Christianity (キリスト教, kirisutokyou; Greek: Χριστιανισμός; Latin: Religio Christiana) is a monotheistic Western religion. Believing in only one god, Christianity is greatly different than Shinto which believes in many gods. While Christianity is prolific in many parts of the world, Shinto and Buddhism has remained the two dominate religions in Japan, placing Christianity as a minor religion in the country.

In Japan, Christmas (クリスマス, kurisumasu) is celebrated as a secular celebration for commercial purposes in the modern era; Christmas is not a national holiday but rather an popular event.

Christianity in Touhou

Christianity appears to hold little if no spiritual significance in the Touhou Project. One example would be the cross which has no effect on supernatural creatures like the vampire while Shinto charms and the Yin-Yang Orb inflict spiritual damage upon them (It can still be used as a projectile in danmaku).[1][2]

During Seiga Kaku's conversation with Youmu Konpaku, Seiga possibly refers to Toyosatomimi no Miko's resurrection similar to the western prophet Jesus Christ derogatorily referring him as an "pagan prophet" (country dweller), claiming Miko's to be far more grand and divine. It is unknown if Seiga has witnessed this event or simply heard of it some time later, but she wasn't impressed, likely because resurrections appeared to be rather common in her country. Because he was not mentioned by name, it cannot be confirmed as it could have been anyone.[3]

Defined by Aya Shameimaru, Christmas is a popular event in the outside world where Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) flies in by whipping animals, and breaking into people's homes. In exchange for toys, Saint Nicholas supposedly trades them for faith from children. Seiga Kaku decided to take the role of Santa Claus using her power to slip through walls in order to break in. Seiga mentions whether or not Santa Claus actually exists in Gensokyo nor does she want the faith of a gray haired old man, thus making a few modifications.[4] (Unrelated to the holiday itself, Aya mentions that the gray haired image given to Saint Nicholas is similar to the tengu's god, Sarutahiko and wants Seiga to refrain from having a gray haired appearance due to it's bad image.) This verison of Christmas has no relevance to the actual religion of origin itself and as Aya stated, much more fitting to define as an event. (Seiga Kaku presumably knows the original concept of Christmas.)

Among PC-98, Yumemi Okazaki used crosses as danmaku. She was questioned by Ellen if she was a Christian.
