemies drop bombs when defeated, which can be used as a weak area attack that destroys all danmaku within range until an enemy recreates it.
Major bosses use one or more spell cards when their HP is depleted, which act as separate healthbars, alter their danmaku fields and grant them a new attack. Unlike in the shooting games, bombing during a spell card does not prevent you from capturing it; only "timing out" spell cards denies bonuses, and some spell cards can not even be timed out.
The third game features a version of the Twin Battle System introduced in Super Robot Wars: Original Generations, mirroring the partner system in 東方永夜抄 ~ Imperishable Night, which allows a pair of units to group together and function as one.
Story
The storyline of Gensou Shoujo Taisen more or less follows that of the original Touhou games, but significantly expanded with great amounts of character development and foreshadowing. In addition to the expected casts, the plots work in characters from future games (such as Keine and Nitori being the first allied characters in the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil arc), characters who have never appeared in a game (such as Akyuu) and even characters from the PC-98 games. Similar to Super Robot Wars, some enemy characters who originally appeared only once become recurring bosses who are fought on multiple levels. Unlike Super Robot Wars, almost every named character joins your team after being defeated.
