Revision as of 23:04, 11 August 2017
This is a list of titles given to each character from each of their official profiles. Each title says something about the character it's been given to, even if some are rather ambiguous. The works each title has appeared in are listed in brackets next to the title. The titles are ordered according to the works' internal chronological order; for example, Imperishable Night follows Immaterial and Missing Power.
Some characters have multiple titles which may change from one game appearance to the next, and also have several names in a certain game. The characters that appear in Match Mode but not Story Mode of Touhou Hisoutensoku are excluded from the below chart because they only appear if Scarlet Weather Rhapsody is installed and take their titles from that game.
There appears to be characters from certain games that have a similarity to the rest of the characters titles. Here are a few examples:
- Titles from Shoot the Bullet and Double Spoiler are named quite jokingly or pejoratively by Aya.
- Titles from the Scarlet Weather Rhapsody story are constructed such as "Species/Occupation/Symbol of Weather", except those of the new characters, Iku Nagae and Tenshi Hinanawi, who still have the similar form "A of B".
- Titles from Wild and Horned Hermit are constructed such as "Species of Four Kanji Idiom".
- Titles from Forbidden Scrollery uses English (katakana) for the Species/Occupation.
- Titles from Ten Desires are constructed such as "Species/Occupation of XXX Desire" (○欲の××).
It should be noted that not all characters have an official profile to have received a title from.

(On the titles of W&HH 31st published in febri, 素兎 isn't read regularly as "shiro-usagi" but "su-usagi". This pattern of reading is "naked, of-skin, skin-peeled" — so this can be understood as "the skin-peeled rabbit", even though this reading might well be a typo.) |
Reisen Udongein Inaba |
|
(* The title on story mode of SWR literally brings the metaphor from the weather for Reisen's personality. But it could be possible that the weather indicates M6A1 Seiran, an attack floatplane of Imperial Japanese Navy; we would remember that Reisen used to be a soldier on the moon and her name shares the same sound with that of the most famous fighter aircraft of Japan in WWII — Reisen or Zerosen (零戦.) |

Nitori Kawashiro |

(* "Lateral-Thinking Kappa" is a homage to Gumpei Yokoi's phrase "Lateral Thinking for Withered Technology" (Kareta gijutsu no suihei shikou, 枯れた技術の水平思考). He is the creator of Game & Watch and the Game Boy, so this title is referring to Nitori's engineering geekiness.) |

(* 熱かい is a bit of wordplay involving "hot" (atsukai, 熱かい) and "treatment/management" (atsukai, 扱い). This phenomenon occurs for the fact that that word was originally indicated to be an ancient word "悶熱ひ懊悩む" (atsukai nayamu suffer from the awful heat).) |

(* "Big Wheel" (大輪) is a literal translation of either "largely blooming" or "a large flower", relating to the fact that "ichirin" is normally means "single flower" in Japanese as the unit of counting flowers. That helps explain the connection to the team's DS title.) |
Unzan |
|
(* A supplementary note is included above in one of Ichirin's notes.) |
Minamitsu Murasa |
|
|
Shou Toramaru |
|
|
Byakuren Hijiri |
|
(* The DS title is a parody of the "Tactics" setting in the Japanese version of Dragon Warrior IV that tells all CPU players to put priority into attacking enemies, "Let's beat 'em up." (gan-gan ikou ze, がんがんいこうぜ)) (* The FS 34th title has the Buddhist term Template:Lang-ja. In this usage, however, it isn't used in original Buddhism terminology, but in vulgar, derivational meaning; "to engage in, indulge in sth. (especially too luxurious or unproductive debauchery, like gastronomy, sexual intercourse, maniac collection, etc.)". Then that might be literally "Great Buddhist Prayer Reaching to Perfect Praying", but it should be normally read as "Great Buddhist Prayer Indulging Deeply to Praying".) |

Note: The title of FS 26th has a part キュリオス (kyuriosu) is ambiguous. If we read it quite literally as "curio-s", it would mean "curios' fellow" or "researcher of antiques". But if we remember the semi-official music theme of Rinnosuke is "Curious old Shanghai tile" (キュアリアス上海古牌) and find it shares phonemes quite similar to the word, it would mean "curious fellow" or "queer guy". Maybe it is a wiser path to see it a double meaning, than battle them to decide that there is only one meaning. |
