Notes

  1. Meek: could refer to the name of a knife made by MOKI (a Japanese knife maker), as well as the behavior of an "obedient" maid like Sakuya.
  2. The Star of David is a six pointed star (hexagram) and the most popular symbol of Judaism. In Touhou (and in Japanese media in general), a six pointed star is most commonly associated with magic circles. The Star of David has its origin in the The Seal of Solomon, an identical symbol that supposedly allows for one to ward off or control demons. Popular mythology dictates that King Solomon controlled armies of demons (see: lunatic version of this spell card, "Young Demon Lord").
  3. Hexagrams are known as kagome (籠目 lit. "basket eye") in Japan, where they're found around Shinto shrines. kagome kagome (かごめかごめ), a popular traditional Japanese song and children's game, involves several children singing the titular song anf linking arms in a circle around a blindfolded child (referred to as an oni). When the song is finished, the oni has to guess the name of the person behind them. The most common theory as to what "kagome" (かごめ) refers to is that it refers to 籠目 (kagome, "basket eye"), with the children interlocking arms around another blindfolded child being symbolic of a basket trapping an oni. Vampire in Japanese (吸血鬼) contains the kanji for oni and, as a result, vampires in Touhou often have oni-like qualities (Remilia is weak to the roasted soy beans thrown during Patchouli's annual Setsubun and vampires are said to have oni-like strength). Remilia later has a spell card in Impossible Spell Card named "Onigakko" (「鬼ごっこ」), a reference to a tag-like game in which children run away from the oni (the person who is "it"). Flandre also has a spell card (Taboo "Kagome, Kagome") that references kagome kagome. Said spell card uses green danmaku in a basket-like pattern to trap you.
  4. 冥界 (Meikai lit. "Dark World") refers to a whole spectrum of underworlds from the Shinto Yomi to the Buddhist [Jigoku]. Vampires in Touhou are considered to be devils, connecting them to the concept of hell (see: lunatic version of this spell card, Hell Sign "Mountain of a Thousand Needles"). Meikai is also used as a synonym for [Higan], the world between that of the living and that of the dead. Vampires, being undead, could be considered to be in a state between living and dead. Touhou's own Netherworld, introduced later in Perfect Cherry Blossom, is not based on any particular mythology and is likely not being referenced here.
  5. Vlad Ţepeș Dracula: a Romanian prince and inspiration to the fictional vampire, Dracula.
  6. The stage 6 theme is titled "The Young Descendant of Tepes" and Remilia herself claims descent from Vlad Tepes. ZUN has stated that she's probably lying, however.
  7. The spell card's name could be a reference to the English name of Akumajou Densetsu, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (which, in Japanese, would be rendered "ドラキュラの呪い").
  8. Possible pun. シュート (shuto) is pronounced the same as 酒徒 (shuto, "drinking buddies").
  9. A reference to the Red Magic (赤い魔法) OS from the novel Everything Becomes F: The Perfect Insider. For more info see Sakuya's spell cards.
  10. Vampires are powerful devils that have the ability to summon other devils on command. Remilia is the mistress (lord) of the Scarlet Devil Mansion.
  11. A reference to the 針山地獄 (Hariyama Jigoku lit. "Needle Mountain Hell"), one of the many Buddhist Hells. Liars are perpetually impaled on sharp spikes in this hell.
  12. Vlad Tepes was known to have been exceedingly cruel, killing many of his political and religious enemies without mercy. His favorite method of execution was impalement, earning him the title "Vlad the Impaler".
  13. 吸血鬼幻想: a reference to Suehiro Tanemura's book of the same name.
  14. Meister: German for "master".
  15. The incident that kicked off Embodiment of Scarlet Devil was caused by Remilia spreading scarlet mist throughout the skies of Gensokyo, blotting out the sun
