Character Overview and Comments
Recruitment
  • 12F: Defeat Reisen, Eirin, and Kaguya in a battle
  • Reisen is required to complete the game.
Play Notes Looking rather underwhelming thanks to her low stats, slightly low level-up rate and extremely underwhelming spell card damage formulas, Reisen is still more capable than you might initially think. For starters, Grand Patriot's Elixir boosts up all of her stats and carries an incredibly small delay time for such a move, allowing her to quickly boost her stats to more respectable levels. At first, this will likely drain her SP and she'll need a break in the back, but once this stops being a problem, she can either blast all enemies with Lunatic Red Eyes (similar to Alice's Holland Doll, it 'supports itself' by lowering enemy MND) and end with a Mind Starmine for more damage, or for bosses or otherwise tough single enemies, debuff with Discarder. Although other characters are capable of decreasing enemy stats, Discarder is unique in that it affects every enemy stat - offense, defense, and speed - and foes with any sort of StatDrop vulnerability are nearly guaranteed to receive a debuff. Although it may not carry the strength to significantly debuff in one shot, multiple Discarder uses can replace several characters' worth of debuff effects, so in the right situation, you may find her very valuable indeed. Keep in mind that while all of her offensive spell cards have bad post-use delay, as Reisen gets faster and faster or if she spams Grand Patriot's Elixir, she will become an overall more impressive character capable of sitting out and surviving while debuffing or putting the hurt on enemies.

Character Overview and Comments
Recruitment
  • 12F: Defeat Reisen, Eirin, and Kaguya in a battle
  • Eirin is required to complete the game.
Play Notes Boasting high stat growths tempered by a slow leveling rate, Eirin's capabilities both are and aren't as impressive as they might look at first glance due to the nature of her spell cards. For starters, although she packs mostly offensive spell cards, only Astronomical Entombing actually deals the kind of high damage you might expect from Eirin's MAG stat, and it's expensive enough to be extremely restrictive in early stages of using her, but when you can use it the damage is usually staggering. Secondly, she is indeed surprisingly capable of surviving - her HP and defensive stats are impressive for a MAG-oriented character, and her affinities and resistances are very solid and well-rounded. Her durability is important if you choose to use her for her healing ability. Hourai Elixir is unusual not just because it has worse post-use delay than other single-target spell cards (Eirin's mediocre SPD doesn't help either), but also because it heals based on percentage. While it is also capable of healing a target above maximum HP, be aware that the extra HP will be lost the moment the character is affected by another attack, even a buff or heal, so don't rely on it. Although many characters will be better healed by others, this percentage-based healing makes her the most effective healer for characters with tremendous amounts of HP, especially Komachi. Regardless, while Eirin handles a little differently and more situationally than she might originally appear, don't underestimate her usefulness when put to her full potential, especially later in the game, when her SP is high and Astronomical Entombing and Hourai Elixir can be spammed consecutively.

Recruitment
  • 6F: Recruit Iku
  • 12F: Turn all switches to OFF, and return to 12F via the relay point. Head backwards
  • 10F: Go beyond all three OFF-barriers to find Tenshi
  • 1F - 10F: Find and defeat a Magic Butterfly on each floor
  • 10F: Return to and defeat Tenshi
Play Notes A pure wall who does just what a wall should do and nothing much more, Tenshi is a tank who knows how to do her job. Thanks to a combination of stellar DEF and MND growths and her powerful self-buff spell card State of Enlightenment, the only attacks that Tenshi really needs to fear being KO'd from are those that totally pierce defenses - which will take her down extremely fast due to the relatively low HP she sports for a tank; such attacks become more common as the game progresses. Every other damaging attack will usually just bounce harmlessly off of her, meaning that if you use her, you can generally expect to not have to worry about getting suddenly wiped out. However, be aware that Tenshi's capabilities come at a price - she'll likely need to spend her turns using Focus to recover the SP to use her buff again as it starts to run low, and her abysmal SPD keeps her from acting often (all of this on top of the significant debuffs and ailments she can give to herself with State of Enlightenment - be sure to equip items to raise her ailment resistances!), and her offensive spells boast very low damage output, especially with her mediocre ATK. When she's out, you're either going to be using her turns to switch out allies, or attempt to remove buffs off of bosses using her Sword of Rapture spell card. Although it's no guarantee to work, it is worth mentioning that many bosses use spells (mostly near their final or 'desperation' phases) which will instantly max out some buffs on them, and being able to remove them can be a lifesaver--just don't count on it always working. All in all, Tenshi is a solid wall that will help keep the flow of almost any team going smoothly - given that she's not stricken by the downsides of her self-buff or Focusing for SP - without sudden deaths or restrictions, just don't expect much damage output from her.

Character Overview and Comments
Recruitment
  • 14F: Enter floor 14
  • 12F: Return to where you fought Reisen, Eirin and Kaguya for an event with Mokou. Defeat her
Play Notes Pretty much a standard offensive mage, Mokou stands out as a 'safer to use' mage. She is more durable than most offensive sweepers and still fairly reliable for burning through random encounters, but thanks to the high enemy MND influence of many of her spells and her above-average MAG, she won't quite be outputting the damage you expect, nor does she carry any supportive effects you haven't seen elsewhere. Don't underestimate her because of this though; Her Fujiyama Volcano spell card can still output some very high damage at a bit of a cost, and that cost is offset by her excellent SP recovery, allowing her to recharge quickly between uses if Focusing or placed in reserve. She also carries WND and non-elemental spell cards as well, meaning she has more versatility for handling multiple enemy groups than single-elemental mages do, without the slow speed or weak defenses that normally come from being a mage. Her delays are as average as she is, if not a tad worse--Fujiyama Volcano has horrible delay as expected from most high-powered spells, but it is a valuable multi-target FIR spell card that can smash through enemies that don't resist it. Mokou won't go down as quickly as other mages, but her damage output falls a bit short outside of Fujiyama Volcano, especially with average post-use delay all around.

Character Overview and Comments
Recruitment
  • 11F: From 12F Relay Point with Green and Blue ON and Red OFF, reach and talk to Flandre
  • 12F: Find and talk to Flandre
  • 13F: Set the total to 120 and warp, talk to Flandre
  • 14F: Find and talk to Flandre
  • 15F: After accumulating 3000 Battle Points between Reimu, Marisa, Remilia, Sakuya, Patchouli, and Meiling, talk to and defeat Flandre
Play Notes Remilia's younger sister is a pure glass cannon boasting an ATK that dwarfs every other character's ATK in the same way that Komachi does with her HP. She also packs enough SPD to outpace many other characters and enemies. With these two outstanding qualities, Flandre tears through everything and anything in her way, but doesn't do so without some issues. First off, despite having surprisingly impressive HP, she's got horrible defenses and affinities, so she's in danger of being slaughtered by a wide variety of attacks, often in a single hit if the attack is not FIR-based. This is compounded by the significant drawbacks of her own spell cards. Starbow Break is an excellent way to tear off a large chunk of HP from any foe, boasting great power compared to other single-target spell cards such as Knockout in Three Steps thanks to Flandre's unparalleled ATK and its reasonable delay. However, Starbow Break also depletes a significant chunk of Flandre's HP with every use, weakening her valuable life force even more. Note also that Starbow Break causes her to burn through her already low TP even faster if she's using it for random encounters. Laveatein is easily one of the strongest attacks in the game, tearing through random encounters like a hot knife through butter, but it's incredibly risky - everyone but Flandre will lose their active gauge and Flandre herself will have her gauge at 20% after use, so you should only use it if you're absolutely sure it's going to kill enemies. Overall, when used correctly, Flandre can throw aside enemy groups and help a party smash through bosses with ease, but don't throw caution to the wind, because otherwise she or even your whole party could go down with a single mistimed switch-in or spell card.

Recruitment
  • 14F: Recruit Yuyuko, then locate 4 events with Orin, 1 at a time, with the last 3 events triggering a battle. After the last event, which is several battles ending on an Orin fight, she will join
Play Notes A speedster who might initially seem like a Chen clone (especially with Cat's Walk), Rin stands out for completely different reasons. For starters, although not reliably hardy, she is notably more capable of surviving attacks (particularly those that target MND) than most other speed-based characters. Her only low-delay attack, Cat's Walk, generally deals low damage, but it is incredibly useful for delaying Rin's turn momentarily so she can swap out a slower nuker about to unleash a powerful, long-delay spell card. Vengeful Cannibal Spirit can soften a target's DEF up (providing the same frightening DEF debuff that Iku does with her Thunder Drum Shot) for a slower nuker to come in and mop up, as well, and it generally makes for a decent single-target SPI-element spell card to have on hand. But Rin really shines when using her multi-target spell cards, partially because their large delays are significantly reduced by her excellent speed. Former Hell's Needle Hill deals very respectable and reliable damage even to high-DEF enemies, even moreso due to its non-elemental nature. For groups of enemies, Blazing Wheel deals remarkably high damage thanks to great multipliers and Rin's generally high ATK and surprisingly decent MAG growth rate. Having decent survivability due to good MND, she can even stay out long enough to assist against bosses too, and backed by someone buffing her attack power and defenses can be a very reliable, long-lasting offensive speedster.

Recruitment
  • 3F, 6F, 7F, 9F, 11F, 12F: Find a sake jar shard
  • 14F: Talk to Suika twice
Play Notes In many ways similar to her fellow Oni, Suika has high HP and ATK, and a very strong single-target nuke. She's a bit quicker than Yuugi (though still not particularly fast) and has a nice self-buff if you can avoid the side effect, but has high MND instead of DEF and levels slower. Throwing Atlas is an excellent boss-killer, especially if Suika's ATK is boosted. If you need it, Bean-Throwing Black Hole can take down an enemy group's SPD, but there are better choices for a speed debuffer. Relatively high base PAR ailment resistance makes her a decent recipient of Iku's Thundercloud Stickleback. She can also make use of Gathering and Dissipating in an emergency to aid a character who's suffering from ailments, but be aware that it removes positive buffs and that using it will be sidetracking Suika from her usual offensive job. Overall, Suika is a great party member, with high damage, fairly good durability, and even the ability to provide some support.

  • 14F: Find an event with Yuyuko and beat her, and she will join
Play Notes Strong, but for slightly different reasons than you might expect, Yuyuko brings some unique advantages to the table. For starters, she boasts the best overall ailment resistances (tied with Wriggle) to support her good affinities and generally impressive defensive stats, which helps make up for her abysmal SPD. Secondly, although her MAG isn't high enough for most of her arsenal to be all that strong, her spells carry useful secondary effects - the ability to reliably inflict instant KOs, and the unique ability to directly disrupt a target's active gauge. Although this effect is 1/4th of a random encounter's gauge, it is only 1/10th of a boss' gauge, so don't expect to be able to lock down a boss easily with this. Finally, although it will be expensive throughout much of the game, Saigyouji Flawless Nirvana packs an incredible damage formula that more than makes up for Yuyuko's above-average MAG stat, making it one of the best SPI-elemental group attacks in the game, the excellent instant death rate and low delay only raising its appeal even more. The only flaw to her ability to clear trash is a slow SPD growth and leveling rate, meaning you'll need to assist her with a quick character capable of slowing/paralyzing the enemy first - if you can provide this backup, Yuyuko is an excellent option for clearing trash, although not quite as good in boss fights.
