Notes
- ↑ 八重裏梅 (yae-ura-ume, "double-flowered reverse plum") and 星梅鉢 (hoshi-umebachi, "star-shaped potted plum") are Japanese family crests. 梅星 (umeboshi, "plum star") is an inversion of the latter, and a play on the identically-pronounced food Umeboshi. 綺羅 refers to beautiful fabric, and 綺羅星 refers to a beautiful array of something reminiscent of a row of stars.
- ↑ 2.0 2.1 Yasoba-no-shimizu is a spring in Sakaide, Kagawa where Emperor Sutoku's body is said to have been preserved for 21 days after his death. A temple to him has been built there as well.
- ↑ A reference to the Waterfall of Nine Heavens, as well as the Buddhist realm where Tenma is said to live (六天 / "sixth heaven").
- ↑ 4.0 4.1 Reference to the Great Fire of Angen, a massive fire within Heiankyou that occurred in the Angen era.
- ↑ 天夢流星伝 (tenmu ryuusei den): a pun on 天魔流星伝 (tenma ryuusei den), the subtitle of the RPG Hokuto no Ken 5.
- ↑ 6.0 6.1 6.2 6.3 Emperor Sutoku wrote copies of the Five Mahayana Sutras while in exile towards the end of his life, which he sent to be preserved in Kyoto. Fearing that the scriptures (written in blood, according to some accounts) were cursed, officials sent them back in tatters. Sutoku then bit his own tongue off in fury, wrote curses on the sutras in his blood, and grew his hair and nails out wildly for the remainder of his life.
- ↑ 魔道エコー (madou ekō) is a pun on part of the phrase Sutoku wrote on the sutras in his blood: "I read these sutras in dedication to the path of evil." / この経を魔道に回向す (kono kyou wo madou ni ekousu).
- ↑ 8.0 8.1 天舞 ("heavenly dance") is pronounced "tenbu", a possible pun on "Tenmu".
