General Information

Name

Her full name is Yoshika Miyako (宮古 芳香). The Miyako (宮古) in her name means "ancient palace", while Yoshika (芳香) means "fragrance", "perfume" if read together. The Yoshi () can also mean "fragrance", "beautiful", "virtuous" when standing alone, and ka () "incense", which might be referring to either Yoshika being a jiang shi, or her guarding a graveyard.

Her name comes from Miyako no Yoshika (都良香), a ninth century Japanese scholar and poet. Legends say that 100 years after he left office, he was spotted on a mountain as a hermit, his face unchanged.

Appearance

In Ten Desires's official art, Yoshika has pale skin, greyish blue hair and eyes. She wears a blue hat with a yellow star and an ofuda on the forehead. Her shirt is red chinese-like, with pink trim on the wide sleeves. Her skirt is black skirt with the same trim wrapped around the skirt like ribbon. She keeps her arms ahead, like a zombie.

ZUN stated in an interview that her original design was too similar to Lei-lei(Hsien-ko) from Darkstalkers. Considering it too cliche, he instead made Yoshika a zombie whose brain was rotting away and was thus stupid.

Story

Ten Desires

When the heroine reaches the graveyard adjacent to the Myouren Temple, Yoshika meets her there. Having been revived to protect the Mausoleum from intruders, a fact which takes her a little while to remember, she does battle with the heroine and loses. Later, in stage 4, she is revived again and returns to team up with her master Seiga, but the two are defeated.

Additional Information

Trivia

  • She has a star on her hat that is similar to Hong Meiling's, but without a symbol.
  • The relationship between Yoshika and Seiga probably is caused from the fact that the inspirations of both of them appears in Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio. There is a story "dead body incident" (simplified Chinese: 尸变; traditional Chinese: 屍變), the 3rd chapter of the 1st volume.
  • According to legends, Ibaraki-douji, model of Kasen Ibaraki, was deeply impressed after reading Miyako no Yoshika's works. Moreover, Kasen is seen reciting one of his poems in the first chapter of Wild and Horned Hermit.

Fanon

  • A Touhou character whose "joints pretty much never move" is a historically unprecedented character specification, and is therefore an extraordinary bottleneck for illustration. Since it has not come to light exactly what parts can move to what extent, individual interpretation is necessary.
  • Also, from the start her head is weak, but for her decay to continue even further than in the original that it becomes difficult to understand each other is also something often seen. She is also sometimes depicted with blue skin. With the strong color of horror, there are also depictions of a body part being ripped off or head cut off, but she is a valuable character who, even treated as such, would not get angry at other characters.
  • For pairings (see Relationshipping), it is most commonly with Seiga Kaku. In a group, she is most commonly associated one of the five in the Ten Desires group. With Seiga allied with Toyosatomimi no Miko, Mononobe no Futo, and Soga no Tojiko, she commonly takes the form of clinging to Seiga.
  • Some Western fans have noticed that Yoshika's hands moving as if she was driving an invisible car. Combined with her cap, this has led to memes of her as a cab driver.
  • Yoshika's ability to eat anything puts her higher than Yuyuko in fandom. In some fanart, Yoshika is even trying to eat Yuyuko.
  • Because Yoshika is a guard, she has sometimes been compared to Meiling because she is also a guard. She's also a Chinese girl...
  • Since her ability is "eating anything", she has sometimes been compared to Rumia and Yuyuko Saigyouji, with the latter being an infamous omnivore in fanon.
  • Many fans draw the characters on the seal as "勅令 随身保命" (Emperor Rescript: Comply & Live), the format used in a film series Mr. Vampire, which is one of the most famous Jiang Shi movies.
