Shoot the Bullet

Touhou Kaeizuka(Flower Reflecting Mound) ~ Phantasmagoria of Flower View (東方花映塚 ~ Phantasmagoria of Flower View) is the ninth official game in the Touhou Project. It returns to the same two-player split-screen style of danmaku seen in Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream, and is the first Windows-era game to use this style of gameplay followed with Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost 18 years later. Phantasmagoria of Flower View was released in 2005, at Comiket 68, and was released digitally via Steam in 2022.

Gameplay

Phantasmagoria of Flower View is a split-screen vertical-scrolling danmaku shooting game where two characters must shoot and dodge bullet patterns while unleashing attacks and character-specific spell cards onto the other player. Similar gameplay is present in an earlier entry, Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream. When a player loses all of their hit points, they are defeated.

The game features a Story Mode which pits the player against a nine opponents, with each opponent becoming progressively more skilled. A Versus Mode is also included, consisting of a single match against either an AI or human opponent. The player can also choose to watch two AI opponents face off. Using a netplay patch enables multiplayer through LAN or over the Internet.

Concept

Phantasmagoria of Flower View was designed to be a sequel to Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream in terms of gameplay and, by extension, Twinkle Star Sprites. Twinkle Star Sprites' gameplay where two players simultaneously engage in shmup gameplay while sending attacks to their opponent was the main inspiration for Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream's gameplay.

Story

This game takes place in Gensokyo. Spring has arrived, but something is wrong. Flowers are blooming and the fairies are becoming active as usual, but the amount of flowers and fairies is unnatural; even non-spring flowers are blooming. Playing as one of 16 characters, the player must battle their way through 9 stages to reach Muenzuka and uncover the truth behind the abnormal spring.

Music

Phantasmagoria of Flower View features 19 separate music tracks. A number of character-specific themes are reused from previous games. Youmu Konpaku's theme, "Eastern Ghostly Dream ~ Ancient Temple", Reisen Udongein Inaba's theme, "Lunatic Eyes ~ Invisible Full Moon", and the Prismriver Sisters' theme, "Phantom Band ~ Phantom Ensemble" have new arranges for this game. In addition, Cirno's theme, "Tomboyish Girl in Love" and Mystia Lorelei's theme, "Deaf to All but the Song" have arranges under the titles "Adventure of the Lovestruck Tomboy" and "Deaf to All but the Song ~ Flower Mix" respectively.

"Wind God Girl", a song that was originally released in the Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red artbook, was included in this game in a shorter form; ZUN considered the original cut of the track to be too long for the game.

"Higan Retour ~ Riverside View" and "White Flag of Usa Shrine" were rearranged for the music CD Retrospective 53 minutes. "Higan Retour ~ Riverside View" has another arrange in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody.

An extended version of Eiki Shiki's theme, "Eastern Judgement in the Sixtieth Year ~ Fate of Sixty Years", was featured on the music CD released with Seasonal Dream Vision, and was also rearranged for the Neo-traditionalism of Japan music CD.
