Notes
- ↑ Ama no Yachimata (天の八衢) - the eight crossroads that Ninigi-no-Mikoto crosssed when he descended from heaven.
- ↑ Sarutahiko is the god who stood at the heavenly crossroads during Ninigi's descent, and guided him by shining light on the mortal world below. He also has a long nose, and is thought to be part of the origin of folklore about tengu.
- ↑ Konoha-gakure (木の葉隠れ) - a technique (often used by fictional ninjas) that uses tree foliage to hide oneself fro view.
- ↑ Nihyaku-Toka (二百十日, 210th day) - One of the 'unlucky days' (厄日, yaku-bi) in Japanese agriculture. Said to often be accompanied by typhoons. "Nihyaku-Toka" means 210 days from Risshun (立春, the first day of spring in the traditional Japanese calendar. (Approximately February 4th).
- ↑ 塞: taken from 塞の神 (sae no kami, "blocking god"), the gods of protecting travellers from danger.
- ↑ 渡御 (togyo) refers to Shinto ceremonies where a shrine's god is paraded through town in a portable vessel. The leader of the parade is often dressed as Sarutahiko.
- ↑ 天孫降臨 (Tenson kourin) - The descent of Amaterasu's grandson Ninigi-no-Mikoto to the mortal world of Ashihara-no-Nakatsukuni.
- ↑ 照國 (terukuni): roughly 'illuminate country'. May refer to how Sarutahiko guided Ninigi-no-Mikoto by shining light on everything between Heaven and the mortal world. May also refer to Amateru-Kuniteruhiko-Hoakari (天照国照彦火明命), the elder brother of Ninigi. In the Kujiki he is referred to as Nigihayahi, and he (rather than Ninigi) is the one to descend to the mortal realm on the stone boat Ame-no-Iwafune.
