Hourai
An illusory land referred to as "Fantasy Land[1]" or "Utopia". These words have shown up over and over again through our continuous human history. Several famous examples of these are "Avalon" from the Arthurian legends from England, or "Tír na nÓg", the land of faeries from Celtic mythology, or perhaps, a bit farther away, "Valhalla" from north Europian/Germanic legends, where brave warriors are welcomed by the valkyries. These fantasy lands are constantly changing through the transmission of the worlds' legends from people to people. You can say that they have a certain commonness to them, but in the world of the "Eastern" series, in a world rich with an oriental flair, the most famous Ideal Land would be "Hourai", or "Hourai Mountain".
Hourai, which was recorded even in the historical text from early Han dynasty "The Historical Records", is a holy mountain which exists at the edge of the wide sea east of China, the Bohai Sea. Along with the holy mountains Fāngzhàng and Yíngzhōu, they are called the "Three Immortal Mountains". It is believed that immortal, undying hermits lived there.
There has been attempts to find this holy mountain, Xu Fu, from the Chinese dynasty Qin famous for the emperor Qin Shi Huang, was ordered to "go to Hourai and find the miracle drug of immortal life". He ventured forth on a boat, taking vast amounts of riches and several thousand men and women with him, no one heard from them afterwards. If we trace back from modern times, it was more than 2200 years ago.
Where was Hourai, the land Xu Fu and the rest were searching for? Some people theorize that Japan was that place. There have even been stories of Xu Fu arriving at Japan, mainly on Kyushu shores, it's also said that they traced a sea route to have arrived in Japan. Japan was hailed as the Country of Longevity in the "Tale of the Bamboo Cutter". Perhaps, the place Xu Fu was aiming for really was Japan after all?
Shambhala
Along with Hourai back there, Shambhala is also known as a fantasy land. Unlike Hourai, which exists in the eastern seas of China, Shambhala is said to be amongst or under the mythological Kunlun Mountains in central Asia. The name is Sanskrit for "That which nurtures happiness". It is said that the first time the word Shambhala showed up in history was in scriptures from the ancient religion Bon, compiled in the 1st century.
The reason the word Shambhala escaped from Tibet was the Russian Orthodox Church missionary Father Sergius in the 10th century, it showed up in a journal of his trip to Tibet. According to the journal, Shambhala only accepts 7 people into the country every century, 6 out of them are to master the secrets of Shambhala only to return to the mortal realm, while one of them would be chosen to remain immortal in Shambhala.
There had been no reports of belief in Shambhala since Sergius's journal, not until the mysterious Count of St. Germain brought it to public attention again, who stirred up the 18th century French Palace. The strange man who claimed to have "lived for four thousand years", knows many languages and is excellent in medicine and science told his friend that "I'll be hiding away in the Himalayas now" and disappeared. People thought that this may be Shambhala.
Next in the 19th century, the founder of the Theosophical Society, Madame Helena Blavatsky and supernatural philosopher George Gurdjieff mentioned Shambhala in their works and spread its name across the world. The grand land that sleeps beneath central Asia, Shambhala. As for the mystically named Gensokyo, how and where should we view it from?

Does it actually exist!? Gensokyo

Iwate Prefecture・Tono City

Nowadays people acknowledge both Hourai and Shambhala as imaginary places, but places with strong legends regarding youkai are also called fantasy lands. So here I'll introduce Tono city, Iwate Prefecture, one of these lands.
The folklorist who travelled all around between the Meiji Era and the Showa Era, Kunio Yanagita's representative work "The Legends of Tono" compiled folklores from Tono passed down by mouth, and is a book that had a great influence on modern folklore studies. Several words from this book, like "Dendera Fields"[2], would be familiar to fans of "Touhou". There is historical proof of them existing from the people living there. There has been a legend of zashiki-warashi appearing in an inn in Tono. They're still here in Gensokyo――
