Touhou" Series Overview & New Serialization Info

The Touhou series, a series of doujin shmups boasting high popularity between both shmup fans and this magazine's readers. This magazine has plans to bring you a new serialization using a world as its base -- "Touhou Kourindou." Its contents will consist of newly-written original stories akin to side stories. This issue's purpose is to announce and provide a preview of Touhou Kourindou by giving a brief explanation of the setting of the games (see other panel) and a simple introduction to the serialization itself.

To start, the story's setting will be Gensokyo, a world with an Eastern feel separated from the human world via a "barrier." Touhou Kourindou, rather than focusing on the games' beautiful danmaku and world, will instead be written to give you a peek into the daily lives of the characters. ZUN, the creator of the original Touhou games, is responsible for writing the stories. ZUN, the man responsible for the smooth, witty conversations in the games, and his quirky, eccentric lineup of characters could lead to any sort of story, so we hope that you look forward to them whether you're a fan of the games or not! In addition, Asai Genji will be assisting ZUN by providing illustrations. His drawings of the charming girls of Touhou and their fantasy motif, combined with a strongly-presented, atmospheric world makes for some exceptional illustration work. It's worth nothing just how alive the new world of Touhou presented in his art feels. And lastly, the three character bios below were created with ZUN's supervision to celebrate the serialization. They're bios for Hakurei Reimu and Kirisame Marisa, familiar characters from the games, as well as a new, third character. In the next issue, Touhou Kourindou will begin with a story centered around these three...!

Perfect Cherry Blossom Touhou Youyoumu ~ Perfect Cherry Blossom

Touhou is a series of danmaku shooting games created by the doujin circle Team Shanghai Alice. If you include the games developed in a DOS environment, the series currently has seven titles. Among them, 2002's "Touhou Koumakyou" and the new "Touhou Youyoumu" that was released to many players during this last Summer Comiket could be called representations of doujin shooting games as a whole.

As for what makes Touhou charming, its characters, sound, and setting all combine to make a world overflowing with personality, and it's done a splendid job at both capturing the beauty of danmaku and the fun of the shmup genre. It's also important to note that those merits are all propped up by a careful, single-man development team. By the way, if you're looking for info on how to obtain the Touhou games, please refer to Team Shanghai Alice's homepage.

The World of Touhou

Long ago, Gensokyo, the setting for the Touhou series, was a remote land feared for the youkai that would eat you if you strayed into it. In the additional text provided with "Touhou Youyoukyou[1]," "Gensokyo Record," this land where youkai live, distant from human habitation, has had a barrier erected by those humans who don't fear the dark, and now exists as its own isolated world.

"Gensokyo is a paradise for many youkai and a few humans." This paradise, sealed off with a barrier in our world's Meiji Era, is an odd civilized world. This is supposedly why Gensokyo is a little retro-feeling.

Keep your eyes peeled and wait for the publication where Gensokyo's strange tales will be told, "Touhou Kourindou ~ Curiosities of Lotus Asia.", in next month's issue!

  1. This section features a typo where the magazine mistakenly refers to "Touhou Youyoumu" as "Touhou Youyoukyou". It seems that the author took the last kanji of "Touhou Koumakyou" used it as the last kanji of "Youyoumu" by mistake.
