Main article: Touhou Pocket Wars/Gameplay

Gameplay in Touhou Pocket War Evolution remains the same to its predecessor, however, some additions in the mechanics itself have been added.

The Room

The room is the place where most of the time will be spend.

Set Spellcards

You can upgrade, arrange and spend Assist points you earned in Dream Events here. The stat gains from upgrading cards are semi-random. Cards can be upgraded until Level 10. At that point, the only way to improve your cards is the lightbulb events that occur randomly during battle. Lightbulbs will slowly increase the used card's stats up to the maximum values, one point at a time.

Each card has a maximum set of values that cannot be exceeded. Each of the three damages will increase by 2-5% of the current value each level. Special effect chance/power, SP cost, HIT bonus, and CRI chance each have two hidden stats that determine the maximum values. Each has a "base" gain and a "random" gain. Upon each level the appropriate stat is increased by the base gain plus a random number between 0 and the random gain.

The maximum damage increase results from a 5% gain each level, and is approximately 150% of the original value. The maximum gain for each of the other stats is 9 times the sum of the base gain and the random gain. A level 10 card will eventually reach these maximum values from the lightbulbs, so it is not necessary to repeatedly re-roll spellcard level ups to try to get maximum bonuses. The sole exception is avoiding SP cost gains from random level ups; lightbulbs will decrease the SP cost of a spellcard that has negative SP gain but not decrease the cost of a spellcard that increases the SP cost. A spellcard with a base SP cost gain of 0 and rand SP cost gain of 1 will increase the cost by about 5 SP points, however with frequent re-rolling the cost gain can be completely avoided.

Union Spellcards

Immensely powerful spellcards that can be obtained in a lvl 4 spellpack (costs 5,000 and is rare) which can be unlocked by buying over 500 Spellcards. To use, one must have the required characters out in the active slots (close, mid, far) and have the required SP for all characters involved. Only one character has to have the card in order to use it.

Set Characters

You earn ♥ in battles which can be spent on HP, ATK, HIT and DOD. Some girls have an easier time leveling in an area than others, signifying their strength, while some need massive points to level up in a area, signifying their weakness. Each time you select a stat to upgrade it goes up randomly in a certain range, and you gain a level. For HP the range is 8-16, for the other stats it's 1-3. A girl can only reach level 500 without reforming, which is explained further down. You can also equip items that raise not only these stats, but also SP, REC and SPD. There are also avatars, which have no effect in battle so pick freely.

Reform

When depleting a character's affection to 0, one can reform to make a character stronger. You will face a LV 500 girl with a lot of HP, so it's recommended to be maxed out as well. When you win, you can reform your Character and play a board game in which a stat can be increased.

  • HP UP.png Increases Hp by 3%
  • SP UP.png Increases SP by 2%
  • REC UP.png Increases REC by 1%
  • ATK UP.png Increases ATK by 3%
  • HIT UP.png Increases HIT by 3%
  • DOD UP.png Increases DOD by 3%
  • SPD UP.png Increases SPD by 1%
  • ! UP.png Increases a random stat by 1 or 2%
  • ALL UP.png Increases all upgradeable stats (HP,ATK,HIT,DOD) by 2%

There are 10 rolls, and by going around the board once, two extra rolls will be obtained. One must note that when you reform, you revert to lvl 1 and must lvl back up to 500 to use another reform, which you get by fighting the same character, albeit with higher stats.

Save/Load

At this place the game can be either saved or loaded, but here you can also look at records which is useful to see which ones you need to use more often and which ones you beat in a encounter. You also get the ACE System which gives your girls a small boost in the stat that you have chosen. You get points by completing certain events, found in Touhou Pocket Wars EVO/Miscellaneous.

Sleep

After fighting to the death and working yourself to the bone, you can go to sleep where you can do a Dream Event. Your first three girls (starting from upper left of page 1) will grant you your 3 Dream Events, so arrange accordingly. If you win a Dream Event, you earn Assist Points which you can spend in Set Spellcards, but you can also gain avatars and items, depending on the event.

Leave Room

Leaving the room.

Outside World

When you leave the comfort of your own room, you see that you can buy and battle girls, work at you job, and after fulfilling certain conditions, travel to Gensokyo via the Gap, or if this is too much for you, retreat to the confines of your room.

Battling in the Game Center, doing Events/Encounters/Mazes/Reforms/King Games in Gensokyo and working all uses up part of your day.

You have 4/4 of a day, which consist of morning, noon, night, and Midnight. At midnight, you are no longer able to leave your room, so plan accordingly for shopping, tournaments, etc.

Working uses up 1/4 of your day

Home

After getting some girls, spellcard packs, equips, costumes and ♥, this is where you bring it all together and assemble your team.

Gap/Gensokyo

After you hit D rank and have the event with Ran and Chen occur, you will be able to travel outside the human world. There are four different actions, Meet, Event, Maze and Encounter.

Meet

Your waif can be met here. You can try out reform battles, play King's game and use gifts in the hopes of winning them over. Affection points allow you to dress up your girls, provided you unlocked these via Quiz and Dream Battles.

Reform Battle

You are attempting to take on a level 500 Girl with powerful spellcards and in her home territory (what is meant by that is she'll be placed where she'll fight the best).

Doing a Reform Battle uses 1/4 of your day.

King's Game

You must beat her in battle 3 times starting at levels 300, 400 and 500 in order for her to take off pieces of her outfit until she can't take it no more.

You need a minimum of 12 girls with the appropriate levels and spellcards to attempt this.

Doing a King's Game uses 1/4 of your day.

Gifts

Gifts are used to increase affection points which are used to unlock costumes the girls may have. To get gifts, you must win encounters and mazes. For what each girl likes, please see each girl's individual profile.

Events

These are key plots in the story.

Maze

The first time you visit a maze, it would be to advance in the storyline. In a maze, you will randomly get attacked by monsters and the frequency seems to be random which is annoying because each of your girls can only be used once. After you have completed the maze, you can choose to return to them for whatever reason (mainly to get free ♥ w/o paying or getting gifts). In specific spots of a maze, you can find items such as equipments just by landing on the square. Battles can win you spheres, gifts, or UFOs in later dungeons of EVO+.

Doing a Maze uses 1/4 of your day

Encounter

Somebody doesn't like the idea of you getting close to their girl, so you must fight them to assert your dominance. Winning gives you the ability to take their points down to 0, which then you unlock the option to do a reform battle. The amount of rival's affection points that could be reduced can be manipulated by winning quiz battles (max: w/o 200, with 400)

Doing an Encounter uses up 1/4 of your day

Combat

You can have 3 active members and one assisting that sits on the sidelines.

When you win, not only you gain ♥, but you can win prizes as well.

Battle

To prepare for combat, first a team of 4 girls should be picked. The 1st member of the party determines what theme song will play, and the fourth determines who the assist character will be.

After picking, the girls should be placed accordingly to gain an advantage on the opponent. The 3 places which can be used are close, mid and far, and 3 girls can't be on the same grid.

UFOs

There are two ways the UFOs affect combat in EVO+. The first is by being on the field. A UFO in the field gives an effect to the character it is next to.

Red UFO: Takes 20% more damage
Green UFO: 20% Max HP heal at end of turn
Blue UFO: 30 SP recovery at end of turn

The second way is through the gauges in the lower corners of the screen. The gauges affect the entire team, and the fuller they are, the higher the bonuses. If someone with a UFO is hit, their UFO disappears and is deposited in the attackers' UFO gauge. To catch a green or blue UFO that is near one of your team members, they must avoid being hit by any attacks for that turn. Catching a red UFO requires using a support spell on that character.

Red UFO gauge: Damage dealt increases 1-10%
Green UFO gauge: Evasion increases 1-10%
Blue UFO gauge: Damage taken decreases 1-10%
All UFO gauges: Accuracy increases 1-10%

Winning

After winning, you may pick one card out of 6 and win the following...

Money.png (Game Center only) Yup, you win some money for you to spend on cards, gacha or case expansions.
Equip-up.png (Game Center only) You get a free item that you can use to customize your girls' stats.

Assist Ability

An Assist Ability refers to the ability used by the fourth character in a gacha battle. Each character have different (but not unique) assist ability, and they can be switched out for a different character in battle up to three times.

In order to level up assist abilities, you need to get "assist points" either by completing dream events or leveling up spell cards. The amount of points needed to level up their respective assist ability differs for every character.

Environment Spheres

A new addition to the Pocket War EVO battle mechanic, Environment or ENV Spheres act much akin to Scarlet Weather Rhapsody's weather system. However unlike SWR, you can select which ENV Sphere to be used in battle for your advantage. ENV Spheres are cycled randomly in a battle, but you can set up to three ENV Spheres with the Item command during a battle, provided that the slot is empty.

Listed below are the ENV Spheres that is used in the game.

Sphere1.png Fog - Halves all hit rate.
Sphere2.png Bright - Spellcards will not use up MP (You still require the amount to use them).
Sphere3.png Repeat - Spellcards used during this round will not require a reset before they can be used again.
