| en  =I made it so it wasn't easy to notice. The fancier the effects, the harder it can get to see the bullets, but having no effects is boring, since it makes you feel like you aren't defeating anything. I try to give the bullets a certain light, and make the effects stand out in a way that doesn't distract too much. It's a matter that requires consideration. For example, in Battle Garegga, enemies burst into shrapnel, but you can't distinguish it from the enemy bullets. It's important not to go overboard.

| en  =It's not a very exciting song, but that's my favorite. I've thought that ever since finishing the game, although I'm not sure how many people feel the same. I like exciting songs too, but something about that slightly mysterious, nostalgic feeling really gets to me. Maybe it's just because I'm getting on in years, but I personally prefer songs with that nostalgia. As I've said before, I'm a bit of a reminiscer, but it's less about taking joy in nostalgic things and more liking that atmosphere of "the good ol' days." The song with that feeling has got to be the EX Stage theme. It made coming up with the name a little easier too. "Yesterday wasn't all that great, but tomorrow will definitely be good," like you might say when going to a town fair or something. Although nothing as noisy as one in town, more like going to a modest one at a neighborhood shrine.

If you look closely, you can see the symbol on her skirt is the character for misfortune (厄), although it looks like a swirl at first glance. Her taller collar looks sort of like a scarf, so I wanted to make it appear stylish and give it a Japanese-style pattern. In modern parlance, she's something of a socialite. Then the eastern design on her western-style shirt was also intentional.

| en  =It's strange, but the more I look into it, the main god of Suwa, Takeminakata, has shrines everywhere and is worshiped as the god of war and might. But he only retreated to Suwa after losing to Takemikazuchi, right? How a god that ran from battle be revered as one of battle? I tried to imagine scenarios where that could happen. And when I was looking up Kashima Shrine when I was making Mountain of Faith, I found out that one of the characters in Takemikazuchi's name may have come from one that meant "vessel." And those who fight with vessels use them to hold poisons or ingredients for spells, rather than relying on physical strength. So that put Takeminakata's defeat in a new light. His war prowess was unable to affect Takemikazuchi, or something like that. It's the complete opposite situation of Takeminakata defeating the Suwa gods. Now he wasn't running away, he was subjugating them. However, that brings up a bunch of contradictions, and it's hard to tell what's true anymore, but it makes for a better story. And I thought I'd write Mountain of Faith as a re-telling of that.

| en  =No, because of my personality, haha. And I was born during the snake, so they always seem to come up. When I was in school, they taught us how to catch pit vipers. Going a little off-topic, but whenever I would find an antlion pit, I would dig it up. They had plenty around the shrine, so I'd go there, collect a bunch and place them on top of the pillars and sprinkle some dirt on them so they'd try to dig under. Of course, since the pillar was too hard, they'd never get through, so I'd have fun watching them try, haha. They'd keep trying until the reached the sides, but it never entered their head that they couldn't burrow in it. They were convinced they'd find something, so they'd keep trying just a little but further back. It was almost like watching AI play itself out. Well, the "I" was less intelligence and more instinct, since it couldn't be considered a routine. It was enjoyable making observations like that. I wanted to watch all sorts of new things, whether or not it would prove useful to me or not.

Maybe not completely, but they certainly wouldn't get too emotional.

There are just so many things I learned that conflicted with my childhood memories. There's also the Jade Legend, which became the backdrop for Stage 2, but despite its dark image, the river it's based off of, Hime River, runs not far from my old home. I heard so much about jade and saw the jade decorations nearby. It made me believe there was an action legend. And getting a chance to work such childhood thoughts into a game like this is incredibly fun.

A Critical Restart

――

For your 10th game, Mountain of Faith, you spoke of throwing out several parts from previous works and starting from scratch.

ZUN

Yes, the entire source code was basically rewritten from the ground up, so though it might look similar on the surface, it's quite different. There was more stuff that I didn't need mixed up in the old versions than I realized, and I had to start by cutting it all out.

――

So for your others games, you would usually append to the currently existing code?

ZUN

More or less, since otherwise it would've made the fact that it was a series pointless, with all the previous work going to waste. But I knew I was going to need to start over at some point. Shoot the Bullet was a prototype, and then I built the new system on top.

――

It does seem that certain effects like the lasers are different.

ZUN

So you could actually say that Mountain of Faith is an expansion of Shoot the Bullet, like a slight upgrade.

――

In a previous lecture, someone seemed afraid that you would "reset" the characters by introducing an all-new cast, but that just turned out to mean going to back to only having two playable characters.

ZUN

I generally think its best for bosses to be new characters. That's what I meant by reset.

――

What about Aya? Hahaha...

ZUN

Well, she wasn't one to begin with so she has less spellcards, haha.

Crisis at the Hakurei Shrine?

――

The story begins with Sanae coming to the Hakurei Shrine and demanding that Reimu hand it over to them. That seems like a considerable predicament in my opinion, but did you intend for it to be so dire?

ZUN

Well, since the implication was that her surrendering the shrine would be for the best, Reimu became troubled and went to fight her. It wasn't exactly what she planned, but how it turned out. So in that case, it wasn't much of a problem, especially compared to previous incidents.

――

Indeed, since the ones before were practically cataclysmic. But isn't the Hakurei Shrine's reason for existence threatened? Kind of like a lone hero finding out there's an imitator, seeing as how the Moriya Shrine also has a priestess and gods.

ZUN

It was the easiest way I could have this game be a springboard for future stories.

――

Do you think Sanae will be playable at some point?

ZUN

Not really. It might be hard to pull off since she's a goddess with incredible powers.

Direction & Effects

――

When you defeat enemies, they release small maple leaves. It's a very nice effect, but it seems easy to overlook when playing.

ZUN

That was intentional. The fancier the effects, the harder it can get to see the bullets, but having no visual flair whatsoever is boring, since there's no sensation you're actually defeating the enemies. I try to give the bullets a certain color, and make the effects stand out in a way that's not too distracting. It requires a lot of careful consideration. For example, in Battle Garegga, enemies burst into shrapnel, but you can't distinguish it from the bullets. It's important not to go overboard.

――

And you need to allow for a certain degree to create a nice fantasy feel.

ZUN

But empty spectacle gets tiring, so it's vital to keep things in balance.

The Soundtrack

――

You previously mentioned that you thought Aya's theme (Mysterious Mountain) was a particular stand-out, but would you say the same now?

ZUN

Now, I think my favorite song in Mountain of Faith is the EX Stage theme.

――

Native Faith?

ZUN

No, I mean "Tomorrow Will Be Special, Yesterday Was Not." I really outdid myself there. If I had to describe it, it feels somewhat sad, but very bright. Just a wonderful piece of music.

――

Sort of like it's telling an old tale.

ZUN

It's not a very exciting song, but that's my favorite. I've thought so ever since finishing the game, although I'm not sure how many people feel the same. I like exciting songs too, but something about that slightly mysterious, nostalgic feeling really gets to me. Maybe it's just because I'm getting on in years, but I personally prefer songs with that nostalgia. As I've said before, I'm a bit of a reminiscer, but it's less about taking joy in nostalgic things as you age and more liking that atmosphere of "remember the good ol' days." The song with the most of that feeling is definitely the EX Stage theme. It made coming up with the name more fun. "Yesterday wasn't all that great, but tomorrow's gonna be good," like you might say when going to a festival or something. Although nothing as noisy as one in town, more like going to a modest one at a neighborhood shrine.

Do you think I'm going to let a shrine maiden eat me!?

――

Where did you come up with the Aki sisters?

ZUN

Nowhere in particular; my first and second-stage bosses are usually very off-the-cuff.

――

That's exactly why I have to ask where they come from, haha.

ZUN

They don't have much to do with the main story, but since the game's theme is "gods," I thought it would be best to emphasize it from the first stage, even in the title. "Myriad Gods" was more than enough, but I put "Autumn" in there anyway to make more amusing, hahaha. I wanted to make them god-like, but weak enough to make the player think "they're this wimpy?"

――

And a god that smells like sweet potatoes...

ZUN

When I showed the text to other people, they thought it was a typo. Reimu says "raw baked sweet potatoes," but there's no such thing. I had to keep telling them that was an intentional gag, haha. Raw baked sweet potatoes are just regular sweet potatoes.

Nagashi-bina of the Hidden God - Hina Kagiyama

ZUN

The Stage 2 boss is a lot more serious, character-wise.

――

And she suddenly attacks you.

ZUN

Of all the bosses in Mountain of Faith, I'd say she has the darkest appearance, and her bullets are the hardest to see. The red background doesn't help her red bullets stand out either, although that's just a problem with the system.

――

And her personality is also somewhat dark.

ZUN

That's because she comes from the custom of floating dolls down rivers to rid people of misfortune.

――

I see. So what about her constant spinning?

ZUN

There wasn't any particular reason, just that it seemed more doll-like to me, because she's basically a doll. I thought a doll that's too active wouldn't be right.

――

She seems to be spinning quite actively to me.

ZUN

It's more my interpretation that fully bending the joints like a human would be less doll-like than spinning around.

――

I see.

ZUN

The colors of Hina's outfit are more threatening to give her the feeling that she amasses misfortune. If you look closely, you can see the symbol on her skirt is the character for misfortune (厄), although it looks like a swirl at first glance. I thought it was fairly obvious, but not too many have picked up on it. Well, she's not that important anyway, although she seems a little stronger than most early-game bosses, being a goddess. However, she still can't resist her fate as a Stage 2 Boss.

――

In Stage 2, the difficulty goes up when she appears.

ZUN

Because the misfortune of the mountain youkai is flowing down. I imagine it to be the downstream part of the river in Stage 3, although while Stage 3 is vivid and lively, Stage 2 is much darker.

ZUN

Although the bosses up into now were based on something or another, there was no particular base for Nitori, haha. Stage 3 is when you start climbing up the mountain proper, so I tried to give it a lively feel.

――

Kappa are so common, there isn't a single Japanese person who hasn't heard of them.

ZUN

They are pretty popular, probably the most popular of all youkai. People certainly have a yen for them.

――

They're well-known from the commercials of a brand of sake.

ZUN

I love those commercials, though I haven't seen one in a while. Watching them as a kid, I got the feeling that drinking alcohol was a lot of fun. My image of kappa was strongly influenced by those commercials, even.

――

So does that mean Nitori is the same?

ZUN

Well, kappa have a number of fittings, like their head plates and their shells, where they can hide things.

――

And they look rather like kindergartners, don't they?

ZUN

They do appear like school children, but they aren't all like that. But since they're engineers, they wear those outfits...

So they go to an engineering school?

ZUN

Of course not, haha. I imagine them to be technicians. The concept of kappa probably came out of refugees from ancient China and Korea who settled by the river and possessed superior technology. Even if that's not true, I feel like kappa are good at making things and proud of it, but they're a bit conceited. I tried to give her a more aquatic appearance as well, but somehow she came out to look like she's carbonated.

Aya Shameimaru

ZUN

I always picture the tengu of having a society. Aya here is not the reporter she was in Shoot the Bullet; she doesn't even mention her newspaper. I thought up of techniques she'd use as a tengu, and whenever she has to fight, this is what she looks like.

――

Have any players said that Stage 4 is hard?

ZUN

I think if you can clear Stage 4, the rest should be manageable, but Aya even says that she's taking it easy on you so don't blame me, haha.

――

Aya's outfit here appears similar to your regular wardrobe.

ZUN

I just thought I'd try to see how she looks in it. She could've appeared in the same outfit as before, since anything too outlandish would've been a mistake. Her collar stands out more and looks sort of like a scarf, which came from my attempt to make a trendy Japanese-style design, combined with a slightly modern look, mostly evident in the Japanese pattern on her western-style shirt.

――

Is Aya easy to use as a character?

ZUN

Yes, it's a very important quality for both the tengu and the kappa. As the tengu have formed a large organization, they are incredibly cunning and try not to instigate fights with other groups. Then, a character like Aya who is familiar with the humans makes her easy to insert when I need to. And given that the mountain is tengu territory, they had to appear in some capacity. She's in a position where she can meet just about everyone.

――

Is that why her shirt seems like a company uniform?

ZUN

That sort of shirt is something like what an actual career woman would wear, haha. I can't make her too tengu-like, such as giving her a long nose.

――

Is she the first Stage 4 boss with a spell card that you have to time out?

ZUN

That is how she shows off her intense speed, by moving so fast that you can't hit her. That was the only way I could get it across. And you can see as she's moving that she looks like a laser.

――

And you can't defeat her?

ZUN

I wanted to demonstrate her trait as "the fastest" and on Lunatic, you can clearly see there are 2 "lasers" to give the impression that there's two of her, haha.

――

Judging from the screenshot, I'd say there are three of her, haha.

――

Sanae has both snake and frog hair ornaments as part of her character design, so that makes it seem as if she worships two gods.

ZUN

I'm well aware of that, but it doesn't really have that meaning.

――

Because she's a god herself?

ZUN

That's right. She's a human, but she has the disposition of a god. She's a wind priestess by profession in the setting, but she's actually a living god, the Ohafuri of the Suwa clan. It's a hereditary position that gets passed down through the generations, with the current head of the clan assuming the role. It's not that the god is enshrined in their body, but they become the n-th generation Ohafuri.

――

I see.

ZUN

The idea of "living gods" itself doesn't exist anymore ever since Emperor Hirohito passed away. After the Declaration of Humanity, that concept probably worked its way down to Suwa, too. There may still be an Ohafuri, but they aren't divine, so I figured it'd be fine to bring that concept to Gensokyo where the gods are still thriving.

I was trying to make it seem like she was overflowing with divine virtue, haha.

――

That's what it looks like? Haha.

ZUN

Both of the gods have divine virtue, since Suwako also shines whenever she uses a spell card.

――

I only noticed her frogs.

ZUN

It has a bright appearance, but there are only 4 patterns drawn for the game.

――

I'd like to ask if that effect when the red, blue, and green orbs overlap was intentional.

ZUN

The ones that move a lot? They came from... "Tuesday Suspense," I think it was called; it's been too long. It was a program with an opening or commercial bumpers that had lights move in a similar fashion. It was based off of that. I wonder why they moved whenever the show started.

――

It's been a while since you've had a transforming boss. Was there a reason you decided to do one again?

ZUN

Do you mean the pillars on her back? I just thought it'd be a neat idea since they feature so prominently in the stage. Whenever anyone in Japan thinks of the Suwa festival, those pillars immediately pop into their mind, so it was an easy choice.

――

I see it on the news too, whenever someone gets hurt.

ZUN

People have died in that festival before, so I think it's incredible it hasn't been banned yet. Nowadays, so many events are threatened to get cancelled when people are injured, but that's the exception. Whenever anyone dies or gets hurt, that doesn't seem to dissuade people from participating in it. No one even rams portable shrines into each other because it was said to be too dangerous. I think that's what gives the Suwa festival its appeal.

――

Do you think the central authorities aren't able to influence it so easily?

ZUN

It gets stranger the more I look into it. The main god of Suwa, Takeminakata, has shrines everywhere and is worshiped as the god of war and military might, but he only retreated to Suwa after losing to Takemikazuchi, right? How can a god that ran away be revered as one of battle? It's too irrational, but I tried to imagine scenarios where that could happen. And when I looked up Kashima Shrine when I was making Mountain of Faith, I found out that one of the characters in Takemikazuchi's name may have come from one that meant "vessel." And those who fight with vessels use them to hold poisons or ingredients for sorcery, rather than relying on physical strength. So that put Takeminakata's defeat in a new light. His war prowess was ineffective against Takemikazuchi, or something like that. But still, it's the complete opposite situation of Takeminakata defeating the Suwa gods. No longer was running away, he was now subjugating the native deities. However, that brings up a bunch of contradictions, and it's hard to tell what's true anymore, but it all makes for a better story. And I thought I'd write Mountain of Faith as a reinterpretation of that.

Kanako & Suwako

――

In the real world, there are both Suwa and Moriya Shrines, with the latter housing the god of rain. Kanako & Suwako's relationship seems somewhat complicated, so do you think you could explain a little more about it?

ZUN

It's commonly said that Lord Mishaguji takes the form of a snake, like how he appears in the Megami Tensei series. But I thought that Takeminakata was more snake-like. It might not be obvious, but Kanako is based off of the real Takeminakata, as well as Yasakatome-no-kami. She is enshrined at the lower shrines at Suwa, and is said to be the wife of Takeminakata, but she rarely shows up in mythology if at all, so very little is known about her, which made researching her practically impossible. Not even going to the shrine itself helped any, and no one knows why that massive shimenawa rope is hanging from the front. The rope itself is famous, but not many know there's a tool they use to help wind the rope as well.

――

That makes sense! So then...

ZUN

There were too many mysteries about her, so I just had to take educated guesses, and crazy as it was, I ended up relating Kanako with snakes. And another interesting thing is how there is a ritual relating to catching and killing frogs at Suwa. One of Suwa's Seven Mysteries is the red frog and how it could always be found hibernating in a specific area around the new year. One of those red frogs would be killed and given to the head priest to eat, but they don't even seem to know why they do it. But because because of all of these inexplicable origins, they made interesting ideas for my game, haha.

――

This may be also considered "crazy", but maybe its supposed to represent holding down the former power.

ZUN

So that led to "What would tie frogs to a god of snakes... That could make for an interesting story" and so I ran with it. They say that Mishaguji is a snake, and I didn't see much reason to think otherwise. Snakes were long worshiped as gods, since the shedding of their skin made people believe they couldn't die. Though I didn't give Kanako the appearance of a snake, I gave her the personality of one.

――

And what would the personality of a snake be?

ZUN

In my mind, something of a sly deceiver. Their forked tongue gives them the impression of duplicity, and there's also how it was a snake that tempted Adam and Eve. But they weren't just villains, since they were still worshiped like gods, thanks to their shedding skin. When I was a kid, I found a shed snakeskin and put it in my wallet, because it was said that could bring fortune.

――

I don't think I've ever seen a snake's shed skin before.

ZUN

If I were to find one now, I wouldn't bother to pick it up though. I am fond of snakes, for some reason. Ever since I was younger, I was said to be snake-like, haha.

――

Was that because you were so skinny?

ZUN

No, because of my personality, haha. And I was born during the year of the snake, so I often have a chance to bring up my liking for them. I even learned how to catch pit vipers in school. Going a little off-topic, but whenever I would find an antlion pit, I would dig the little bugger out.

――

Sounds like fun.

ZUN

I mentioned it during a previous lecture, but if you shouldn't be too hasty to make progress. If you think of nothing but how to accomplish the next step you need to finish a task, doing an unsatisfactory job of it just to move on is a bad idea.

Reconstructing Japanese Mythology

――

In most of your works, you will research Japanese myths and legends and then offer side story-like retellings of them. The most obvious example of this is Kaguya Houraisan being the classic Princess Kaguya.

ZUN

There are so many things in the Touhou games with their own story. It makes everything bother easier to write and understand. Even such a fantastic world as Gensokyo has the possibility of becoming restricting, so by using the kernels of a variety of existing legends living in one place helps enliven things. Mountain of Faith is no different, although the models I used, Suwa gods, are a bit minor.

――

But it's not just Suwa, it's also how the player characters are exploring this new, larger area. Plus, although Kanako doesn't go that far, when Suwako shows up, it come across as a feud between indigenous gods and those that founded Japan, right?

ZUN

Even when playing it, it gets a little incomprehensible... I was going for a "Hey, she's bad news" sort of impression. There aren't any true "bad guys" in this game for the most part, although if I had to name someone, I'd say Reimu can be pretty cruel, haha.

――

Because she pretty much always gets her way in the end? Haha.

ZUN

Reimu defeats youkai, no questions asked. Whether or not that's a good thing is another matter.

――

Just like Mito Komon passing through, flaunting his seal of authority.

ZUN

That's enough to get them their fix, and they don't care about what happens afterwards, haha. I think he'd be a good character for a shmup, since you have to defeat all the enemies that appear. You don't really see shmups that make you do it against your will, although it's occasionally something in RPGs. You might be able to do it in shmups by changing the tone with music and such, but I think anyone willing to shoot something to smithereens won't really be conflicted like that. Maybe they would a little, but not enough to get emotional.

――

But I think that "no questions asked" side of Reimu as a character has positives.

ZUN

It's hard to tell if a character with a personality like that will be popular or not. She's a bit strange, but has a likable disposition, to me anyway.

――

But that also relates to that feeling of flexibility in Touhou has a whole. There are many characters that are far from desperate.

ZUN

Even the weak ones are pretty composed, and that doesn't change after they get shot up, haha. It's more fun like that. There's still conflict and character growth in my stories, but I personally don't want a whole lot. I think there are a lot of people who enjoy that lightheartedness.

――

Shmups are less about conflict and growth and more about excitement.

ZUN

Despite that, there are a lot of arcade games with dark endings, likely Ta●to's fault. Almost every ending in their games is terrible, haha. Like the Earth getting destroyed thanks to some deus ex machina, like the one where both you and the planet get destroyed after beating the game, haha. They seem to like that pattern.

――

It makes you wonder what the point of fighting was, haha.

ZUN

They probably find amusement in that completely empty payoff.

――

By comparison, Touhou seems rather bright. At the end of each game, everyone gets together for a party.

ZUN

Dark stories really don't suit danmaku games. Just the movements of the bullets themselves give this impression of non-seriousness. And since the fighting isn't serious, you'd be silly to give it a serious setting and system.

Suwa Legends

――

So you have these elements of warring Japanese gods, but they seem to be living in peace for the most part. And thinking about everything, does the story mean that the mythology of Suwa has passed into fantasy?

ZUN

They were never that popular to begin with. I was born in Nagano, so that's the only reason I heard about Suwa all the time. My family's home was near Suwa Shrine -- a small, unmanned shrine where it was said that every festival, there would be rain. I was taught that the god of Suwa was a rain god, but when I came to Kanto, I did some research and found nothing of the sort. There wasn't even any mention of a rain god at all, so of course I was more than a little confused. Everything I had been told was completely different from the legends in the books.

――

Has the part about the rainy festivals been passed down through the ages?

ZUN

It actually really does rain whenever there's a festival. It's held in a little hamlet every September 15th, and once it starts, it will begin raining without fail. It even rained this year, too.

――

Is that considered a blessing?

ZUN

Of course not, haha. I think it's more that whenever it does rain, it leaves a lot more of an impression than when it doesn't, so that's all anyone remembers. It's a matter of impact. And it's amazing how there there are just so many things I learned that conflicted with my childhood memories. There's also the Jade Legend, which became the "Horrid River" in Stage 2, but despite its dark image, the river it's based off of, Hime River, runs not far from my old home. I heard so much about jade and saw the jade decorations nearby. It made me believe there was an actual legend. And getting a chance to work those childhood thoughts into a game like that was incredibly fun.

――

So this is all sort of like a return to your roots. The entire game has this uncommon enthusiasm to it.

ZUN

But more than just working it into the game, simply researching all of it was so enjoyable. "So this is what they meant about all that stuff I heard so long ago." Of course, I still had to pick and choose what made it in, but I definitely wanted an overall Japanese feel.

――

As opposed to a vampire randomly invading?

ZUN

It's true that Embodiment of Scarlet Devil was more western-themed, but that was to give it a quality of surprise. It was the first Touhou game for Windows, and I thought a vampire living a big mansion at the end would do the trick, haha. There were lots more things like that, such as making an enemy with a powerful-sounding ability like controlling darkness the first stage boss, haha.

――

And giving her a western-sounding name, too.

ZUN

Since I wouldn't be able to surprise anyone like that anymore, I went ahead and made the Japanese-style game I wanted to release at that time now. And there's no resolution in Mountain of Faith either; it was designed to form a base for future installments, on several levels.

――

I can't wait to see how Touhou continues from here. Thank you very much for your time.
