Notes

  1. Reference to the Nine Syllable Cuts, the practice of making nine cuts--five horizontal and four vertical, alternating--in the air with the finger. The Nine Syllables are Rin (), Pyō (), Tō (), Sha (), Kai (), Jin (), Retsu (), Zai (), Zen ().
  2. Miracle fruit: a west African plant that produces berries that, when chewed before a meal, cause bitter and sour foods to taste sweet.
  3. Id: the unconscious, inaccessible, mostly base and instinctual part of the psyche in Freud's structural model.
  4. Super-ego: the organized, mostly (but not entirely) subconscious part of the psyche that includes ideals and spiritual goals in Freud's structural model.
  5. Polygraph: a device that monitors several physiological reactions in a subject, such as heart rate, motion, and perspiration. Colloquially known as the "lie detector", though extensive research has suggested that it is not reliable and easily fooled.
  6. Rorschach ink blot test: Developed by Hermann Rorschach, a controversial psychological evaluation based on subjects' interpretations of ink blots on paper.
