Sumireko Usami (宇佐見 菫子 Usami Sumireko) is a human from the Outside World with psychic powers (ESP). She is the first president of the secret Sealing Club.
General Information
Sumireko first appeared as the Final Boss of Urban Legend in Limbo, who eventually becomes a playable character of the same game.
Personality
Sumireko is a high schooler with somewhat of a superiority complex. She considers herself above her peers and can't stand to be near those she sees as beneath her. Following her defeat and the end of her Incident, Sumireko gains a sense of respect for the people of Gensokyo and decides to pursure friendship with them.
Abilities
- Using ESP
She is a strong psychic, an individual capable of various powers associated with the paranormal, including but seemingly not limited to levitation, pyrokinesis, hydrokinesis, telekinesis, psychokinesis, teleportation and astral projection.
Background Information
Name
Her full name is Sumireko Usami (宇佐見 菫子 Usami Sumireko). Usami (宇佐見) uses the same writing as Renko Usami's surname and it is known to be an actual name in Japanese. Sumireko (菫子) literally means "violet child", and is also similar to how Renko's name means "lotus child", as both take their names from flowers.
Design
Sumireko has brown eyes and shoulder-length brown hair tied in pigtails. On her head is a black hat with a white bow along with red framed glasses. She wears a school uniform consisting of a purple plaid skirt and matching sleeveless top (resembling a jumper dress), over a long-sleeved white blouse and a black bolo tie with a clasp shaped like a "Quimbaya airplane". Along with this, she wears white socks with bows and black shoes. Sumireko generally carries zener cards and a tablet computer marked with a hexagram on the back. During the events of Urban Legend in Limbo she also wears white gloves and a black, high-collared cloak with a red interior inscribed with runes.
In Wild and Horned Hermit it is shown that she brings her hat to school, where she hangs it at the side of her desk. Her summer uniform appears nearly identical to her winter one, but with shorter and looser sleeves.
Sumireko's Appearances
- Urban Legend in Limbo
Sumireko is the main antagonist of Urban Legend in Limbo and the final boss in most of the characters' scenarios in story mode.
She manages to break through the Great Hakurei Barrier by using some power from the Occult Balls, which are special stones gathered from Mystery Spots outside of Gensokyo. She attempts to go around and explore, but this method of entering Gensokyo - known as being "spirited away", when a being from the outside world somehow enters Gensokyo - turns out not to be permanent and severely limits her time there before she is suddenly ejected from Gensokyo along with the occult balls. Learning from this, Sumireko starts with brief excursions into Gensokyo to learn more about the fantasy world, appearing to anyone who catches sight of her as an ominous black shadow (an apparent side-effect of directly channeling the power of the occult orbs).
After gaining sufficient knowledge of how Gensokyo and the occult balls work, Sumireko devises a plan: spread rumors of the occult ball's powers, then scatter them around Gensokyo for its residents to find before being ejected. Once the balls are gathered, they warp back to the Outside World - along with anyone holding them, whereupon after a few moments the "spiriting away" works in reverse and drags the Gensokyo native back inside, but it's enough time for Sumireko to learn about them. She then re-enters Gensokyo and scatters the balls again, thus beginning the occult incident of Urban Legend in Limbo.
Sumireko's first encounter with the game's playable cast is in her "shadow" form, with Reimu Hakurei, who happens to be in the vicinity when Sumireko is entering Gensokyo. Reimu decides to strike first, only to be repelled with little effort on Sumireko's part before she gets away. Despite the close encounter, her plan works out quite well for a while, and although she is baffled at why everyone who comes out of Gensokyo ends up fighting her, she enjoys it nonetheless; of note is Fujiwara no Mokou, who became fast friends with Sumireko through their battle to the point where she lent her a deck of Zener cards.
Because Sumireko is powerful enough to fend off Gensokyo's residents and because the occult balls always find their way back to her upon being gathered together, she could repeat this as many times as she desires... at least, until Mamizou Futatsuiwa catches wind of the incident and instigates a counterattack. Having studied the occult balls (notably that they can only change hands through battle) and Gensokyo's entry procedures herself, Mamizou devises her own plan to stop Sumireko: she claims to have Gensokyo's own occult ball in her possession when challenging Sumireko, claiming it would allow her permanent and unimpeded travel between Gensokyo and the Outside World. Mamizou then throws the fight to hand over the ball - actually a transformed tanuki - and crafts an elaborate farce to make Sumireko believe it works. In reality, Mamizou has tricked Sumireko into entering Gensokyo the proper way, which is permanent and works both ways, but neglects to tell Sumireko exactly how to use it to get back out, trapping her in Gensokyo so that everyone can teach her a lesson.
Sumireko's story mode in Urban Legend in Limbo follows her as she is trapped in Gensokyo, scared and with no idea what to do as she is forced to fend off several of the playable characters and the urban legends they're playing around with. In the end she is confronted by Toyosatomimi no Miko, who helpfully reminds Sumireko that she can use the occult balls to escape Gensokyo temporarily. After Sumireko defeats her, she returns to the Outside World and gets a chance to catch her breath, but knows she will be pulled back to Gensokyo soon. Things however take a turn for the worst when she hatches a new plan: believing she will eventually be killed by the youkai of Gensokyo, she decides that when her time in the Outside World runs out, she will sacrifice herself to destroy the Great Hakurei Barrier, using herself as the catalyst to unleash the full power of the occult balls to do the deed.
Before being spirited away again however, she is at last confronted by Reimu, who had to ditch Mamizou's plan in lieu of a new threat: she learned that one of Sumireko's occult balls - specifically the Lunar Capital ball - had been swapped out for another, modified one without Sumireko knowing, and if fully activated would link the Capital with Gensokyo. Unfortunately Reimu drastically underestimated how desperate Sumireko was at this point, who believes she had been followed by another native of Gensokyo wanting her dead, and so decides to destroy the Great Hakurei Barrier immediately. She draws out the full power of the occult balls for the game's final battle, and while Reimu defeats her and saves the Great Hakurei Barrier, the Lunar Capital ball was still activated, setting the events of Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom in motion.
Sumireko, defeated for good, is detained by Reimu, Mamizou and Kasen Ibaraki. With the occult balls all used up, the three decided Sumireko was no longer a threat and returned her to the Outside World via the proper procedures, with Mamizou promising to keep an eye on her. A few days later however, Sumireko reappears at the Hakurei Shrine, but now as neither a "shadow" or as herself, but as some form of astral projection that Sumireko recently learned could travel to Gensokyo with while she slept. Understanding that Sumireko was no longer an enemy, Reimu returned the deck of Zener cards Mokou intended to to her. Sumireko went on to become a brief sensation in Gensokyo by way of being a reliable source of recent events in the Outside World... though this leads to real life issues since she now sleeps as much as possible...
Relationships
Fujiwara no Mokou
Initially annoyed, Mokou challenged Sumireko to a duel. The two found each other's strength admirable, and once Mokou's time Outside is over, they parted ways in a dramatic fashion. Later, Mokou met Sumireko again in Gensokyo, and guided her out of the Bamboo Forest, notably not as silently as the former usually would. It seems the two of them have become fast friends.
Renko Usami
Due to her name, similar appearance, and involvement in the creation of the Secret Sealing Club, she may have some kind of relation to Renko. However, the specifics of this connection is as yet unknown. Her profile suggests she is an ancestor of Renko, from the present time.

Additional Information
- The silhouette of Sumireko occupies the front of Urban Legend in Limbo's jewel case.
- Sumireko is the first final boss to be a human from outside Gensokyo since the PC-98 game Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream, who was Yumemi Okazaki. Sumireko also has similarities to Yumemi besides this; both have an interest in magic, they tried to take an inhabitant of Gensokyo, they have a cape and had traps provided to lurk them into their area.
- She is also the first final boss whose story mode scenario is not the last to be unlocked.
- The runes on her cape do not appear to form any meaningful words, and some are even drawn from different runic alphabets (e.g. the old-form "sowilo" rune as written in Elder Futhark and the "stan" rune used by Anglo-Saxon writers hundreds of years later).
- Inside the game data for Urban Legend in Limbo, a folder named "Hanako" can be found that contains three sprites of a silhouetted Sumireko holding her cell phone. It's possible that Hanako was a working name for her, or was intended to be her name.

Expose the Esoteric! The Secret Sealing Club's First President Sumireko Usami Species: High-school girl She was a genuine psychic. Thanks to the sense of omnipotence common to youths who furthered their knowledge via the internet, and to the talents she was born with, she began to think that "she was superior to other people," particularly around the time when she was in middle school. It wasn't to say that friends were useless or anything. Thus, unable to make any friends, (although she herself would frame it as "I didn't make any because I just didn't need any",) she lived a school life that others would view as tragic, but she herself was enriched by. It was around that time that she began research of her own. When she entered high school, her lifestyle instantly changed. However, she was convinced that she was of a different sort than the other humans around her. Other people, as far as she was concerned, may as well have been demons plotting to form regular relationships with her in order to drag her down to their level. In a smart move, she deliberately gathered people around her so as to drive them away. The Secret Sealing Club was a circle dedicated to exposing the secrets of other worlds with their own power. ---and so, various things occurred from there, There, she was made to realize that all her knowledge was only superficial. Experience is the real truth of this world, and her pursuit of factual knowledge was only something to cover for this. And in that dream, she at last met people who she couldn't look down on. .... .... .... ...however, there was one thing that remained incomprehensible in the end. Whose doing was this? Perhaps someone had been attempting to break the barrier from the inside. |
