Description
Moja stick (モジャン棒 mojanbou) are a Touhou Rock arrangement circle and the personal circle of Touhou arranger and guitarist 田中じゅんじろー.[1] The circle's arrangement style can be described as guitar-centric Alternative Rock that combines energetic and colorful staccato guitar patters with rhythm sections dominated by sharp guitar tones and pronounced baselines. Despite the guitar-centric nature of the his arrangement style, 田中じゅんじろー's vocals are central to many of Moja stick's arrangements, this results in Rock arrangements where the focus can alternate between vocals and lead guitar, but is also often shared by the two. The use of melodic basslines and the shared lead roles of vocal and guitar, when combined with the circle's tendency towards higher tempo arrangements and their occasional use of chorus melodies culminate in energetic Touhou Rock arrangements with a fair degree of melodic depth. In addition to Touhou arrangements 田中じゅんじろー has also released several original Vocaloid songs, many of which have promotional videos on niconico and can be viewed on 田中じゅんじろー's Vocaloid mylist.
Releases by the circle are primarily composed of their characteristic medium to high tempo Alternative rock arrangements but will usually feature outliers such as slowly building Rock ballads and short instrumental intro or interlude tracks. The circle's first album モジャのある生活 featured a greater emphasis on flowing guitar work more consistent with western Rock, but subsequent albums starting with モジャのみぞ知るセカイ released in 2013 more firmly cemented their arrangement style. Another notable change occurred in the circle's discography after the release of [maboroshinthe] in 2014 as subsequent albums would feature a clearer and more reserved mix when compared to the more aggressive approaches used prior. Albums released by Moja stick feature a distinct aesthetic as a result of the design and art work done by azayaction (a.k.a. sakuma) of 4989, this unity of aesthetic in the circle's discography goes beyond album cover art, as all of their booklet interiors notably feature collages made up of photography and abstract art over which the lyrics are artistically laid out. As 田中じゅんじろー is the sole member of Moja stick, it's releases have naturally featured his vocals almost exclusively, despite this there have been several occasions where other vocalists have been featured on his arrangements. The most notable example of this is the album モジャンガール☆宣誓ション!! which features an all female cast of vocalists, but there are several other instances where these same vocalists have been featured, such as guest arrangements (see guest arrangement section) and tracks from the album モジャの輪 that received post-release PVs featuring their vocals. Prior to founding Moja stick, 田中じゅんじろー was active in the Touhou doujin community as the president (社長) of a 5 piece Touhou Rock arrangement band called (有)はしやすめwithオンパシラオールスターズ (Hashiyasume Co.,Ltd. with Onpashira allstars), where he took on many important duties beyond his role as one of the group's guitarists.[2] As the president he was in charge of everything from the lyrics, to the mixing and mastering of their albums, to the arrangements themselves, 田中じゅんじろー was in fact actively involved in arranging music for both circles until (有)はしやすめwithオンパシラオールスターズ ceased activity in 2015. 田中じゅんじろー's personal website is called "口角ディストーション" (Koukaku Distortion) and should not be confused with the circle モジャン棒.
