Reimu Hakurei (博麗 霊夢 Hakurei Reimu) is the main character of most Touhou Project games. As the miko of Hakurei, she manages the border of Gensokyo and exterminates youkai.
General Information
In Touhou Project, excluding Shoot the Bullet, Double Spoiler, and Fairy Wars, she appeared in all games as a playable character. Furthermore, there are also games where she appeared as both a playable character and as a boss (Lotus Land Story, Imperishable Night, Immaterial and Missing Power, and Scarlet Weather Rhapsody). Since she was in the omake.txt she also came forth in Shoot the Bullet and although she was not a playable character in Double Spoiler, she appeared as an EX level photographic subject.
Since she was the lone main character in the very first game, Highly Responsive to Prayers, when Marisa Kirisame was not there, she boasts of being the character to appeared the most number of times. (Provided, as opposed to how Marisa appeared in Fairy Wars as an EX boss, she only appeared in the ending, and since it wasn't much of an appearance, so if one takes that into account, then she would be equal in the number of times she showed up.)
Marisa is always the one in charge of the icon, and Reimu is always the one in charge of title screen.
She is the miko of the shrine called the Hakurei Shrine that is located on the border between Gensokyo and the outside world. She is moderately tall. In chapter 7 of Strange and Bright Nature Deity, she was shown using chopsticks with her left hand, and it was written that she was left-handed[2]. She held a pen with her right hand in Subterranean Animism. Therefore, she is actually ambidextrous, or possibly she might just be used to writing words with her right hand.
She is the one who established the Spell Card rules widely used in Gensokyo.[3] The role of the miko of Hakurei is to manage the big border called the Great Hakurei Border and protect it, and no matter what, the miko must not allow any youkai to encroach upon it and remove it. Because of this, youkai are not able to attack the miko of Hakurei, and therefore the meaning of her existence has faded, and so by these rules, this has been resolved, so that it would be no problem for youkai to fight with the miko of Hakurei.[3]
The state of the position of the miko of Hakurei and its previous generations have not been officially specified much, but the following statements are things that seem to be related to this. In Silent Sinner in Blue, when Reimu was not coming back to the shrine for some time, Aya said, "how many times has it been that we needed to search for a new miko?" In Shanghai Alice Correspondence, Rinnosuke Morichika said "now that you mention it, although other humans have been called the predecessors of the miko of Hakurei, you cannot call Reimu much of a 'miko' since she flat-out doesn't do her work. You reap what you sow. However, as for the predecessors, you cannot call them anything but 'miko.' I even forgot their names."
Although she is one of the successive generations of miko, and although she lacks a sense of danger and lacks training, her true strength is quite considerable. Although she herself definitely does not use these powers to boast about them, somehow or the other she uses them.[4][5]
Usually, when she goes and resolves incidents, it is because she can on longer bear the effects of it on herself, but there were also cases where those around her like Yukari Yakumo told her to, which she reluctantly went along (Imperishable Night and Subterranean Animism).
She also made a guest appearance in the first Seihou Project, Shuusou Gyoku. Although this was ZUN's doing, contribution in terms of characters and music from Touhou Project was thus implemented. Although in PC-98 her name was shown as 博麗靈夢, from Shuusou Gyoku onwards it was changed to 博麗霊夢.
Although in the games she leaves the impression of a carefree personality, she has the characteristic of having "slow movement." Similarly, her characteristics would be appropriate represented by the facts that "the time after the bomb (which eats everything) deals damage is long, and it easily gets hazy as to when she gets hit by a bullet" "when she appeared as an enemy, she uses a mess of regular danmaku," and "since her bullets are homing, it is not necessary to have accurate aim."
Concept
Name
Reimu's full name is Reimu Hakurei (博麗 霊夢). The characters for Reimu's last name Hakurei (博麗) literally mean something along the lines of "esteemed companion". The first word Haku (博) means "wide" or "exposition" while Rei (麗) means "lovely", "graceful", and "beautiful". Her first name Reimu (霊夢) means "revelatory dream" or "a vision"; the first word, Rei (霊) means "spirit" or "soul" while Yume (夢) is read Mu and means "dream".
The surname Hakurei (博麗) is also another name for sake. This may be because the maker of the Touhou series, ZUN, is quite the connoisseur of "spirits", so much so that fans often speculate over whether ZUN might be or have been an alcoholic.
Appearance
From Highly Responsive to Prayers to Mystic Square, Reimu is depicted as having purple eyes and long purple hair. She wears red and white clothes resembling a traditional shrine maiden outfit, as well as a large red ribbon tied to her hair. From Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream to Mystic Square, Reimu is depicted holding a gohei.
From Embodiment of Scarlet Devil onward, Reimu's hair color changes from purple to black/dark brown. Her hair is short in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and Imperishable Night and at least shoulder-length in the other games, and her eye color changes from purple to dark red/brownish gray (except for the fighting games Immaterial and Missing Power and Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, where they are blue). Her outfit tends to consist of a red and white dress remotely similar to a shrine maiden outfit with detached sleeves leaving her shoulders uncovered; a large, red bow tied to her hair; a neckerchief (which is red in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and Perfect Cherry Blossom, white in Imperishable Night, blue in Subterranean Animism and Phantasmagoria of Flower View, and yellow in all the other games); and a gohei.
In Ten Desires, Reimu is portrayed as having brown eyes and brown hair at above-shoulder length, with two longer sections bordering her face. She wears red and white clothes remotely similar to a shrine maiden outfit with detached sleeves leaving her shoulders uncovered. Also, the bottom of her skirt has frills and is shorter than in previous appearances. She wears a yellow neckerchief as well as a large red and white frilly ribbon attached to her hair, the latter having a flower shaped insignia on its sides. She carries a gohei with many paper seals attached to it in streamers with her as well.
On Ten Desires' main menu, Reimu is shown with longer hair, a longer skirt, and a longer gohei.
Personality
Her personality is simple but is not double-sided. Her human emotions are tempestuous, and she possess a wondrous atmosphere about her that seems to attract others regardless of whether they are human or youkai. Above everything, she hates spending great effort in striving for or dealing with things. It is because she does not believe that hard work pays off.
Although she has no interest in equality, since her job is to exterminate youkai, she more or less takes on a stern pose against youkai. Furthermore, even if it is not a youkai, she does not go easy on those who cause incidents. For example, even if it was a human, she would not go easy on them. Although it is especially easy for youkai with strong power to like her, she herself is not particularly interested in either humans or youkai. Regarding anyone, she does not see them as a comrade. As there are a great number of humans and youkai around her, even though there are instances where she works together with someone else, she usually does things by herself alone. It is not known if she is a cold human being, but all of the aforementioned has been officially stated. However, it does fit with the general "cool" image in Japanese society of the "mysterious shrine maiden."
However, outside of the games, if one turns one's eyes to look at her daily scenery, she repeatedly has parties in the endings, and furthermore in Sangetsusei and Curiosities of Lotus Asia it can be seen that she has become quite close to Marisa Kirisame and Rinnosuke Morichika etc., showing that there are various things that can cast doubt on the official characterization.
Additionally, there were some things that showed that she indeed had become close to others. For example, in Subterranean Animism, according to Satori Komeiji who read her mind, it seems that she has put trust in Yukari Yakumo. As another example, in Chapter 7 of Strange and Bright Nature Deity, she made tempura from the sprout of an angelica tree and had an evening meal with Marisa.
In Silent Sinner in Blue, she helped the fainted moon rabbit within her compound that she even acted like a physician, borrowing her futon without sleeping herself, thus showing a soft side of her. However, she did make the veil her own at her convenience.
It can be said that she resembles Alice Margatroid in not showing her true power since there would be nothing afterwards if she lost. Furthermore, as in chapter 6 of Strange and Bright Nature Deity, since she participates in the Usoae Shinji (鷽替神事) (a festival where birds gather to peck at all the lies that one has uttered until now), one might therefore think that Reimu and Alice do not tell lies often in order not to be pecked at by the bullfinches.
In Curiosities of Lotus Asia, she made a surprise attack on a youkai who was simply enjoying her book, when the counterattack tore her shirt, she put on Rinnosuke's clothing at her convenience, stole the youkai's book and sold it to Rinnosuke, receiving someone else's due. Thus, compared to Marisa, the one usually considered to be one to do things at her convenience, she is considered by Rinnosuke to have more of this negative personality trait. Nonetheless, she did show a positive side of herself when later on, she helped by warding off ghosts free of charge, worried and inquired when she heard that Rinnosuke was merely eking out a living, and had a misgiving about Marisa Kirisame taking stuff from the store without permission that she reported it.
As for how she calls other people by her first name, like calling Rinnosuke "Rinnosuke-san," it is not because of close friendship, (since their relation would have been more like calling him "Morichika-san" or "Kourindou-san"), but due to her personality that for sure she calls him by attaching "-san" to his first name. (The only times when Reimu uses "-san" are for Rinnosuke and Meira, and in Meira's case, she mistook her for a male.)
She also displayed unusual behavior when she left her personal-use teacup at Kourindou - it does not seem like even Rinnosuke knows why she did this.
Since she is usually at the edge of Gensokyo, it is a daily routine for her to look at the sky of Gensokyo, drinking tea, lacking any sense of danger. Carefree, optimistic, and a bit odd at times, she is well liked by human and youkai alike despite her supposed coldness.
Abilities
- Ability to the extent of flying in the air
This is as literally stated. Almost all the characters who have appeared in the games have the ability to fly in the air, so the fact that she has this ability would be a matter. In the PC-98 era, she was unable fly by herself and used Genjii to ride on instead to fly, but it seems that from the very start of the windows era, Reimu was shown to be able to fly independently. However, since the Genjii thing is only a PC-98 thing, it can be ignored.[6][7]
- Fantasy Heaven
Her secret technique is Fantasy Heaven (夢想天生 Musou Tensei), which is extreme in many ways. With it, she is able to float in midair while invulnerable, and if this is not just play (in which case there would be a time limit to this), nobody would be able to win against her. From the explanation of this spell card, one would thus know that attacks against Reimu would then not hit at all, and is thus of a resistance type. It is probably because of this move that when ZUN was asked, "who is the strongest in Gensokyo," he answered, "isn't it Reimu?" (said before Mountain of Faith was released).[8] He said in the same talkshow that it had something to do with DNA (デオキシリボ核酸).[9] In The Grimoire of Marisa, it was stated that when Reimu uses "Fantasy Heaven", she goes into a half-transparent state with eyes closed, automatically shooting danmaku. Originally, it was not a spell, but Marisa playfully added a name to it. Otherwise, there is no chance of winning. ZUN himself has hinted that it is a parody of Kenshiro's Musou Tensei (無想転生), which means "blank mind reincarnation," and if Reimu ever meets another with the same ability, then the meaning of danmaku would then be lost and it would be then become a graceful fist-fight.
This is from Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, although there are no details about this other than what is written above, but one would think that it comprises things like paper charms ("ofuda"), zabuton, and other border-related things. In Curiosities of Lotus Asia, when she was able to see the spirit that dwelled in the bone from the time when it was still living, she answered, "I am a miko". and things like that, stating powers which would seem to be powers as a miko. Also, in Silent Sinner in Blue, she was able use a technique to summon one of the Yaoyorozu gods and embody it in her own body (although there is a possibility that this may yet be another ability).
In Curiosities of Lotus Asia, concerning the summoning of other gods, Marisa Kirisame took charms from an unprepared Reimu that sealed many things that Reimu sealed previously, and various things resulted like illness spreading. At that time, Reimu, using a piece of a jar more than a thousand years old that she borrowed from Rinnosuke Morichika, borrowed power from the good fellow man's god, and possessing that power visited the village house by house.
Reimu almost never, from this characteristic, puts much effort into difficult strenuous training. However, from having a good natural sense of things due to her nature, which is more than enough, even without training in martial arts or sorcery, her strength is to the extent that one might not think she is human.[4] Although she is essentially able to use various strange abilities, she does not use them to boast about them.[5]
- Ability to the extent of manipulating auras
The details of this ability are unknown, but this was stated in the omake.txt of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.
Processions
- Donation Box
Reimu has a donation box outside the Hakurei Shrine for visiters to put money in for the Miko. In Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, it has been said that pretty much nobody goes to the shrine, which has been interpreted to mean that she gets pretty much no donations. "So I don't carry money with me. Although there won't be any even if I go back to my residence" was said to Rinnosuke Morichika in Curiosities of Lotus Asia indicating that she actually might not have any money. Since she goes to the Human Village to buy stuff, though, it does not seem that she always has none.
In reality, although donations to the shrine is a sign of faith to the god there, other than expanding and developing costs for the shrine in order to increase faith, it also contains the meaning of the living expenses of the miko who is essential, and so it has a direct connection to why a miko would worry. (Furthermore, Reimu herself does not know what god is enshrined at the Hakurei Shrine).
In Immaterial and Missing Power, she has occasionally quoted to Sakuya Izayoi saying "By the way, the offertory box is over there", "Ahh, never mind the amount. A one-yen bill would be enough", "By the way, the offertory box is over there" and "the wonderful offertory box is over there". This perhaps indicates that she likes the offertory box, as it is a frank request. She also said "I wonder if holding services for dolls on the side is profitable?" to Alice Margatroid.
It has been stated that in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense that in the past, no one could look forward to putting in donations to the Hakurei Shrine, so for generations the miko of Hakurei has made a living by resolving incidents. In Imperishable Night, since she resolved the incident upon Yukari Yakumo's request, compensation has been agreed upon. In Subterranean Animism, she said "we've got a cart for fires at the shrine". There is a possibility that this is due to the loss of household tools due to the destruction of the shrine in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody.
In actuality, due to the grace of the high civilization of youkai, she seems to live more prosperously than the regular humans of the Human Village. To put it together, it could be interpreted that although not much money itself is left, she has abundant food and household belongings.
PC-98 Reimu
As the miko of a small shrine the "Hakurei Shrine" in an eastern country, she has spiritual power by nature, but since she does not have enough training, she brandishes the weapon, the Yin-Yang Orb, without manipulating it. It possesses the "power of Hakurei," the Ying-Yang Orb's true power, which can drawn from it.
Her personality is optimistic and easy-going, and she enjoys the various strange things that occur around her. In times of abnormality, she completely does not do things like worry, and one would think that it would be because of her spiritual power.
Emotionally she is somewhat simple, and so is teased by Marisa Kirisame.
Attacking with ofuda, she releases spiritual energy as a "spirit attack," and fighting with a technique called "spiritual rapid fire," she exterminates youkai with the power of the Ying-Yang Orb.
Since in Marisa's ending in Lotus Land Story, as Marisa also exterminated Youkai, she said to Marisa, "it would not be any good to interfere with my work" thus sensing "isn't it dangerous?" but immediately afterwards one hears "who was the chief person this time?" and said "this time I also fought~." In the end, the PC-98 Reimu also likes youkai extermination.

Shortly after the events of Perfect Cherry Blossom, Aya Shameimaru attends a flower viewing at the Hakurei Shrine, where she meets Reimu (who is in a foul mood because no one wants to help her clean up after the flower viewing is over). Aya plies her with sake and questions her about the incident, commenting in the article that "Reimu just seems to be a laid-back drunkard". In the follow-up interview, Reimu claims Aya's paper is full of lies and insists her account of the incident is true, though Aya still doesn't recognize Reimu's deeds.
Relationships
Reimu knows a lot of people since she goes out and resolves incidents. She has interacted with almost every other character that has ever made a physical appearance, with the exception of the Unnamed Giant Catfish, Renko Usami, and Maribel Hearn. The first meeting involved a battle with the exception of Watatsuki no Toyohime, Rinnosuke Morichika (presumably), Reisen II, Hieda no Akyuu, and Kasen Ibaraki. She is often visited afterwards by most of the youkai and humans she meets, most of which are friendly to her. Reimu is stated to treat everyone the same, and most of her views on others can be described as slightly apathetic to annoyed.
Reimu's best friend is likely Marisa Kirisame, who spends a lot of her time at the shrine. They are there together the majority of the time in various print works, prologues, and extra stage prologues, hanging out together and discussing or attending the latest events in Gensokyo. Reimu has known Marisa since Story of Eastern Wonderland, where Mima had Marisa fight Reimu. Their friendship may have started soon after that, as in all of the bad endings, Marisa decides she needs to train more, and drags Reimu along to train with her, much to Reimu's chagrin.
Kasen has become a regular at the shrine lately and acts as a mentor and sometimes guardian towards Reimu, whom she fears is too concerned with worldly desires.
Despite being the priestess of a rival shrine, Sanae is on friendly terms with Reimu and appears frequently in Wild and Horned Hermit alongside Reimu and Marisa. She came on a bit strongly when she and Reimu first met, but she really thought she was helping the Hakurei Shrine out by attempting to get it to switch gods to Kanako Yasaka. After Mountain of Faith, Sanae's offered to help Reimu as a fellow miko to gather faith for the shrine, and appears to have been friends with Reimu since then.
Reimu used a turtle as a flying aid until the end of Mystic Square; that turtle was Genjii.
She also obtains a robotic maid named Ruukoto as a servant at the end of Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream though no reference has been made to it since.
Mima is an evil spirit who haunts the surroundings of the Hakurei Shrine, after many confrontations and being resealed by Reimu, she decides to spend her days making fun of the shrine maiden.
Reimu is familiar with Rinnosuke Morichika, a shopkeeper who owns Kourindou, who she sometimes visits to hang out or for wares (and sometimes shoplifts).
Suika Ibuki, who often freeloads her shrine after the events of Immaterial and Missing Power is also is her ally during Subterranean Animism.
Despite her antagonistic personality, Yukari mentors Reimu by pushing her into increasing her spiritual power such as learning how to invoke the gods in Silent Sinner in Blue. She also occasionally seeks Reimu's assistance in resolving incidents in Imperishable Night and Subterranean Animism.
Aya Shameimaru, the tengu reporter was also her ally during the events of Subterranean Animism.
Reimu is often the target of their pranks, and Reimu tends to exterminate them on sight whenever she catches them (unless Marisa is escorting them). As of Oriental Sacred Place, the three fairies have moved into a tree near the Hakurei Shrine and become Reimu's neighbors, increasing the amount of pranks even more. Reimu does not know which tree they're living in (it's a tree making up part of the Hakurei Border that was struck by lightning) and wants to know so she can evict them. She's learned new things about fairies from interacting with them, like how fairies live in actual homes (previously Reimu assumed fairies wandered everywhere like locusts) and read newspapers.
Reimu views Byakuren and her temple as a rival of sorts to Reimu and the Hakurei Shrine (In Ten Desires, Toyosatomimi no Miko points out that she's friendly towards her, although Reimu says they're religious rivals, she does not seem to deny it). In one of her Undefined Fantastic Object endings, Reimu is depressed at how quickly Byakuren's temple is picking up followers compared to her own shrine. By Strange and Bright Nature Deity, Reimu is mad at the temple for stealing away her shrine's followers (ignoring that her shrine never had (m)any followers in the first place). Byakuren seems unaware of this.
Using her ability, she and Reimu Hakurei gathered worshipers. Reimu was however being manipulated by the fox and Kasen stated that there may have been another practitioner to the fox. Whether this is true or not is unknown, but becuase it has been feeding on Reimu's will power and wealth, Reimu can be seen as the practitioner to the kuda-gitsune according to Kasen's knowledge.

Trivia
- She appeared on the cover of all the PC-98 games, from the first game to the fifth.
- Reimu seems to be scared before and after the boss battle with the Five Magic Stones, thus making this the only ever time that Reimu was scared and/or afraid of a boss before and after the battle.
- In Lotus Land Story, when you clear Easy Mode with Reimu and just before the Name Registry screen shows up, you get a Congratulation screen with a drawing of her wearing an outfit that very closely resembles her outfit from Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (save for non-detached sleeves).
- Most of her theme from Lotus Land Story sounds similar to Elis and Kikuri's theme from Highly Responsive to Prayers, "Magic Mirror".
- She makes an official appearance as "Flying Maiden" in Graffiti Kingdom, as ZUN was involved in the production of it.
- It is originally stated that she lives alone at the shrine, but other rarely seen characters (Mima and Shingyoku) are known to stay there or near there as well.
- In Imperishable Night, Reimu is the only one whose partner doesn't mention the danger of the full moon.
- Reimu's Last Word 「夢想天生」 "Fantasy Heaven" (Pronounced: Musou Tensei) is a homonym of 「無想転生」 "Unconscious Transmigration of Souls" (Also pronounced: Musou Tensei), Kenshiro's ultimate technique in Hokuto no Ken. In Touhou Hisoutensoku, if you activate Fantasy Heaven successfully in a 3rd round, a remix of "Mystical Oriental Love Consultation" will play with the sounds of the Fatal KO theme from the Hokuto no Ken fighting game, fitting because activation of the said Spell Card means the opponent is certainly already dead! Because of this it is now known as the Hakurei Hyakuretsu Ken to some fans.
- In Touhou Hisoutensoku, one of her alternative palettes looks similar to VIVIT, the heroine of the Seihou Project. Also, one of her palettes seems to be another maid homage, Ruukoto, or possibly Sanae Kochiya's colours. The palette also seems to resemble Mima from Highly Responsive to Prayers. Her white/light gray palette seems to resemble Toki from Hokuto no Ken.
- When playing Yukari's story mode in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, Reimu breaks down in tears in the ending after Yukari defeats Tenshi and reduces the Hakurei Shrine to rubble for the second time, with Sakuya and Youmu looking on helplessly (although Suika offers to help rebuild it). This marks the first and only time where she is seen crying in a storyline scenario.
- Reimu's Yin-Yang Orb exhibits some strange powers, aside from helping her attack her enemies. The greatest powers of the Hakurei Yin-Yang Orb are:
- Even if you eat sweets, you won't get fat
- One of your favorite aromas can be given off
- The yin-yang orb can be disguised as a cat
- The shrine maiden at the end of Dolls in Pseudo Paradise is probably Reimu. She has Reimu's title, "Shrine Maiden of Paradise" (and her personality), and according to Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red's Music Column, the shrine maiden in the song that accompanies the ending section is Reimu (so basically, this shrine maiden has Reimu's song and title). However, only the shrine maiden at the end is referred to as the shrine maiden of paradise. Thus it is possible that the shrine maiden seen in the first half of the story is a different person altogether.
- A "13th Shrine Maiden" signs off the Gensokyo Record in Perfect Cherry Blossom's prologue. ZUN has stated in an e-mail that the Gensokyo Record is unreliable (for one thing, the writing style of each section shows it was written by a different person each time), thus "there is a high possibility that Reimu is not the 13th Hakurei shrine maiden." (technically, this also means there is no proof that the person who wrote that section of the record is a shrine maiden at all).
- It is shown in Oriental Sacred Place that the shrine sometimes gets various donations (including wine) from unknown sources (implied to be from the Outside World, as the Hakurei Shrine lies on the border) and Yukari is shown in Oriental Sacred Place to sneak yen donations into the offering box when Reimu isn't looking.
- Although Reimu has successfully resolved the incidents in each major Touhou game, it's possible that her win rate throughout the actual events of the games was not 100%. Perfect Memento in Strict Sense states that Reimu likes to request rematches until she finally wins (something which is allowed under the spell card rules). In essence, Reimu apparently has had to use a few continues every once in a while, but she still manages to get a good ending.
Fandom
- Destitute: she is called 貧乏巫女 (Binbou miko, lit. "destitute miko"). In Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, it has been said that pretty much nobody goes to the shrine. Thus, it has been a common interpretation that she gets 0 donations.
- Nothing special about her appearance except armpits, which must be appealed to: Since her clothes exposes her armpits, she is commonly called "waki miko." (腋巫女, meaning "armpit miko") Upon hiding her armpits, anyone would notice at once, and before her back or chest or foot, her armpits are always the first thing appealed to. Although her clothing comes from Rinnosuke Morichika, it is unknown who designs them.
- Heretic: other than the idea that "money is dirty" related to the "destitute" meme, in the original her personality is comparatively severe (in youkai extermination, she has no mercy), so she is sometimes called "Yakuza miko."
Furthermore, upon facing off with Toyohime in Silent Sinner in Blue, she used the words "if one doesn't shoot down and slay without one remaining, if there is impurity on the moon, danmaku shall be scattered" etc., said to be a little severe and without mercy, so she occasionally does not spare using unfair measures. - Taoreimu, Dareimu, etc.: a defeated Reimu is sometimes called "Taoreimu" (from 倒れる), a hit Reimu is sometimes called "Dareimu" (from 打), and an angry Reimu is sometimes called "Buchigireimu (from ぶち切れる), thus giving her shiritori-like names.
- Concerning the god enshrined at the shrine: Rinnosuke knows who the god enshrined at the shrine is. However, since Reimu is completely uninterested in whatever god is enshrined, he did not say at all. Because of this, it has been fanon to interpret this to mean that the enshrined god is Mima or Gensokyo itself etc.
- Oni Miko: When she shows her true strength, she becomes "Oni Miko" (鬼巫女).
- Zombie Reimu: The drastic change in the color of Reimu's skin tone over the course of the Windows games (most noticeable in Mountain of Faith, in which her skin appears yellowish and almost jaundiced) raised eyebrows and led to a number of jokes and dubious theories, the most common of which is that she is actually an undead zombie.
- Flight on Genji: Although Reimu is able to fly independently, she is still shown in a number of fanworks to still be sitting on Genjii, presumably either to be a show off or to have "extra power". The most notable fanwork to feature this is Touhou Soccer Moushuuden.
- JoJo association: In the trend of JoJo associations, it appears Reimu is paired with Josuke Higashikata, the reason here being that Josuke's name has the characters for Touhou in it (東方仗助 for Josuke, 東方 for Touhou). Although personality wise, he could be closer to Marisa.
