This (unnamed) giant catfish is a villainous avatar of Taisui Xingjun, a God of Calamity who sent assassins (disguised as familiar characters) to attack Hong Meiling. His objective, as he claims, was to drain her of her power so that he could move the earth and return to this world once again. He also spoke quite strongly of his plans to cause various disasters to Gensokyo. Twilight Frontier has left no official comment about this character.

Concept

According to NKZ's comment in the Nae Raji (radio broadcasting by D.N.A. Softwares) on September 21. 2009., the inspiration of the giant catfish is the Golden Statue of Catfish at Yoshikawa City in Saitama Prefecture, where is NKZ's hometown. [2] [Ref. Needed]

While namazu means all catfish in general, it is likely based on Silurus asotus commonly known as either namazu or chinese catfish.[3]

Name

This character has been referred to as "The Great Catfish" in canon, but it doesn't mean it's this catfishes official name. The graphics files for this character are named "namazu" in the Touhou Hisoutensoku application directory, so this is assumed to be his species.

Appearance

The sprite of the catfish in Touhou Hisoutensoku shows that it has glossy, yellowish-brown flesh, bulbous eyes, single protruding dorsal fin, and whiskers.

Additional Information

Trivia

  • Perfect Memento in Strict Sense mentions that carp-like monster fish up to ten fathoms in length have been seen in the Misty Lake where the Scarlet Devil Mansion is located. This may be the kind of fish Sakuya caught at the end of SWR.
  • Some of the attacks of the catfish are a reference to the attacks of Fatty Whale from Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra.
  • The catfish is the only character who appears as a boss in a fighting spin-off, but is not a playable character.
  • He is the only character in Touhou Hisoutensoku whose face is not visible in his HUD potriat.

Fanon

  • Most Japanese fans call him (or possibly her?) "Oo Namazu sama" (大ナマズ様, Master Big Catfish), as s/he did it in the dialogue of Meiling's Scenario of Touhou Hisoutensoku.
  • The giant catfish has been nicknamed "Primeus" by some western fans. This is due to some similarities between the catfish and a MUGEN joke character named Primeus, who was a giant floating salmon who shot laser beams. Said MUGEN character has since been modified so he sometimes uses the giant catfish's sprites during his introduction to battle.
    • Some people find it funnier because of the fact he was first created as a prank character called "SSB?? Yukari???". (Question marks intended)
  • "Giant catfish" has been a recurring joke or theme in the English Touhou community since Scarlet Weather Rhapsody when Reimu seemingly brought up the subject out of nowhere (no such associations between catfish and earthquakes are commonly known outside of Japan), and when Sakuya caught one for a banquet.
  • Sometimes in fanart, the catfish and Taisui Xingjun are depicted as the same thing, which can cause confusion to other fans.
