"Trickery" in this context is considered trickery of others starting by tricking one's self.
Hozuki (ほおずき) is a Japanese lantern plant. Physalis alkekengi. It is also used in comparison to balls of fire that are said to be the soul of the dead that remain on earth.

The elf that's referred to here is not the one with the pointy ears but the fairy. There's no meaning to this. Notes:
Yousei is what's written, but this word consists of the characters Strange (Yoh) and Fairy (Sei) thus ZUN's playing with breaking the words apart and putting them back together again.

The Theremin is an electrical instrument presented by the Russian inventor Leon Theremin. It senses the position of the performer's hand through electrostatic capacity and uses it to control its pitch and volume.
