何にも不思議なことはないような^^;

(Greetings omitted)

Okay, now to answer your questions. However, please note that there are some points I can't answer.
I've been planning from the start to use several of them in the stories for the next game and beyond,
or as background info which will be revealed in subsequent games, so I'll be purposefully vague on those points.

Also, since I've been engaging in Touhou for quite some time, there are a number of things I don't remember:
parts missing from my mind as common knowledge, official background material already announced elsewhere,
secret background info conveyed only to friends, or background info completed from the beginning only in my
head. So just to be safe, I'll be vague on these points too. (I'm not answering the questions, am I. :-) )

Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't have written a little more in detail about Imperishable Night. (sweat)

> • Is Reimu the 13th Hakurei Shrine Maiden?
> The manual's back story mentions the 13th Shrine Maiden.
> So this would have to be Reimu, wouldn't it?

It's been a long while, so speaking from the conclusion, probably not.
The message behind the Gensokyo Record is as follows:

The Gensokyo Record is fairly suspect. It's not like they let anyone hear it, and no one has any idea when or
where someone's looking. That's a transcript among the people living in Gensokyo. It was not necessarily read
at the same time as the story took place. In a sense, the content is common knowledge of Gensokyo recognized
by the humans. However, there is a continuation of the Gensokyo Record that was abridged out of the
manual, and a variety of events are recorded in it. It's not just stories about Reimu and company written
there, though. It describes a variety of events that have occurred in Gensokyo.

The problem is, no one knows whether the original of this transcript exists, or even if it does, no one knows
where. All sorts of people have copied it and even added new anecdotes without permission. (You can see from
how the additional material is written that it was added on by someone quite recently.) In short, the copiers'
intentions have interfered. Naturally, since the transcript is in regard to the entire contents, not just for
the guide portion, additions and deletions stemming from typos, omissions, or arbitrary interpretations have
rapidly changed the content. There is simply no way one can say such a book is capable of conveying the truth.

In short, being able to look at this and imagine (or expect, in this case) that it was embellished by the
shrine maiden's hand is the same as thinking, "There is no way I can trust the contents of this record."

I've kind of gotten away from the topic of the question, but for the above reasons, as you might expect, there
is a high possibility that Reimu is not the 13th Hakurei shrine maiden.

It's because there are simply too many additions, as there were a lot of people who made additions that were
then copied over by the people who came afterward.

Also, what I thought people wanted to know from this admittedly unclear Gensokyo Record was "Only those who
live (exist) for a long time know the true appearance of Gensokyo." There are no longer any humans who are
that well informed.

> • Can Lily not talk? Looking at the character background text for PCB, it seems Lily was trying to announce
spring, but...
> She did so using danmaku.
> So does this really mean Lily used that method because she can't speak?
> Or was danmaku simply a way of expressing herself?

It's not like that at all. There are situations in which even humans use something like body language rather
than words—not just when words won't get through, but when they're excited (or when the other party is
excited), when it's difficult to hear sounds, when they're far away, or when they want to call attention to an
emergency.

One fires warning shots just overhead when dealing with mobs.
This is similar to that sort of behavior.

> • Can the hairballs and small-fry fairies talk?
> Building a little on the above question, can lower-level fairies and spirits speak?

Spirits have almost no personalities. They are Nature itself and almost never speak. However, there are those
that talk (or appear to do so). For instance, the echoes or fairies that answer you when you face a mountain
and yell have a little more mental (high-level) existence, bumping up the number of beings who can talk.

> • Is the language the girls use Japanese?
> I feel a little unsophisticated asking this, but... (sweat)

Gensokyo IS Japan. :-)
However, note that even if they use obscure or archaic words, so long as there is no precise intent, they
basically express themselves in Japanese in the games.

> • About how tall is everyone?
> Even a rough idea, like order of height, would be fine.
> I personally wonder about how small the young girls, Cirno, Rumia and the fairies are.
> About 120–130 cm?

I might officially announce an order of height if there's a demand (since I set up a height comparison chart in
the production materials).

However, backing up a bit...generally speaking, they're about as tall as girls in their early teens ['10代前半' means 10 to 14 years old]. A
suitable breakdown would be something like:
Tall: Sakuya, Meiling, Yukari
Fairly Tall: Reimu, Yuyuko, Alice, Letty, Ran
Fairly Short: Marisa, Youmu, Patchouli, Lunasa, Merlin
Short: Remilia, Lyrica, Chen, Cirno, Rumia, Flandre
Basically, if we consider the top level as the height of a human in her late teens or older ['10代後半以降' means 15 years old or above] and the bottom
level as the height of a human in her early teens ['10代前半' ], that puts them in a fairly short class (though none of that
level are human). If their sizes appear to be different on the game screen than given above, it's because of
some mystic force like perspective, so pay it no mind. :-)

> • Are Yuki and Mai really dead?
> I know we're dealing with a PC-98 game, but were Yuki and Mai from Mystic Square really killed?
> Looking in particular in the conversation when Lady Mima and Yuki are left... (sweat)
> Or is this also a type of joke, like Lady Remilia's statement that "Sakuya is dead" in EoSD?

Basically, they're whatever-works types, so they might not be dead. I generally have no comment regarding
the PC-98 games. Please ignore them just as one can ignore derivative works. :-)

Then again, Sakuya is human, but those two aren't. Even if their physical damage is rather painful, they can
recover completely in a few days, or in 2–3 weeks if it's really serious. Conversely, it's possible they could
not recover so simply or might even truly die from a spiritual attack (one that has a spiritual meaning).

> • I don't know how to read some of the spellings. (sweat)

Tentatively, I read them in my head as follows:
彩雨= Saiu
式輝= Shiki
飯綱= Iidzuna
罔両= Mouryou
Kasouyumekazura

However, the meaning is in the shape of the kanji, so it's no big deal if you read them wrong.

> • The purpose of four words written on Sakuya's bomb
> Some website noticed as below:
>> Recapitulation
>> musical term: chorus parts in a sonata
>>	parts where the theme in the beginning appears again in a sonata (or ternery) form
>> Recessional
>> music played when a bride and groom leave
>>	Fredric William Brown's writing, "Recessional"
>> The rhyme that Joseph Rudyard Kipling wrote for celebration of the golden wedding of Queen Victoria,
	"Recessional"
>> Rattenuto
>> musical term: restrained, gradually going slower
>> Religioso
>> musical term: pious, religious
> Is there some purpose on that Sakuya has such a bomb with these words?
> Additionally, though it overlaps to some content, I wonder whether bars seen on the bomb effect mean that
Sakuya has been captured by her own power... or she denies any other, or something like these.

How well you see. (laugh)
As you mentioned, they consist of musical terms.
Rather than the meanings of these words, the fact that they have been written is important.
Though this is just a frippery play on words. (laugh)
The cage-like image expresses the parts that she keeps private.
However, as mentioned below, I will still keep some matters about Sakuya secret.

> • Details on Layla Prismriver
> So it kinda bugged me after reading the character texts... (sweat)
> Does Layla play some instrument like the rest of the sisters?
> Or maybe the other sisters perform the music, and she takes on the vocals?
> Also, if she's got some image color, I'd like to know.
> (Lunasa is black, Merlin is white, and Lyrica is red. Something like that.)

First off, the three Prismriver Sisters are Lunasa, Merlin, and Lyrica. They're the only ones known
as the Prismriver Sisters. I even wrote down a bunch of stuff about how they came to be in the texts for
Perfect Cherry Blossom, I'm pretty sure.

The most important point is that, while the game treats both Poltergeists and Ghosts like they're the same,
Ghosts are actually different than Poltergeists. (I think I wrote something like this down somewhere, but I
can't seem to find exactly where... ^^;)

So... the three Sisters that show up in the game are entirely different beings than the original, four,
human Prismriver Sisters. (And from Perfect Cherry Blossom, they run around from the Netherworld, where they
live, to the Living World. At least, I wanted people to picked up that implication, so that's how I wrote it.)

Putting all that aside, Layla was a lonely little girl.
She lived in her merchant family's wealthy home, along with the three Sisters.

At the time, the four girls lived without ever knowing anything about the outside world. Of course, they
probably really liked their violins and pianos and everything else instrumental, but they weren't a performing
troupe (and they definitely weren't anything like what they are now). They didn't dress up all weird like they
do now. (They did that after they got to Gensokyo.)

There was some accident (the cause of which was the Count of the mansion getting some special item from an
eastern country. You could probably guess, but this was a magic item from Gensokyo, and related to the origin
of Layla's powers) which happened and caused the collapse of Prismriver Mansion.

After the collapse, what sort of lifestyle Layla and her three sisters had is entirely unknown. Not only is it
not related at all to Gensokyo and quite a bit of time passed, so no one really knows about it.

So, who are the three Sisters who appeared in the game? They're what Layla, Layla's power (and the item) gave
birth to: Poltergeists (beings like raw, spiritual energy).

Those poltergeists from the beginning were nothing more than imitations of how her Sisters looked like and
sounded like. After a while, they became able to converse with Layla, and after longer, they started living
together like regular Sisters. It was hard for Layla to live in Gensokyo, but the illusionary Sisters were able
to help with that and give her some sort of normal life. The three Sisters didn't ever age or grow old, so as
you'd expect, they Layla lived out her life and eventually passed on.

But the weird thing about all this was, even after's Layla's passing, the three Sisters never disappeared for
some reason. Just like poltergeists, they wanted to keep causing a ruckus (and they thought of a lot of ways),
and when they got a hold of some instruments and performed, they eventually became performers quite naturally.

After this, for whatever reason, while they were on their way to the Netherworld, the Prismrivers started to
become known around Ghosts and other spirits. Or, around Ghosts who just wanted to spend every day having fun.
They're normally in the Netherworld, but can pass between it and the Living World as they want.

And everyone was happy.

... Er, why'd we go off to the Netherworld to begin with? (Lyrica asked.)

> ・Sakuya's Origins
> Looking at the description from Embodiment of Scarlet Devil,
> > She's already given up on befriending other humans.
> is written. Are these humans she's given up befriending from the human world (outside Gensokyo)?
> Or, do even the humans in Gensokyo that walk around with youkai consider her
> time manipulation abilities to be taboo?

I blurred the finer details of Sakuya and Remilia's settings because I had planned to publicize
those somewhere eventually, but that occasion never arose (laugh)

What I will say is, Sakuya isn't from Gensokyo.
Sakuya Izayoi is a name given to her by Remilia, and her real name is different.

Anything else, I plan to reveal later, so for now, I'll keep my secrets. (laugh)

> ・Why does that arrogant Reimu call him Rinnosuke-san, with the honorific?
> This is a question from a friend, just to be clear. (sweat)

Well, that's not strange at all. ^^;
Precisely because her personality is like that, she uses Rinnosuke-san.
Wouldn't regular girls call him Morichika-san or Kourindou-san?
Basically, you're not friends with someone until you can use their given name.

For other youkai, those who call each other with "Hey, you." even if they just met
are probably fellow girls who live in tight spaces. Surely.

Well, I seemed to have gone over a lot of details, is what I've got right now alright?

Everything up there is a sampling of what's going on behind Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and
Perfect Cherry Blossom.
Touhou always setting up the details for the sake of setting up details, but leaves some
important keyword out.
Even if I shape up things that aren't related to the games at times...

Actually, this is the greatest jest I've set up.

If you realize this, then it would be pretty funny (for me) (laugh)

Well, I guess I'll be going.

This is it.
