takes place somewhere between Ten Desires and Double Dealing Character, and is another collaboration with Twilight Frontier.

Gameplay
Hopeless Masquerade is a one-on-one aerial fighter with no ground combat. Characters fight one another by using standard attacks (melee and special attacks), skills, and spell cards. Each character features a unique fighting style. Spell cards, skill cards, and items are "declared" by inputting a particular button combination. Certain skills will behave differently depending on what direction you map it to - for example, Ichirin Kumoi's laser attack will angle upwards or downwards if the skill is set to an up slot or a down slot, respectively. Each skill, spell, and item adds a single "point" to one of the three faiths, Shinto (ja), Taoism (ja) or Buddhism (ja). If one's faith gathers a total of 4 "points", the character's bullets will behave differently:
*Shinto specializes in shooting range. It features more bullets with better homing and attack area, but the bullets can be easily destroyed by other bullets or grazing.
*Taoism specializes in shooting speed. Its bullets are faster, have better penetration, and are harder to be grazed, but they are smaller and have less spread.
*Buddhism specializes in close combat. Its bullets are larger, and stun opponents for longer, but have worse range.

The game also introduces the "popularity system". Each character in combat has a popularity meter shown in the corner of the screen, with a percentage underneath the health bars. While fighting, certain attacks and spells will raise the attacker's popularity, while being hit may decrease it. One may initiate a Last Word by getting up to 100% popularity and inputting a specific button combination. In addition, each character has a stun meter similar to the one seen in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and Touhou Hisoutensoku. Each character has a different amount, and it allows them to use stronger skills and spell cards. Each character also has an extra, unique mechanic, represented by an icon next to their stun meter, which gives the character certain advantages.

Concept
The game features a different style of two-dimensional sprites compared to earlier versus fighting games within the series. It is also the first game in the official series to have a native resolution of 1280×720. According to Twilight Frontier, the entire game is being built from scratch rather than reusing the engines from the previous fighting games. The character's portraits were done by alphes. As is popular for fighting games in recent years, stages use fully 3 dimensional backgrounds. As of the web trial release, the game also includes netplay.

The English title of the game refers to the in-game plot in which the humans of Gensokyo have descended into a state of hopelessness, while the "masquerade" refers to the final boss of the game, Hata no Kokoro, being a youkai of masks. Her given name "Kokoro" also refers to the Japanese part of the title, which includes the kanji 心, meaning heart.

Story
Setting
The game's prologue says the Human Village is the main focus of the game, and is included as a selectable stage. Besides that, several other locations are playable as a stage. These include the Hakurei Shrine and the Palanquin Ship. On a particular unusual note, both the ship and Myouren Temple are both selectable despite one becoming the other after Undefined Fantastic Object.

Characters
The game features the following returning playable characters: Marisa Kirisame, Reimu Hakurei, Ichirin Kumoi, Byakuren Hijiri, Mononobe no Futo, Toyosatomimi no Miko, Nitori Kawashiro, Koishi Komeiji, and Mamizou Futatsuiwa. Hata no Kokoro is a new character and the final boss of the game. Besides that, many other characters from previous works are featured as background characters.

Plot
In the wake of so many incidents beyond their control, the Human Village has fallen into a state of hopeless pessimism. Believing that religion can restore order, some of Gensokyo's most prominent adherents of Buddhism, Taoism and Shinto all want to take this chance to expand their particular faith's influence.

Music
The game holds a total of nineteen tracks, mainly consisting of character's themes. Most themes of the returning characters are arranged by U2 Akiyama. ZUN made two tracks for the game, one is "Futatsuiwa from Gensokyo", being an arrangement of "Futatsuiwa from Sado" from Ten Desires and the other being Hata no Kokoro's theme "The Lost Emotion". The song that plays during the intro is based off of Theme of Eastern Story, and is also heard in the post-battle theme. Some tracks holds live-recored pieces. JUN took care of the violin, niimu did the guitar, on the flute tmy and on the cello ryo.

Press
On October 5, 2012, the main page of the game was released to public by Twilight Frontier. It includes the main logo, a short introduction to the story, and development screenshots of Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame. Later on, ZUN tweeted about the project on his Twitter. He also mentioned in the October 10th, 2012 episode of Nikenme Radio that Twilight Frontier will release the game at Comiket 83. No further details were added, though. A month later, on November 3, 2012, a trailer depicting a match between Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame was released onto YouTube. The description mentions that the Comiket 83 release would be a demo. Twilight Frontier announced on its blog on December 19th, 2012, that the C83 release has gone gold. A second gameplay video was put on YouTube on December 20th, 2012. It featured an intro with illustrated battles featuring a few characters, and another fight between Reimu and Marisa with various characters as audience.

A free trial was released on the Internet on April 12, 2013, which re-balanced the three existing characters, added a third stage, and introduced the netplay feature. A revision to this trial was released on May 3, 2013, which was mostly for fixing bugs and updating it to the same engine as the final version.

From May 17, until May 21, one playable character was revealed on the official site each day. As for patch 1.20 Hata no Kokoro is a fully playable character, and also added several new music to the game. In patch 1.30 new Spell cards and Skills cards were added to every character with the exception of Hata no Kokoro; new win poses as well as guard poses while recharging energy.
known as HM in the English speaking community, is the 13.5th official game of the Touhou series, made in collaboration with Twilight Frontier.

It features more bullets with better homing, but the bullets can be easily destroyed by other bullets or grazing.
*Taoism specializes in shooting speed. Its bullets are faster, have better penetration, and are harder to be grazed, but they have the worst homing.
*Buddhism specializes in close combat. Its bullets are larger but have worse range. A "high speed attack" (arrow key + strong attack) can be comboed.

The character's portraits are done by alphes.

Now, while we've got the attention of a multilingual native Japanese speaker, may I perhaps direct your attention to a trivial translation question I had? If you happen to have the spare moment, I'm kinda curious about both the exact meaning and the etymology of "丑三つ時". -Winane 02:06, 19 March 2008 (PDT)
: Thanks, it's my pleasure! I've gotten a gut to read you! Maybe you're non-japanese. So, if you're Japanese I'm sorry, but I'm happy because there are many Touhou fans! This pleases me a lot!
: I made a scription about "丑三つ時". But 爆龍 had written about it before I wrote. My writing may be too long, uneasy to read, & no work, perhaps (´д`).

: But... "multilingual"... I don't have a confidence to be given such a word (^^; ). My English level isn't quite enough... To say honest, I'm happy, but I think your words would be too big or too nice for me! --Masuo64 10:09, 19 March 2008 (PDT)

Hi, Ren here. Sorry for poking my nose into your page, but in your last reply, you looked offended, so I must apologize and explain what I meant. Your English doesn't have anything to do with my friendly attitude - we slavics are just like that (and I like Japanese people, too). Besides, you're the FIRST JAPANESE PERSON I've ever talked to, so seeing you write in English was a bit of a shocker. As far as I know, it's difficult fo a Japanese man to learn English - the languages differ greatly. I'm a student, too - studying at a liguistics faculty in our city's university. So, please, don't take my words as an insult. And, to be perfectly honest, I'd like to become friends with you. I'm studying Japanese now, and I'd like to go to Japan in future, to live there.
And, if you're playing SWR, would you consider having a match or two with me sometimes? It's getting boring playing with three people constantly... ^_^'

:Hi! Sorry for me being late to reply. It's no need to apologise. I'm not offended. But it's certain that my English level isn't not high. I must face to the reality, and on the same time your slavic friendliness makes me happy. I hope you become a bridge to cross Nippon & Ukrajinu. Your request to play SWR with me, I would like to. But I've not still made Tenko's wish come true in easy mode. And my internet environment is cable connection. Perhaps we couldn't play well. I will beat Tenko-chan in normal mode & get better environment, so let's play with us after it! --Masuo64 09:29, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Whew! Man, you've scared me a bit... I was about beginning to think you just laughed and decided to ignore me. Thanks that you didn't! I'm releived.
Well, about being a bridge between Ukraine and Nihon - I'd really love to! We've got this Noryoku Shiken exam taking place in Kyev (our capital) once every year. Azami-sensei says that those who pass all 4 levels go studying for free in Japan for 1 year. My current goal is to pass that exam, so I'm concentrated on learning the language. And let me make a HUUUUUUGE compliment to you japanese people - I've never heard a language more beautiful. I usually compare it to water - it's mild, fluent and strong at the same time. And water's my favorite drink, substance and elemental - only one conclusion there is to make, right? ^_^'
Concerning SWR - I didn't quite get your point, the only thing that I understood is that for some reasons you can't play now. That's okay, I understand. When you'll be willing to play, or just to chat a bit (I, personally, got a TON of questions I'd like to ask you about your country, your people, your traditions - everything), write a small note to me here, or in my user talk, and I'll give you my ICQ number, so we can coordinate our actions in real-time.
ひょいと監修します・・・
I double-checked "hyoi to" at Jim Breen's WWWJDIC (which I'll admit is assembled by individuals just like a wiki, but has proven a good resource so far), and it defines as ひょいと "by chance; suddenly; accidentally; with agility". I guess their entry needs changing...?--Apcog 01:18, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
:Hmm, I think "hyoi to" or "hyoi tto" represents "having an easy step with light feeling". Showing the index of WWWJDIC, "鳥は首をひょいと水に浸した。" is translated as "The bird dipped its head into the water". From my sense of Japanese language, "hyoi to" in this example indicates "doing quick or easy, light something" or "what the bird did was quick, it felt the action was hard to do, and owing to the easiness, it had no particular will to do so." By the way, I found the example of translating it as "light" in the 3rd meaning. Look at [this page. This engine has adopted Kenkyuusha's library, which is a little old but long-seller, useful for study in University, I think. This is my own opinion, "hyoi to" is used for "suddenly", of course, but "hyokkori to" is used more for its meaning. The most used meaning my link shows is "lightly" in the form of "hyoi tto". That is my own sense... Anyway, what I wanna tell you is the meaning of "by chance, suddenly" leads to "with the easy or light feeling for the agent to do the action with", i.e, "doing sth quickly or suddenly because of its easiness". --Masuo64 06:04, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
::I appreciate your input, and I certainly trust your judgment as a native speaker. I just wanted to clarify my own source of information so you'd understand my decision. I also wanted to compare notes.
Good Taste
Since the "umami" line in ケロ⑨destiny doesn't make much sense in Japanese anyway, why not allow a less literal translation?--Apcog 19:35, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

:Why I altered it back; I intended to show that the line is odd even in original language. So I don't intend to say my fixing line is OK as it is. On that point, my edit was thoughtless, and I'm not pround in my English level. Could you mind fixing it up? If you not, please! Your cleanups have helped me many many times. I admire your degree of taking care to know the other's idea in editing. Thank you for asking. Do you say "as" must be set before noun because it is preposition? Or that "as" is inappropriate? Then "Cirno of good taste" or "Cirno as good tate" is better, I think. --Masuo64 02:31, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
::I didn't want to get into an edit war; I've seen too many of those cause unnecessary arguments on wikis. The best way to avoid it is simply to ask the other person politely why they're reverting an edit.
::Thank you for your compliments. I don't contribute nearly as much as you do, so I try to make up for it by polishing rough spots wherever and whenever I can. I'm not always skillful enough to determine the intended meaning behind a rough translation, but I try my best and ask questions when I'm uncertain.
::As for "Cirno as good taste", it simply doesn't make grammatical sense. I think a rough Japanese equivalent would be うまみとしてチルノ, which I don't think makes any sense either. However, "Cirno's good taste" and "the good taste of Cirno" DO make sense, even if they're just sentence fragments. I just modified them a bit to make a pun on "taste" (flavor vs. discretion) and to fit the rhythm a little better. If you don't mind, I'd like to revert to my last version.--Apcog 08:30, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
I regret having to dispute you, but based on the lyrics I see here and what I hear myself, I believe it's "ペットに", not "ペットが". I'm willing to believe I'm not hearing it correctly, but if I am, than so is the person who did the subtitles. Is that the case?--Apcog 18:07, September 29, 2009 (UTC)
:Hmm, seeing your message, I repeated the music to find it's also heard as "ペットに". Umm, I'm rather hearing "ペットが". The consonants of those sounds are very similar. [ŋ] vs [n]. Of course, I sometimes do wrong, but such a fansubbed video also. For example, in the lyrics of the music, I can't hear "inki na rhythm ni..."

:Perhaps the storyline will help my interpretation:

:(1) If Satori says "somebody has made something terrible (to Orin)?" Satori would suspect the seducer like Kanako, who led Okuu to make the nuclear revolution. But Satori at least apologized in SA, "……なるほど、私の猫が迷惑を掛けてしまったようね ", when she met Reimu first. It's natural to scold her pet for her harming somebody rather than to suspect that there is the evil tempter is to blame and that her pet isn't bad. (Satori can't be a helicopter parent!) So do you think Satori should say "I wonder if my pet is doing something mad" than "I wonder if somebody has made my pet mad"?

:(2) After a while, Satori in the music said, "I see...that's definitely Orin' work." This shows that she suspected the criminal, Orin, first, not Orin's string puller, doesn't it? --Masuo64 21:35, September 29, 2009 (UTC)
On IN's title theme
You said to ask if there was a disagreement, so I will.

If the game's name is Touhou Eiyashou ~ Imperishable Night, and the title theme is Eiyashou ~ Eastern Night, and Eiyashou translates to Eternal Night Vignette, why is the song's name translated as Imperishable Night ~ Eastern Night instead of the literal Eternal Night Vignette ~ Eastern Night?
In fact, the list-by-songs page for IN points this out.--Selphos 06:46, March 15, 2010 (UTC)
: We-, well, but excuse me, data of my edits are numerous, and my opinion about this or that has been changing, I believe. So I don't remember saying "to ask if there is a disagreement". Where have you seen?
: For my current opinion, it's because the element of title name corresponds to the name of title theme. In fact, Japanese people normally see the title as "Eiyashou" (the element as Japanese proper word of title). You can see it on most of Japanese touhou fansites for them to call it as "永夜抄" (Eiyashou) and "永" (abbreviation). Based on the idea, when they see the name of title theme in Music Room, they should think that the name of title theme is copied from that of the title. This must suggest that recycling of title name be more important than literal or rough translation. But... the latter has some validity, I think, and I regularly like it, though. --Masuo64 09:30, March 15, 2010 (UTC)
::Ah, my bad, I had intended to point out that it was edit 59771 where you said that: (Undo revision 59769 by 59.146.196.177 (talk) the name is the same as title. if you find my edit fault, use talk page.)
::Anyway, I can see where you're coming from with that, and it makes sense, I personally just like the literal title translations. It doesn't help that there's an inconsistency on the wiki; see the name of PoFV's title theme, which is simply romanized as Kaiedzuka ~ Higan Retour, or LLS's, Gensokyo ~ Lotus Land Story, versus SoEW's, translated as Record of the Sealing of an Oriental Demon ~ Pure Land Mandala, or MS's, Wondrous Romance ~ Mystic Square. PCB as well falls into this second category. Though in LLS's defense, Gensokyo IS the name of the land...
: Wow, I'm happy to see your comment, MaronaPossessed! Hmm, what I can say about learning foreign language is, yap, me too. I *am* also learning English, both how to use it & how to be along with people speaking it. Regarding difference of sorts of ones's speaking language as tendency of individual's talent, character, or persona, I'm not an expert, but only better at dealing with certain works than other people on this website; anybody has a field he/she can do his/her best, like sprinting or sewing, and for me it's transcription of Japanese, explation around Japanese groups & culture. But frankly speaking, I'm bloody bad at proper English, so I'd like to leave it to you all... lol

: And, I've been recently rather a little free time, so, concerning transcription of "Unromanized" or "Untranslated" ones, I'll be less active in this field at least until May 2011. I'm sorry if you're disappointed to see my reply. :My opinion is those are probably enough.
:I have used the book "ja", which I bought for a class about linguistics of Japanese at the university. Maybe you know, the reference book about phonology usually adopts a simplified model. For example, some books spell a vowel of ja as /ü͍/, some do it as /ɯ/, and others /u̜/ (the last is less rounded). Another instance is the loss of the symbol of accent. I think the situation like those comes from the very very slow development of linguistics of Japanese language. :Yeah I was reading the manual after you gave me your proof. I've to admit I was in doubt of the translation a little bit but that's not the problem here: About the phrase ja, it does mean water level returning to its original level, but you can also understand it as water being drained out, so ja can be understood as "Inside the drained-out lake", or "Inside the lake with its water level receded" at least. Deathsoul4 00:03, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

::Sorry for late. I translated it as "... with the water dried up", but if it's unnnatural in English, plz fix it.
::"hiku" is spellt in several kanji: ja, ja, ja, ja... What concept those words shares is "take sth, and move (draw?) it toward to the self". In this case, it might well be ja. You should imagine opponent army fleeing & rushing. And imagine a water level decreasing or falling from the top of the glass in your hand. The image is very similar, isn't it?
::If the subject is the sea or tide, the translation "decreased" is OK; the tide comes near to us at night and go away from us in day — the movement is "increase" & "decrease", or alternative. But concerning lake, "decreased" isn't good; the lake hasn't any water. So "dried up" & "drained out" would be better. --masuo64 Talk 07:05, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
夢殿大祀廟
I am unsure how to interpret 夢殿大祀廟. As far as I know, 夢殿 refers to Yumedono, or the Hall of Dreams. Now, my question is whether it should be interpreted as "Hall of Dreams of the Great Mausoleum", the "Great Mausoleum of the Hall of Dreams", or even possibly "Yumedono the Great Mausoleum". Thanks in advance. - Kiefmaster99 01:19, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi, Masuo!
Just want to say thank you very much for all you did with the translations and transcriptions! Aha, I feel like I'm being a bit of a bother to you, since you seem to be cleaning up alot of my things and doing much more work than I wish I could have done. Just saying sorry if I ever did get in the way with editing the wiki or anything like that. ^_^;;
Regardless, thank you very much for your hard work!
