This is "Dream Express" for Mystic Square.

This song is full of all kinds of memories. I had planned on making Lotus Land Story the final game when I released it, and making it my swan song to the doujin community at that Summer Comiket, but it sold a lot better than I expected. That led me to not really being satisfied with the first stage theme of that song being too dark, so on the train home after the event, I came up with this song.

The song's title is more fitting than you might think.

Thanks to this song, I was determined to release another game in the short time between Summer and Winter Comikets (although ended up reliving the nightmare when I was making PoDD (^^;), and so I wasn't able to cleanse my hands of the whole doujin thing just yet.

I tried to make this song jazz fusion with a dash of hard rock. The sub-melody in the piano is my own style of complex jazz, and then I set up a simpler main melody and upbeat drum rhythm against that complicated backing. This is without a doubt the basic idea behind all Touhou songs.

It's a very moving song... no, really.

But I would like to say one more thing about it.

This song is REALLY dark (BA-BUM) and Shuusou Gyoku's False Strawberry is even DARKER. (Mwahahaha)

Well, I'll see you in the next song.
This is "Dimension of Reverie" from Touhou 5: Mystic Square.
I recall making the original song with the idea of a fusion of eastern and western styles.
If I had done it better, the mid-boss would have shown up as the song entered the last part of the hook.

In the arrangement, I kept the same image as the original, but made it even more mellow (for some reason).
I guess the original feels faster.
謎の多い曲だ... ほんとに私が作曲したのだろうか(^^;
Thank you for downloading this song.

This is Romantic Children from Mystic Square.

I want to feel nostalgic about it, but I really don't remember this song much.(^^;
Since I had no other choice, I remade it while listening to the FM version. As a result, it's pretty faithful to the original.

Since I don't remember anything from when I made the song, that means it wasn't that hard to make.
However, when it came time to rearrange it, I was surprised at how the chords are a lot more complex than they sound. Then it's almost three minutes before it loops. This song is just full of mysteries... I wonder if I even made it. (^^;

As for the arrangement, I'm pretty satisfied with it.
I stressed the romanticism across the whole thing. While listening to the original, I must have made the song with the idea of a precocious child in mind. With the latter half of the original song's intense, violent percussion, that seems to be the right answer. That does indeed bring out the childishness of the song. (Really now? (^^;)
Lately, I've been checking out using MIDI, but it turns out that it takes a strangely long time to write songs in it, but as I've been experimenting with the effects as well, it's starting to speed things up as I learn them. This song took about 2-3 hours to make. (^^; But then again, if you don't listen to it with an 88 Pro, it's pointless. (;_;
So, because of its complex base and melody, (^^; I could not change much so it's almost the same as the original. In fact, it was my first time where I could not have made it without looking at the original MML.
So it has the imagery of the world of ice. Where the tremolo string is vibing, it feels like we are in a cold place (laugh). I was thinking at first of orchestra feel (if at all) but it is slightly different.
This is "Forbidden Magic" from Mystic Square. It is a song that is awesome like a lie. Attempt to compare is out of this world (^ ^;
This arrange (doesn't feel like one) when finished sounded very cool. It has been a long time since I arranged. This is "Crimson Maiden ~ Crimson Dead!!" from Mystic Square. It is a short song. But, it runs with the whim of boss battles.
Although the original was made in haste within about 30 minutes, that made the arrangement much harder to come up. The base of the arrangement is thus all new by the way. (almost no change (^^;;) With the sound of cheerful bass - Do you feel a little sacredness and dashfulness, hopefully?
This is "the Last Judgement" in the Mystic Square. Throughout Touhou, out of a stage field song, this ranks 1st or 2nd, perhaps?

This song, I started by making my own theme, but felt that it does not fit well as well as I think I have made it perhaps far too good (^^;; thus I had promoted the piece to fifth stage theme.

The arrange of the 5th stage is to find balance in the sacred Western feel and the FM-ish game feel, (why?), and yet took the latter for direction. Thanks to that, I feel that the finished song does not impair the image of the original.

Certainly, the small fairy enemies of this stage, I remember that it was the same character in all different colors. That character (ghost with wings) had a lot of animation pattern (especially skirts) so it was quite easy to remember of its patterns. I'm sorry, but hey, That I'm lazy (^ ^;
I was trying to make a song that had the right blend of coolness and cuteness.
I'm pretty fond of it.

This is "Legendary Illusion ~ Infinite Being" from Mystic Square. Finally, I've arranged the song quite faithful to the original in a long time. But, I feel that it's flowing rather shallow, and at this rate it would be difficult to use in games.

As such, I have a tendency to unable to withstand the tension of such powerful boss songs (somewhat a lie), so this song also became a boss-like song only in the beginning part of it. I wanted to make songs that is really intimidating someday (which I could never make ((; _ ;)

The difficulty lied in the insufficient memory and of balance. (Is it not with the song?)

So Shinki and Yumeko, unlike the other characters, I wanted to portray them with a great impression (in drawing AND songs). but because the author was such a guy, they became similar characters like the rest. The white silver hair and the six blades of wings was to say a little, an attempt for difference (sweat)

Well then, let us meet again in the next song, shall we? ZUN
This is "Alice in Wonderland" from Mystic Square.

This is just my style. A perfect song to listen to in Danmaku games (big lie). the original song is about 2.5 times longer with loop, but the arrangement made it a lot faster. But the tempo have become a little slow.

Recently, I can't help but feel like the melody has fixed itself. It must be "Fantastica" that I'm feeling. This, is Touhou?

ものよのう(^^;

This is "Peaceful Romancer" from Mystic Square.

Since the song was too different, too, I was eventually had it reworked again.

At the end of the day, this song was my last in composing using FM sound. This is actually where I was going to seal my Doujin activities by the mark of this song, but no matter what I do, I could not wash my hands clean (^ ^;

Since it would have been the last, I was enthusiastically working myself for composing a bright and Eastern song, (^^;; but the arrange ended up with a dark feeling of sadness and apathy. (song was not bright after all)

Anyways, this is a finale ending song where Touhou Project itself lowers its curtains, and is quite emotional. Yes, it's true that this song is quite sad that so few people will ever get to hear it since it cannot be heard unless Extra Stage is cleared (^^;
Should explanations of literary references and such in song titles be put on Music pages (like this one) instead of on the script translation pages? Maybe put them in both places?

Moving song title explanations to this page will unclutter the script translation pages a bit as well as lessen the need to edit multiple pages whenever a title's translation is updated, or more information about it is discovered.
ZUN's comments have usually been in a somewhat joking manner from the previous interviews. I think that given our limited resources and abilities, editing it down to a form that reads well is sufficient until someone comes along with a high level of proficiency with both Japanese and English.

Sometimes ZUN even ends off his blurb with a (*laughs). I've added back one of them but there simply isn't enough room to put everything in. I suppose we'll just have to make sure the text reads in a jovial manner.
Something that bothered me for some time now:

The Doll Maker of Bucuresti - shouldn't that been Bucharest? It's written in katakana as ブクレシュチ, ZUN wrote it as ブクレシュティ, which would actually make more sense, since ティ is used to write a "ti"-sound from western languages, while チ is a "chi". I don't change it right away, since it's not really the "true" way of writing it in katakana, but one that sounds more reasonable.

I'm actually surprised, that nobody has asked this so far. - Arget 00:43, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
:I think Bucureşti or Bucuresti is better because Japanese normally say it as ブカレスト (bukaresuto), which might be loaned from German word "Bukarest". Normally Japanese call it Bukarest, not Bucureşti, but ZUN use the latter. So why don't we follow the original Romanian name? And about the topic of ブクレシュチ, you would be right. The present Japanese Romanization would be, frankly speaking, out of date. So they can't write down to distinguish the two sound in their proper writing system. Some Japanese are worring about this problem, then remake the system to write チ & ティ as ti & t'i. Of course it's not proper now...
::Yeah, just checked out that thread. When the song TL was changed to "Ink-black", I have a feeling that whoever changed it did not regard the TL note, probably because it only existed on the Spell Card page. When I noticed it was changed to "Ink-Black", I searched for other instances of Sumizome (in particular Yuyuko's penultimate SC) and found reasoning for its use. I would like to defend my original edit and challenge the current translation note. While it is true that there is a character named Sumizome in the play "Seki No To", I don't think this is what ZUN was going for when naming this song. My main piece of evidence is the page for all variants of the spellcard "Cherry Blossom Sign 'Perfect Cherry Blossom of Sumizome'" on the Japanese Touhou Wiki. There it mentions a legend regarding someone named Kamutsuke no Mineo, who upon the death of his friend wrote the following poem: "Oh, cherry blossoms in the fields of Fukukusa: if you have a heart, bloom ink-black just for this year" (this is a rough translation. I'm not a poet; I was just going for the meaning). The legend goes on to say that after he finished writing the poem, the cherry blossoms near where his friend was buried all bloomed ink-black. While the article does say that the variety of cherry blossom sumizomezakura and the name of an area in Kyoto, Sumizome, come from this legend, I still think that the title of the song and spell card should have "ink-black" instead of "Sumizome". First of all, there's a connection between the poem and the title name in that they are both requesting cherry blossoms to bloom. Secondly, it's much easier for a native English speaker to understand. Even if they don't know the legend, it's only one step to have a note about the legend and the poem than to have the legend and the poem and mention the variety of sakura, especially since I think this is probably referring to the color ink-black rather than the variety. The character in "Seki no To" is an interesting connection, but consider this: the play was first performed in 1784, whereas the legend mentioned on the Japanese Wiki dates back to the Heian period (794-1185 AD). By the time "Seki no To" was written, That legend had long been in circulation, and if anything the name Sumizome probably refers back to that. Plus, the play isn't mentioned at all on the Japanese Wiki. I agree that literally translating names of people and places is dumb, but I am arguing that "sumizome" in the song/spell card names is not a proper name, but just a color. I will wait for any counterarguments before I change the names, but I'm not backing down just yet. Sensei-Hanzo 16:55, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
::::Did you even read what I wrote? I addressed the matter of Seki no To and I think it's secondary to the Kamutsuke no Mineo story. I agree it's a striking similarity, but it's not even mentioned on the Japanese Touhou Wiki. It's possible ZUN was going for a double meaning, but I think that ink-black should take priority. I don't mind if you want to add a note about the similarity to the play, though. Sensei-Hanzo 19:17, 18 October 2011 (UTC)
::In that case, I'll go ahead and change the English translation back to an exclamation point, since we should never change the English section of the original title, no matter how wrong it is.

What tone are these comments written? Jokingly? Mockingly? Is it serious at any point? Are there any native English speakers on this board who are even close to fluent? An editor of a translation who can't understand the language is kind of a joke, unfortunately. J5983 22:04, 18 Jul 2005 (PDT)
Should these comments be edited more extensively, at the risk of losing original meaning, or be left as they are in a more literal state? Can they be rewritten into a more coherent form? -Breathstealer 08:40, 13 Aug 2005 (PDT)

Where do you think a good place for the manual text describing the music tracks should go?

Stage 3 Theme

There might be a translation inconsistency between the new title of this song and one of Yuyuko's spell cards.

Spell Card:

Cherry Blossom Sign "Perfect Cherry Blossom of Sumizome -Seal-"

(Sumizome: name of the spirit in a cherry tree in the Japanese play, "Seki no To")

Song Title: 幽雅に咲かせ、墨染の桜 ~ Border of Life (Yuuga ni sakase, Sumizome no sakura ~ Border of Life,

lit. "Bloom Nobly, Ink-black Cherry Blossoms ~ Border of Life"

I would be tempted to change "Sumizome" to "Ink-Black" in the spell card name, but there's a TL note. Your thoughts? Kiefmaster99 13:20, February 10, 2010 (UTC)
:Kobayashi's:
:Literal translations of place/person names are retarded. It'd be like translating it as "source of the sun" instead of "Japan".

:Additionally, it's far too late to change it - Bloom Nobly, Cherry Blossoms of Sumizome ~ Border of Life is the popular translation by now.

Thus, I will be reverting "Ink-Black" to "Sumizome" with the TL note unless anyone objects here.

::With regards to your second argument though, I'm just going to quote T. Solamarle from the MoF music talk page
::More correct translations should be preferred over incorrect "established" names.

::With regards to putting TL notes on the Music Page, I argue it helps for understanding, plus its been done for references that only exist in the music title. - Kiefmaster99 01:49, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

Who done it
What's the punctuation at the end of "妖々跋扈 ~Who done it"? Several Japanese sites I've seen have it listed with an exclamation point at the end while here we have [had] it as "妖々跋扈 ~ Who done it?". Some clarification on which one is more correct would appreciated. !8RstuPId2Y 02:21, April 10, 2010 (UTC)
:In the Japanese version of the official game, it's an exclamation mark. Presumably whoever did the translation on the wiki (and the patch) decided that a question mark was more grammatically accurate.
What are the chances that ルーズ is "Loose" or "Ruse"? "Lose" doesn't make much sense in terms of context. - Kiefmaster99 23:58, August 16, 2010 (UTC)
:I carelessly thought it was "Loose Rain", didn't notice the missing "o". - BrassBird 05:00, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
::At any rate, Google is telling me that "Lose" is the most common TL among the Japanese. Whether it stemmed from here, I'm not sure (though I'm inclined to think it didn't since they have their own list of SC translations); just throwing that in here. - Kiefmaster99 01:36, August 18, 2010 (UTC)
:::The EX boss is Marisa, whose family name is Kirisame (drizzling rain). Drizzle is the sprinkle or natural light shower... It's loose rather than bound, both of which might associate you more easily with Suika's ability, though... Well, anyway, I prefer "Loose" to "Ruse". --masuo64 Talk 06:16, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
::::I'm leaning towards Ruse when the music comments are considered. A prank-like feeling, similar to a ruse. Now "rain" I'm less sure about, considering the different homophones of rain/rein/reign/etc. Maybe ZUN intended this ambiguity as a joke, dunno. - Kiefmaster99 10:58, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
:::The thing about "loose" is that would be more like... well... I'm personally going with "Lose" for obvious reasons, but between "Loose" and "Ruse" I would definitely go with the latter. Despatche 15:04, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
::::Japanese usually use a loanword "ルーズ" to mean "loose". E.g., "あいつは時間にルーズだ" (The guy is loose with time). As my personal opinion, I doubt that ZUN really knew "ruse", the existence of which ordinary Japanese don't know. --masuo64 Talk 15:16, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
:::::Really? That doesn't make any sense... that makes it sound like "lose" and that's simply not how "loose" works... I really don't know anything about this language, I guess. Despatche 16:03, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
::::::I'm inclined to believe that ZUN has extensive knowledge on various katakana words, given the diverse names of spell cards. - Kiefmaster99 16:29, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
:Counting the recent edit as a vote, this now puts the situation as 2v2. I still believe that spell card comments are a stronger indicator of which form we should choose rather than who the EX boss is. Stage music comments tend to not reference the boss of that stage much (although they are sometimes used to represent bosses in multiplayer games). There is no explicit mention of Marisa in either that part of the stage or in the comments.
:There is a possible counterargument to my position however as I just realized today. The comments also make mention of "falling petals of cherry blossoms". Now this, I can accept as supporting "loose" over "ruse".
:I'm also somewhat convinced that ZUN chose the name deliberately for its several possible interpretations, maybe worthy of an ED note. Touhou Motoneta does mention several possibilities. - Kiefmaster99 19:29, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
::What about these two dictionary entries that list "loose" as a definition for ルーズ but don't mention "ruse" at all? For those arguing that it's pronounced ruuzu and so it means ruse or lose, check the note at the bottom of the second entry: 英語の発音では、ルース。 ("Pronounced as ruusu in English"). "Loose" is an accepted meaning for that word, whereas "ruse" is not. With Masuo's support, I think I can say that the large majority of Japanese people would not even think of the word ruse when they see ルーズ.
::And, what about the fact that the dBu remix of the song is called "霧雨 ~ Loose Rain"? That seems like a pretty strong link to Marisa, and furthermore it's a Japanese person translating it as "loose". Honestly, the song-comment argument seems pretty weak to me. A ruse and a prank are different things. While the word "trick" can be a synonym for both, it's still different (note the first and third definitions). - Sensei-Hanzo 21:57, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
Faily Wars
Wouldn't it be better to just keep this typo as is? It's still that way in the game itself and unless ZUN patches it (very funny) it's never going to go away. Whether or not it was corrected later shouldn't be an issue.

We should keep "Faily Wars" and, in the description, mention that it was later corrected (put a link to the album?), instead of the other way around. If the English patch corrected it (I don't remember it doing so), that should be mentioned too. Of course, if ZUN ever does patch it, it should be corrected but the typo should still be documented. Despatche 15:00, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
:It is typo, as in the original Music Room description is written as "Fairy Wars" - KyoriAsh 15:57, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
::Oh Shit Son! I just noticed that. I don't remember that at all, how terrible of me. I still think the display title should still be "Faily Wars" because it's still there, but the description shouldn't change. It may be better to point out that the song description spells it with an R (and this spelling was used later) alongside this change. Despatche 16:00, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
:::Faily Wars typo should be noted as of now, as the original title mentioned below the description indeed is Fairy Wars - KyoriAsh 16:05, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
Sensei-Hanzohttps://en.touhouwiki.net/index.php?title=Great_Fairy_Wars/Music&diff=215451Great Fairy Wars/Music2011-08-28T13:41:54Z
Sensei-Hanzo: Ruse -> Loose. masuo64's comments on the discussion page pretty much sum up why it should be this way.

This song was once recorded for the Three Fairies tankoubon. I'd originally planned to use it as a stage one theme, so this song must be satisfied to finally have that wish granted.
It is for the last boss battle, but players can reach it quickly, so it was hard to decide how heavy the song would be.
