Mamizou Futatsuiwa (ja ja, ro. Futatsuiwa Mamizou) is a Tanuki, first appearing in Ten Desires as the boss of the extra stage.

Concept
Based on Danzaburou Danuki of Sado Island, one of the most famous tanuki in Japanese folklore, along with Hage Danuki of Yashima and Shibaemon Tanuki of Awaji Island. He was the boss of tanuki on Sado, who drove off the foxes from the island. In another, Danzaburo was a money lender, who freely loaned money to the people. He was also said to be responsible for mirages at Futatsu-iwa, a rock formation in Aikawa, Sado.

Name
Futatsuiwa (ja) literally translates to "two stones", perhaps a reference to the tanuki's inflatable testicles, but also a location in Sado where tanuki were prevalent.
"Mami" may have reference to mami (魔魅), means "deceiving spirit" or mami, means "badger" or "racoon dog".

Appearance
As with most Tanuki from Japanese myths, Mamizou carries a bottle of sake and a booklet of promissory notes.

Occupation
Her role is to become a strong ally in the youkai forces.

Story
;Ten Desires
:
Mamizou is secretly called in by Nue Houjuu from the outside world to become a strong ally on the youkai side against Toyosatomimi no Miko and her faction. She arrives late however and Miko had already been defeated by the heroines. She later takes up residence at Myouren Temple.

Relationships
Mamizou is friends with Nue Houjuu and is living at Byakuren Hijiri's temple.

Additional Information
Trivia
*She is the first female character in the Windows series to wear glasses. The first in the entire series is Rikako.
*She was probably partly inspired by Studio Ghibli's film "Pom Poko", which features similar tanuki leaders summoned from Shikoku to aid youkai from an overwhelming human threat.

Fandom
*Because of her name, many fans depicted her in many situations that were similar to those experienced by Mami Tomoe from Puella Magi Madoka Magica due to its popularity.
*Some fans depict her as Mamio, referencing Mario, who could wear a Tanuki suit in Super Mario Bros. 3
*Since her profile says she dislikes foxes and may cause trouble with the foxes of Gensokyo, fans depict her as having an antagonistic relationship with the kitsune Ran Yakumo.

Mamizou Futatsuiwa

Species: tanuki

Ability: the power to make things change shape

A youkai tanuki of proper upbringing.

An unusual youkai that lived outside of Gensokyo.

She's made her way inside this time to help out an old friend in a pinch.

Tanuki take great pleasure in watching the reactions of humans
that they trick, so they seldom take direct damage. They are
more powerful on the night of a full moon.

Their ability to shapeshift makes them similar to the nue.
Neither of them seem to be terribly effective youkai when it
comes to close combat.

Can this kind of youkai really hold her own against Miko?
After all, youkai are fairly self-centered and don't take or
give orders easily, so no matter how many would stand up to
her alone, they'd still lose in the end.

It seems she'd lived together with humans in her home town (Sado).
Sometimes she'd trick them, but she'd also lend money to the
poor and worked diligently on any task she was given, so she
integrated well into human society.

She doesn't get along with foxes, though, and there's a rumor that
no foxes live in Sado.

She would end up causing trouble with the foxes of Gensokyo, but that's a story for another day.

Is Letty actually a fairy? Her entry in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense suggests that she is a youkai (specifically a Yuki Onna), but not a fairy.

Not a fairy. Certainly.

Note. Elves and Elfs are very different. In fact Tolkien invented the word Elves precisely because his vision of elves was so far from the common idea of little gnome-like elfs.

Spirits and Trance Mode
So this is how I understand it:
Spirits, in addition to increasing the amount of lives and bombs you have, and increasing the value of point items, als increase your trance meter. This is confirmed by the manual.
Once a symbol on the trance meter has been filled, upon death, the player goes into a prolonged state of invincibility and "nuke everything to makai" (also confirmed by the manual), which drains all of the meter. This period can be extended by collecting further spirits (which for some reason look differently. Does it also change something gameplay wise?). Then you die and it's business as usual.
Power and point items are unaffected by trance mode, but what about Life and Bomb spirits and stuff? --Wymar 10:40, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

Appearance
As with most Tanuki from Japanese myths, Mamizou carries a bottle of sake and a booklet of promissory notes.

Occupation
Her role is to become a strong ally in the youkai forces.

Relationships
Mamizou is friends with Nue Houjuu and is living at Byakuren Hijiri's temple.

Story
;Ten Desires
Mamizou is secretly called in by Nue Houjuu from the outside world to become a strong ally on the youkai side against Toyosatomimi no Miko and her faction. She arrives late however and Miko had already been defeated by the heroines. She later takes up residence at Myouren Temple.

Additional Information
Trivia
*She is the first female character in the Windows series to wear glasses. The first in the entire series is Rikako.

Fandom
*Because of her name, many fans depicted her in many situations that were similar to those experienced by Mami Tomoe from Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
*Some fans depict her as Mamio, referencing Mario, who could wear a Tanuki suit in Super Mario Bros. 3
*Since her profile says she dislikes foxes and may cause trouble with the foxes of Gensokyo, fans depict her as having an antagonist relationship with the kitsune Ran Yakumo.

Their ability to shapeshift makes them similar to the nue.
comes to close combat.

Toyosatomimi no Miko (ja ja )

Concept
Toyosatomimi is based on Prince Shotoku (聖徳太子), also known as Prince Umayado (厩戸皇子) or Prince Kamitsumiya (上宮皇子), who was a legendary regent and politicial figure of the Asuka period, living from February 7, 574 – April 8, 622. He was purportedly born in front of a horse stable, being named Umayado, lit. "prince of the stable door" as a result. He was crucial in the spread of Buddhism in Japan and according to folklore, could comprehend ten simultaneous conversations, like his Touhou namesake. Because of this, he was also named Toyosatomimi, meaning "abundant, clever ears". He eventually came to be recognized for his contributions and was seen as something like a saint, but some accounts of his life have also been subject to criticism and debate. Other names he's known by are Kamitsumiyaou (上宮王), Kamitsumiya no Umayado no Toyotomimi no Mikoto (上宮之厩戸豊聡耳命) in the Kojiki; 豊耳聡聖徳, 豊聡耳法大王, and 法主王 in the Nihon Shoki; and his most famous, Shotoku, in the Kaifuso.

Name
Appearance
In Ten Desiress official art, Miko has very light, almost platinum blonde hair, styled like horns as well as gray eyes. She wears purple headphones bearing the chinese character meaning "Harmony" (ja). Her clothes are a purple dress under a white vest with elaborate trimming. She holds a shaku and carries the Big Dipper Sword on her waist, identical to the picture on this page.

Relationships
Additional Information
Trivia
*The butterfly that Miko uses in some attacks probably alludes to the story of Zhuangzi's butterfly dream, one of the most well-known Taoist philosophy stories.
*If you look at Miko's left hand, you can see that it was drawn incorrectly. Her fingers should be showing while her thumb should be hidden. Basically, it looks like she has two right hands.
*With seven spell cards, Miko is the first final boss since the spell card system was introduced to not have either five or six spell cards, except for Kaguya who has ten.
*Miko is the first and only game character whose precise age and birth date is known (assuming Miko is Prince Shoutoku). Remilia and Flandre's years of birth are known but not their actual birth date and Chiyuri and Yumemi's ages are known, but not their birth date.
*The sword is assumed to be Shichi-sei ken (ja), a Chinese-made sword originally owned by her namesake which was influenced by Taoism. It is one of two swords Prince Shotoku was most famous for.

Fandom
*Because of her stage theme and her headphones, she was described as a DJ just as she was unveiled.

豊聡耳 神子(とよさとみみのみこ)

Toyosatomimi no Miko

| translation = ○ Stage 6 Boss Shoutoku Taoist

Toyosatomimi no Miko

Species: Saint

Ability: the power to listen to ten people speaking at the same time

Born in a stable, she was recognized as a genius at an early age.

Born into a high position, she overheard many complaints when she was young.

People would let their tongues loose around her, assuming she wouldn't be able
to understand them, so she heard a lot of idle grumbling from servants and such.

However, Miko was able to understand them - and provide very specific advice
right away.

Rumors of her spread throughout the land, and she gained enormous popularity as
a saint.

She had her own troubles as a genius.

"The earth hasn't passed on from the age of the gods, and the seas are filled
to the brim.

Why must humans be forced to accept their own death?"

She became dissatisfied with her fate that, as a human, she would eventually die.

Seiga, who had heard the rumours about Miko, was confident she'd found the
person she'd been looking for, and came to spread Taoism to her.

Taoism was essentially nature worship, and by becoming one with nature it
could bestow immortality on its followers.

Miko's heart danced in joy.

She also told Seiga that her faith could never lead to the subjugation
of Japan.

Seiga didn't care about national politics so long as she could further her
own goals, but Miko held a different view.

In that case, Seiga recommended, she should make the appearance of becoming
a Buddhist. When Miko learned Buddhism was a strict creed that forbade
murder, she determined it would be a good means to calm the nation, and
accepted it.

Miko spread Buddhism throughout Japan, in order to ensure that those
without political power would not gain power. In the shadows, she
advanced her own experiments with Taoism.

As a result, she obtained superhuman abilities and left behind a number
of legends with which everyone is familiar.

She didn't neglect her work towards her ultimate goal of immortality.

She turned to the use of various unusual materials, such as cinnabar.
This ruined her body.

She had destroyed her health because of the very Taoism that was
meant to grant her immortality.

Thinking she'd be unable to wait long enough with the state her body
was in, Miko decided to become a shikaisen.
This was a secret technique in which she would die (or make it appear
that she'd died) and be resurrected.

However, afraid to undergo the procedure alone, she reached out to
Futo, and convinced her to go to sleep first.

Believing in Miko's power, Futo became her test subject. Once Miko
confirmed that, after death, Futo continued to sleep without decaying,
Miko went to sleep herself.

Miko had planned to awaken when the nation felt limited by its
Buddhist precepts and felt the need for a saint. However, her
calculations went awry, and the nation was controlled by Buddhism
for over a thousand years.

Because Buddhist monks continued to place seals on Miko's
mausoleum, she was unable to resurrect. Miko's plan had
been foiled.

Miko judged she had no need to rush and could resurrect herself
at any time, and so continued sleeping. Finally, the time of
her resurrection came.

The trigger was a rumor that the legends regarding her were all
fabricated. Since, in modern times, there were no more people
with superhuman powers, it wasn't surprising that tales of her
exploits were seen as simple lies.

As a result, her mausoleum ended up in Gensokyo. Since there
weren't any temples in Gensokyo at that time, she prepared for her
resurrection to proceed whenever she felt it was necessary.

At about that time, though, a new temple was built.

And, whether by plan or by chance, it was built directly over her mausoleum.

That was, of course, Myouren Temple.

Would Miko let herself be held back by a Buddhist monk once more?

Or would she fight that monk?

A fight just like the battles between the Mononobe clan (of the old gods) and
the Soga clan (of the Buddhists) had fought over and over so long ago?

Is there a reason for this?
"By the way, if you shout “Bakayaro”(Idiot) when you go to the sea, the fishermen would be surprised."

I'm curious why we've got the romanised version of that word followed by (the translated word)? Or is it all going according to keikaku?

keikaku means plan. --DarkOverord 15:25, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

And while I'm at it...

"Well of course the Echoes (Yamabiko) get bored, it's understandable for "

Now we've got the translated word followed by what is probably supposed to be there... In context "The echoes" makes no sense as opposed to "The Yamabiko" the species of Youkai: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gazu_Hyakki_Yak%C5%8D
--DarkOverord 15:35, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

You're right, this makes no sense. Obviously 山彦 refers to the species. And obviously バカヤロー refers to idiot, so there's no point in leaving the japanese and then specifying the english translation afterwards.
I'm surprised we don't have stuff like "Do hito(people) still shout “Yahou(yahoo)” when they go to the yama(mountains)."
Well, I ruined the keikaku(plan), anyways.

(referring to stage 4 boss theme) Also, 塗り壁 in the original almost certainly refers to the youkai, so the translation should keep the name as 'Nurikabe'.
Sumisumihttps://en.touhouwiki.net/index.php?title=Ten_Desires/Music&diff=210442Ten Desires/Music2011-08-16T00:49:38Z
Sumisumi:

Also, 塗り壁 in the original almost certainly refers to the youkai, so the translation should keep the name as 'Nurikabe'.
Sumisumihttps://en.touhouwiki.net/index.php?title=Talk:Nitori_Kawashiro&diff=195582Talk:Nitori Kawashiro2011-07-04T12:04:56Z
Sumisumi:

Hi, would like to ask if the reference to Kawashiro Mitori (not Nitori) came about and if such character really exist?
Thanks!
:No, it seems Mitori doesn't really exist as a character. From my understanding, she was a custom character added in by a fan into Subterranean Animism. However, she may also have had another origin. --ArseneLupin3 20:32, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

General Information
Kyouko Kasodani is a youkai that embodies mountain echoes and is able to reflect sound waves. She appears to be a recent newcomer to Myouren Temple, though no reference is made to the characters already living there; with mountain echoes no longer being seen as strange, she decided to enter the Buddhist discipline. She seems to be responsible for cleaning duties and confronting trespassers, such as the player in stage 2 of Ten Desires.

Other Information
Name and Concept
* The characters for Kasodani literally mean "Ghost Valley", and Kyouko "Echoing girl". The 2 kanji characters for her surname are separated from the 2 characters for her name, but if you put them all together minus the last kanji, you will get the ateji spelling of "yamabiko" (ja), the name of her species, which is now normally spelled as ja or ja. [informative link (1) (2)]

Trivia
* When Kyouko is ready to launch her next wave of an attack, her sprite is animated to make a shouting motion. Her ears vibrate extremely fast, almost like a blur.
* On Kyouko's lifebar, her surname is incorrectly written as "Kasoya".

* Because of her ears, portraying her as a canine, with the addition of a tail and/or other dog attributes, is common.
This is despite the fact that a Yamabiko is not a dog.
Kasodani Kyouko

Kyouko Kasodani

Species: Yamabiko

Ability: Power to reflect sound waves

You may have loudly shouted "Yahoo-!" when climbing a mountain. If a response "Yahoo-!" comes back to you, then it must be a work of Yamabiko.

She lives in the mountains, and when she hears a joyous sound, she replies back with a loud voice. A good youkai with kind heart.

But these days, superstitions like "Yamabiko (mountain echoes) is just a reflection of sound waves coming back to you-" have become common beliefs. Realizing the emptiness of secularism, she decided to enter the Buddhist discipline.

Her ability works well with reciting Buddhist sutras. It is her everyday work in the mountains.

And by doing so, she was feared recently as "a sutra-reciting voice coming from a mountain where nobody is living", so she was able to retain her place as a youkai.
I don't get how the name Kuroko is related to that Youkai when the name means Black Child...she's purple and red. Although not official, I'd say it's Marisa since she is so similar to her.MaronaPossessed 02:19, March 6, 2010 (UTC)
Foreigners really shouldn't try to come up with japanese names. ^_^; Noroko would be the far more obvious choice, but since she's such an unimportant character nobody really cares anyways, so just forget about it.
Sumisumihttps://en.touhouwiki.net/index.php?title=Talk:Unnamed_girl_on_DiPP_jacket&diff=185129Talk:Unnamed girl on DiPP jacket2011-05-19T19:49:38Z
Sumisumi:

[informative link (1)]

Trivia
* When Kyouko is ready to launch her next wave of an attack, her sprite is animated to make a shouting motion. Her ears vibrate extremely fast, almost like a blur.
* On Kyouko's lifebar, her surname is incorrectly written as "Kasoya".
Kasodani Kyouko

Species: Yamabiko

Ability: Power to reflect sound waves

Perhaps you loudly shouted "Yahoo-!" when you climbed up the mountain. When a response "Yahoo-!" Comes back to you, then it must be a work of Yamabiko.

She lives in mountain, and when she hears a joyous sound, she replies back with a loud voice. A good youkai with kind heart.

But these days, superstition like "Yamabiko is just a reflection of sound waves coming back to you-" is a common belief. She realized emptiness of secularity, and decided to enter Buddist discipline.

Her ability works well with reciting the Sutra. It is her everyday work in mountain.

And by doing so, she was feared recently as "a reciting voice coming from a mountain where nobody is living", so she was able to retain her place as a youkai.

Screens
I've read trackbacks to the ZUN's post and someone noticed "You can't shoot when using slow movement" on the Youmu character selection screen! O_O There's a skull and a soul image in the bottom-left on the gameplay screens, and you need 10 pieces for a Bomb or life. Those red, green, and blue balls (seirei?) are cu~te. :3 Also you can see Reimu entering through something on the title screen - will the action take place in another world?! --.tomi 21:44, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
:Those balls make me worry that the UFO mechanic is going to show up in this game as well. ~Fenriswaffles 17:33, 1 March 2011 (UTC)
Was I the only one to notice that there's a screenshot of Marisa with lasers and one of Marisa with missles...? --BrawlerGamma 23:42, 10 March 2011 (UTC)
I bet the Extra Stage boss shall be, because the game is about "Divine Spirits", Mima. Discuss. *Shot*

I was thinking something like that but...does it really work out like that. I would love for Mima to come back but I think only Reimu, Marisa, Alice and Yuuka are the only ones who will be in the windows series from PC-98. But who knows right. --Hikaruxz 07:27, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

I wouldn't hold my breath on this. Remember "Undefined Fantastic Object"? Most people expected Mima or Shinki to make an appearance and yet it wasn't them. Yes, I agree it would be awesome if Mima did appear in this...but don't get your hopes up. Because of what happened on UFO, I highly doubt it. *sigh* MaronaPossessed 21:10, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
Possible Extra Stage Midboss? i mean, who expected Sanae to be the Extra Midboss for SA? Baptiejames 10:57, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Or maybe Mima's pattern will appear on a boss, or even midboss, we will face in this game? Just like how Byakuren had a similar attack pattern to Shinki's ._. --OMGOSHlol 21:34, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

:That one is likely, since it seems ZUN is recycling old attacks from the PC98 ages. MaronaPossessed 22:20, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
I'm going to have to disagree with you on the celebration. I find Sanae to be quite annoying, not for her personality but for her existance in Gensokyo, as it effectively breaks the atmosphere that Gensokyo is a fantasy world apart from our own. That being said, More Youmu! --Tomato 05:34, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
Temple or Mausoleum
Let's decide. It was Mausoleum, which seems to be what most are going with, but changed to Temple a day or two ago. Which one is it for certain? UTW 16:36, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
:廟 (びょう) most originally has a meaning like "mausoleum" - it is a Buddhist place for enshrining the dead/one's ancestors. Like it is used that way in the name of the tomb of the founder of the Joudo Shinshuu sect: http://www.hongwanji.or.jp/guide/otani/ . However, its meaning can be applied by extension to any grave/tomb and to places enshrining kami and buddhas so it is somewhat vague. (It even has some other meanings which probably do not apply here.) I think "Mausoleum" is still the most accurate translation of the meaning of the character itself, but I can also see good defense for "Temple" depending on the nature of the game, which is still hard to tell. RubyNightmare 19:47, 5 March 2011 (UTC)
::ja isn't only for Buddhistic place, e.g. ja, while ja is indeed facilities or monuments for dead/one's ancestors. 廟 originally means the building and site for Confucian (Chinese) people to pray at for their ancestors. (Confucianism's root characteristic is to pray for and look up to their ancestors, because its origin had started before Confucius appeared.) You can see the building (ja) to pray at every morning (ja). After a while, "their ancestors" was generally turned into "their ancestors & Confucious", and "great figures they look up to".

::So, what I wanna say is we should wait until the concrete concept and story are had public; "mausoleum" would be better if there appears some facitily, which was built to honor something like God Spirit ‐ "temple" would be if it's difficult to associate the facility with... yes. --masuo64 Talk 16:17, 7 March 2011 (UTC)
Release date
Due to the earthquake, Reitaisai 8 was cancelled. Since Reitaisai was cancelled, the demo was not released at that date (March 13th). However, Reitaisai 8 was rescheduled to May 8th. It is reasonable to suspect that the demo release date is unknown, due to the cancellation and all. However, I would like to raise the counterpoint that I have not seen any indication that the trial was not going to be released at Reitaisai 8. Is there any citation for this?
