Fan-made Virtual Autography/Characters

From Touhou Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Most of the characters in "Fan-made Virtual Autography" are original and non-existent in the "Touhou Project". The following three are, however, officially part of the "Touhou Project" and are playable characters in "Fan-made Virtual Autography."

All other characters, besides the Stage 3 boss, are original.

Shrine Maiden of Paradise

Reimu Hakurei
Playable Character

Species: Human

Ability: Capable of flying, etc.

One of the good old faces from the official games.
The shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine.
She's currently gathering faith and donations by exterminating youkai. As a shrine maiden, she also can call upon gods into the mortal realm.

She's also the manager of the Great Hakurei Barrier, the boundary that separates Gensokyo and the Outside World.
It's also recognized as the boundary between normality and abnormality, meaning that what is considered "normal" in Gensokyo is "abnormal" in the Outside World and vice versa.
As the person who's maintaining this barrier, she, of course, has extraordinary abilities that will blow away any common sense.

She felt that the Map Orb Incident was yet another propaganda campaign crafted by a youkai, and went to resolve it as usual.
But to be honest, she did believe that there's some possibility that this "Map Orb Game" might've been a good source of traffic for her shrine. She also liked the red-white color scheme of the Map Orbs, and felt whoever designed them had good taste.

Ordinary Magician

Marisa Kirisame
Playable Character

Species: Human

Ability: Capable of using magic

One of the good old faces from the official games.
The magician who lives in the Forest of Magic.
She's got a collector's spirit, and will do anything you ask. A hard-working girl.

Thanks to the "Map Orb Game," she had way more people visiting her little shop. However, most of them only came in asking her to escort them out, which was honestly kind of irritating to her.

And there's no way to opt-out of this game!
But since she can turn fairies into toys, and can save them for collection purposes, she felt more entertained than anything.

Yep, nobody in Gensokyo is gonna rival Marisa's enthusiasm when it comes to game studies.
She wanted to meet the mastermind so she could ask them about their design stories, like how they came up with such a brilliant idea, and save them as a reference.

Dreamful Visitor

Sumireko Usami
Playable Character

Species: High school girl

Ability: Capable of manipulating psychic powers

One of the good old faces of the official games.
Unlike the others, she's living in the Outside World, not in Gensokyo. A high school student with psychic abilities. President of an occult club (with a total membership of 1, including herself).
She has a special trait that allows her to transport herself into Gensokyo while sleeping, just like seeing a dream.

"Map Orb Game," a game where everyone messes with balls. Before this, Sumireko had experienced a very similar incident to this one.
And it perfectly fits the definition of "location-based games" in the Outside World.
She knew it -- she knew that bringing such trendy things to Gensokyo was an easy way to crack a hole in the Great Hakurei Barrier.

She can't stop wondering -- did she have comrades in Japan that shared the same ideas as her? Were they even real?
If so, she wanted to show them that she's the only outsider who's worthy of Gensokyo!

Mimi Kuroudo (蔵人 未見) is the Stage 1 midboss and boss, as well as the Extra Stage midboss.

Name

Her full name is Kuroudo Mimi "Kuroudo (蔵人)" refers to a keeper of archives and literally means "storehouse person", while "Mimi (未見)" translates as "not yet seen". Her full name comes down to mean "A not-yet-seen archive keeper"

Mimi appears small in stature. She has dark brown hair, cut into straight bangs with two side locks being tied with red ribbons and dark golden eyes. She wears a white hooded garment with puffy sleeves and golden strings, underneath which she has a peach-colored kimono, a white obi with a black obiage and a blue skirt with circular/floral pattern. She has a bell wrapped around her neck and wears white socks that extend to the middle of her lower leg. She rides on a wooden platform trolley and wears a wooden piece (looks like a building, probably a library) on her back, like a backpack

An original character from this fangame.

A tsukumogami based on old Fuguruma (Cart of literature, a cart specifically used to store books).
Thanks to the stacking emotions generated by abandoned piles of books inside the Fuguruma, it has become a perfect breeding ground for tsukumogami like her to spawn.
Afraid of its youkai-attracting nature, the popularity of Fuguruma has dropped in recent years.

In the past, when she was still living in the Human Village, she got a job manipulating reviews on tsukumogami's social network.
She used that experience to transcribe trends taking place among the youkai, even after she left the village.
As someone whose birth was a result of people not reading, it's very complicated to her that letting people read the words is her true calling.

Even now, she's busy working as a game journalist, helping players of the Map Orb Game understand the basic rules.

Appearance

Shounen has very long, dark purple hair with two side-locks that reach to her shoulders and dark red eyes. Her hair is tied with a white ribbon at the end, and her outfit mimics that of Byakuren Hijiri, with the white shorter undergarment (in Shounen's case - a yukata tied with a ribbon) and a longer black undergarment tied with black ribbon, puffy sleeves and white ribbons wrapping around her arms. She wears a straw hat with a hand-written hiragana う (Uu). She also wears long white socks.

An original character from this fangame.

An eel youkai dwelling in Genbu Ravine.

As eels are going extinct recently, the number of eels has dramatically increased in Gensokyo, making them easier to catch.
As a result, humans in Gensokyo also started overfishing.
She dressed like a powerful monk, ambushing those relentless fishermen who dared to cross the line.

But she wasn't interested in Buddhism in any way.
She simply found the monks' "one-shall-not-kill" stereotype convenient enough to fit her agenda.

Also, as a countermeasure to high eel demand in summer (it's believed in Japan that eel is a food remedy for summer fatigue), she's been pushing yakitori to be the new trending food.
Since she's very good at imposing, she often shows up at food carts without any troubles.

Although she just wanted to enjoy the game this time, the humans she encountered were, unfortunately, the most powerful ones this world can offer.

See official article.

Appearance

In Fan-made Virtual Autography, Yukari has an original design that draws inspiration from many of her previous designs. The general look of her outfit looks similar to her usual appearance with a white, four-layered frilled dress and a purple Chinese-style tabard with black edges and black trigrams (which were explained in her official article).

Main difference from her usual design is that her outer-most layer of the dress is purple (sort of reminiscent of her PCB design) with a white gradient towards the bottom. Her hairstyle is also different - Instead of her usual long hair tied with ribbons, or a bun, she has her hair shoulder-long, with a lock to her left being tied into a short braid with a red bow at the end. She holds her signature parasol and has her gap portal open and gazing behind her

One of the good old faces from the official games.

One of the youkai sages who played an essential role in the creation of Gensokyo.

She manages one of Gensokyo's boundaries, the "boundary of concrete and abstract".
By the effect of this boundary, Gensokyo is defined as "a space that's both real and unreal".
She often instructs Reimu as she is the sole guardian that protects one side of this boundary, namely the Great Hakurei Barrier.

This time, she received reports from her pets that Map Orbs were interacting with the barrier, and she decided to visit the creator. However, nothing noteworthy had happened since then.
And, beyond her expectations, humans who were supposed to deal with youkai were all joining the game instead.
To deal with this situation, Yukari played her usual, suspicious villain cover, and set after the humans.

The day of reckoning will come, for those who created this endless battle and manipulated the boundary of games.

Sasuta no Izuhime (刺田 厳姫) is the Stage 4 boss and midboss.

Concept

Name

Her full name is Saruta no Izuhime "Saru (刺)" can also refer to "biting words". "Izuhime (厳姫)" means "Strict Princess", which is a trait reflected in her character design. "no (の)" is an archaic particle, showing that someone is of high status. It can be translated as "Izuhime of the Saruta clan"

Appearance

Izuhime has long black hair, tied with a blue ribbon into a ponytail and brown eyes. She wears a black visor with a red compass pin. Her outfit resembles that of a Japanese shrine maiden with a white kimono and a red skirt. She has long detached sleeves which are tied around her arm with a red ribbon. End of the sleeves is ornated with red ribbon and black frills. Her red skirt is ornated with a white pattern of triangles and spirals and a golden tassel and a clover-leaf knot around her waist. She has black socks that go over her knees, geta sandals and brown leather gloves, which allow for crows to sit on her arms. On her left hand sits Yatagarasu and in her right hand she holds what looks like a gohei, but upon closer inspection is probably a police baton with shide being made to look like compass needles.

One of the original characters from this fangame.

An ordinary divine spirit who's living in the shrine from the Outside World.
She's a shrine maiden who served from ancient times and eventually became a God, who specializes in purification rituals based on wordplay.

She can also summon hordes of Yatagarasu under her commands,
as she was the first human being who tamed Yatagarasu as a way to harvest the power of the Sun.
And this time, she also infused Yatagarasu's power into the Map Orbs.

Despite living in the Outside World, she is one of Gensokyo's co-managers.
Her job is mostly deploying her Yatagarasu army to patrol the outer ring of the barrier, examining anyone who dared to get close.
She also patrols the area herself sometimes.

As she is the ancient ancestor of Kazuha, she received faith from Mariko and supported Mariko's research.
After Kazuha's rebirth, Mariko accepted her suggestions on the incident, creating Map Orbs and roads that allowed the Map Orbs to reveal directions.

Supposedly, it shouldn't be possible for her to interfere with Gensokyo inside, but she still proceeded anyway. There's a reason for that.
Kazuha's plan was merely impossible to execute, not even in theories.
Even though her powers could only assist them on a surface level, she supported them with all she could have done, just because she saw how enthusiastic they were about their plan..
As she expected, Yukari showed up in the city, and they came to understand the fact that their plan was simply a failure.

However, it was intriguing to her that Yukari left them behind and turned around pursuing mobs that were only putting Map Orbs in their places.

What exactly is this "Map Orb Game"?
The truth remains concealed from Izuhime's eyes.

Music Themes

Fanatic Monograph

Mariko Sengakuji (仙覚寺 鞠子) is the Stage 5 boss and midboss, as well as the stage 6 midboss.

Concept

Origin

Mariko appears to be inspired by Senkagu. Sengaku was a Buddhist monk who wrote the Manyoushuu Chushaku, which was a literary analysis of Manyoushuu. Mariko, just like her namesake, interprets, analyses, and annotates Manyoushuu and waka poetry in general

Name

Her full name is Sengakujii Mariko "Mariko (鞠子)" consists of kanji meaning "Ball" and "Child". Name might be from the twentieth of the fifty-three station of Toukaidou in current day Shizuoka. "Sengakujii (仙覚寺)" sounds identical to a temple located in Tokyo, but the kanji are different. In this case, it means "Sengaku Temple" and literally translates to "Temple of an Awake Hermit". 覚 also appears in the game's japanese title - 東方醒珠.

Appearance

Mariko has long, straight, pale green hair with red tips and dark red eyes. Her hair is cut into straight bangs and is split in the middle. Her outfit feels very old-timey - she wears a black frilly mob cap with an orb ornament as its centerpiece. She has a black jacket with long puffy sleeves underneath which she wears a black dress. The jacket has white frills at the ends of the sleeves, at its bottom and around the neck. It seems to be fastened with a white string. Her sleeves and her cap seem to have a floral pattern. Her dress has a crossing pattern of white fabric, creating a rhombus-shaped pattern. Within each of these she has a smaller dotted line rhombus pattern with white pompoms in the middle. She holds a wooden cross-shaped pencil

One of the original characters in this fangame.
A ghost from the Minamoto family of the Kamakura period.

She stayed within Kerria City, studying and deciphering Waka collections.
Although she considers herself as a researcher, her interpretations are rather unique, as she often weighs her thoughts on the piece over anything.

Different from usual ghosts, she never attracts livings into the world of death.
Instead, she drags them into a world of obsession.
She's able to annotate on events, altering them based on how she interpreted them.

While she was alive, she was grievous about the downfall of the Minamoto clan and the misery that awaited her.
No one doubted that the Shogunate bloodline would live long and prosper after their glorious victory in the Genpei War. Yet, the family fell while she was the last descendant.
And that's not even the worst -- her mother's side of the family was almost completely wiped out due to political assassinations.
Mariko, a woman who had once stood with the highest political power, was eventually a victim of political conflicts. With such an ironic death, there were enough reasons for her to become a ghost by her own will.

By the nature of such causes, her resolution was never about hating or killing.
One man, a scholar, had survived the genocide of her mother's side.
"I want for him to have a happy life, at least", that was Mariko's last wish.
For if he were to ever be trapped in hatred like she was, the tragic slaughters would surely be repeated...

...But it turned out those worries were unnecessary. This man was too much of a nutjob to be worried about.

He spent his life studying up on a legendary poet who summarized an entire life's worth of Waka into a single collection.
He analyzed their poems every day, every night, trying to summon their divine spirit back into this mortal world.

His burning enthusiasm eventually convinced Mariko to join his research.
She even brought along the other rebels who supported her, including her husband from when she was alive, to provide maximum support for the man's research.

But this Waka research was still too much even for a determined man like him to accomplish within his lifetime.
As a result of his influences, she absorbed part of his regrets. She treated annotating as the resolution that defined her, devoting her afterlife to interpreting Waka.

Those in the living world never knew Mariko and her companions' last wishes.
No one listened to their reminiscences. Those unsung stories echoed over and over again in the chamber formed by her Waka collection, eventually created her own fantasy world, Kerria City.

A few hundred years later, she finally finished documenting the life of the legendary poet, Ootomo no Kazuha.
But, not surprisingly, Mariko added her annotations to the original Waka collection almost everywhere, to the point that's it's unreadable to anyone else.

Otomo no Kazuha (大伴 家珠葉) is the Stage 6 boss.

Concept

Origin

Kazuha is based on Ōtomo no Yakamochi. He was one of the Thirty-Six Poetry Immortals and is believed to be the last person to compile waka poems for Man'yōshū

Name

Her full name is Otomo no Kazuha "Otomo (大伴)" is taken directly from Otomo no Yakamochi's name and means "Great Companion". "Kazuha (家珠葉)" is a common male japanese name and here it consists of kanji meaning "lineage/family" "pearl" and "leaf". 珠 appears in the game's japanese title (東方覚醒). Kazuha can also be written as "万葉", being an alternative pronunciation of Man'you - meaning "Ten Thousand Leaves". "no (の)" is an archaic particle, showing that someone is of high status. It can be translated as "Kazuha of the Otomo clan"

Appearance

Kazuha has short black hair with one longer lock being tied into a side ponytail, ornated with a yellow flower and peach-pink eyes. She seems to wear a white Junihitoe with the two outermost layers being a golden yellow kimono and a brown kosode with a floral pattern. Her innermost kimono seems to have a pattern consisting of many kanji, some more discernable than others. She wears a golden obi to which she has tied a sword in a black sheath. In her right hand she holds a quill and her left hand has letters coming out of it.

Her entire design reeks of Heian-era noble class - Junihitoe was commonly worn by high-ranking noblewomen. Katana were also commonly owned by the high-class.

Her design also makes her look like a book - her outermost layers resembles a brown cover with golden edges and the white junihitoe looks like the pages.

One of the original characters from this fangame.

An amalgamation formed by an ancient poet's spirit and their Waka collection.
As she possesses a form of poems, she's able to record and manipulate landscapes and memories by writing on herself.

She's a lady of ambitions who is devoted to saving humankind, but she was a completely different person compared to who she is now.
All thanks to the authors who wrote songs after her and Mariko's relentless editing and commenting.

Map Orb is a kind of device that was made to transfer what its owner had envisioned, including their emotions and imaginations drawn by such vision, to Kazuha.
To her, this kind of information is precisely the Waka ought to be collected.
If she can guide everyone who had Map Orb to the famous spots around Gensokyo, it would be only a matter of time for her to possess a replica of the entire landscape of Gensokyo.

But she's not just going for a replica.
Landscapes in Gensokyo have a unique attribute -- although they are lost phantasms that no longer physically exist, they do have a real form that occupies actual physical space at the same time.
Duality such as this has always been the philosophy of Gensokyo.
In other words, whenever a phantom is spawned, its corresponding physical space will also be generated at the same time.

This is Kazuha's real objective.

Gensokyo, a land that exists deep in the Japanese mountains, but also a land that never existed.
The boundary that can be crossed from anywhere outside but also reaching anywhere inside.
Her goal is to borrow this special attribute and utilize it in the outside world.

... and all she wants to do with such incredible power is to help humans travel to lands far from their own homes.
To save the humans who longed to meet their loved ones, yet were unable to due to long distances. This was her sole purpose as a book, the sole purpose that was weaved by the authors.

Her whole life, Kazuha had been filled with love poems that expressed the yearning from people who loved each other from a long distance, along with
Azumauta and Sakimoriuta that sang about soldiers who lived at the border who were unable to meet their loved ones within the glorious capital.
She recorded countless songs like those -- those that express people's will to visit their loved ones regardless of distance -- as a part of her existence.

The mystery behind the "spiriting away" phenomenon (teleportation, in other words) was about to be solved.
The incident she's causing before she even had a step in Gensokyo was more of an incident targeting the outside world.

Eventually, Kazuha failed all her attempts.
Despite her efforts as a legendary poet who successfully humanized nature into fictional girls while singing about their stories, reality did not tolerate such fantasies.

However, humans nowadays are no longer as helpless as the ones who lived in Kazuha's era.
Humans have invented traffic systems, postal services, information technologies, challenging the same distance problem non-stop ever since then.
Maybe in a different way than Kazuha's, the moral of Waka collection will pass on, giving humans who live in outside world the bravery to fight against distance.

Concept

Concept

Mėmė is based on three core things - a Go board, video games and Mokumokuren. Mokumokuren (目目連 literally meaning "Countless eyes") is a youkai that appears as eyes in broken shoji walls, which is reflected in the Map Orbs being her eyes and her spell cards. Her video game influence is reflected in her wearing a VR Headset and being the creator of the incident

Name

Her full name is Nokiba Mémé (軒端 目々). "Mémé(目々)" means "Eyes" and is an alternative of Mokumoku (taken from Mokumokuren). Her name being written as Mémé is a stylistic choice to attempt preventing people from mispronouncing it as the English word. "Nokiba (軒端)" means "edge of the eaves"

Appearance

Mémé has short dull brown hair with white strands. She has locks of her tied with red ribbons into twin tails with buns. She wears a VR Headset which covers her eyes. When she removes it, it's revealed she has heterochromia - her left eye being red and the right one being white. She wears a long yukata tied with a belt (probably not an obi). Yukata has a grid pattern and is half-red, half-white. Tomoeri of her yukata is a dull brown color with a repeating pattern of "X" and "O"s, which is probably a reference to Tic-Tac-Toe - another game played on a grid. At the ends of her sleeves and the bottom of her yukata, she has a pattern consisting of black rhombuses. Her gray belt has a white screen that displays her emotions, probably for ease of communication when her eyes are obstructed. The belt also has two gray semi-sphered from which protrude purple wires that connect to the cup-shaped controllers she's holding. One has white Go pieces and the other has red ones. She walks barefoot

One of the original characters in this fangame.

A Tsukumogami spawned from an antique Go board that had interesting stories attached to it.

She possesses countless eyeballs spawned from Go stones, and she can set those eyeballs freely on any places that match a Go board pattern.
Once she stands on a Go board, she can grow in power indefinitely and extend the board as much as she can. This is the kind of youkai she is.

It may sound like a strong ability in theory, but in practice, Go board-esque objects are rather rare in human environments.
The most common ones are only a few palisades and houses that have checker-like walls.
Therefore, there are no real places for her to grow, and all she could realistically achieve is just surprising humans with pranks.

A few moments ago, she was visited by a divine spirit named Izuhime,
and she requested her to set her eyeballs around Gensokyo,
transferring the vision of Gensokyo's various landscapes and emotions grown from the ones who witnessed them, to a Go board known as Kerria City.

Since they promised her such immense power that would allow her to deploy eyeballs on a scale that she could've never imagined, she accepted their terms without a second thought.
And this is the origin of the "Map Orb."
The item that is combined by Mokumokuren's eyeballs and Yatagarasu's eyeballs which possess the power of guidance.

Mokumokuren is the kind of youkai that doesn't mean any harm. Izuhime knows the fact as well that unless it's by God's will, there shouldn't be any reasons for Mokumokuren to attack humans.
Izuhime and her crew were simply expecting random kind people to pick up the Map Orbs, so all they did was wait for their songs to be transferred to them.

But Izuhime and her companies overlooked Meme's true intention when she suggested the Go board design.

The objective of a Go game is to occupy more spaces. So for her to define this large area as a Go board, all she needs to do is to create a situation where it's like a real Go game is being played.
That is to say, she wanted to transform Gensokyo into a dichromatic Tom Tiddler's Ground.

Mémé quickly mapped out the rules for the "Map Orb Game."
To meet the Izuhime alliance's expectations, she made the rules in a way that can attract as many people as possible and spread them as far as they can be.

With Mimi's assistance, the game gradually became a social phenomenon.
And the Izuhime alliance, though doubting Meme's mysterious methods on how she can put this many people into work, were extremely pleased by the result of the huge Waka collection transferred from Map Orbs.

Set more eyeballs, create more competitions. This is what ought to be done.
To surprise people with the fun that she created on the Go board known as "Gensokyo". This is all she wanted.
