Most of the characters in Glory of Deep Skies are original and non-existent in the Touhou Project. The following two are, however, officially part of the Touhou Project and are playable characters in Glory of Deep Skies, each with two different shot types. All other characters are original.

Reimu Hakurei
Shrine Maiden of the Blazing Sun

Reimu Hakurei
Playable Character

Species: Human

Ability: Capable of flying

The now familiar shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine.

Ever since the four seasons incident, she has been kind of paranoid about any small changes for a while. However, as usual, she had just completely forgotten about it not too long after and let her guard down.

She saw a light beam coming from the ground one autumn evening, but she had just shrugged it off as if it was nothing.

It was until that the sky started becoming strange and more mysterious incidents occurred that she put two and two together.

It didn't take her long after that before she went out in hope that it is not too late yet. After all, she is Gensokyo's Incident Resolver specialist.

Marisa Kirisame
Magician of the Serene Moon

Marisa Kirisame
Playable Character

Species: Human

Ability: Capable of using magic

An ordinary magician living in Gensokyo. She also has a mania for collecting things.

Lately she has noticed that her power has been acting strange. She can occasionally light things on fire with just a tiny spark from her mini-Hakkero. At first she thought that it was a side effect from the Tsukumogami incident few years back, but the same things also happened with her other magics.

Not only that, but even a simple danmaku bullet was capable of inflicting physical damage upon her belongings. She knew something was up, and at the same time, the sky was also filled with unusual lights. This made her curious.

So she decided to go on an investigation in hopes of finding what happened in Gensokyo. After all, her combat style is all about power; with this huge magical boost, it shouldn't be too hard.

Her inclusion as a midboss here was partly inspired by the fangame White Names Spoiled Past, which features many characters created by its author as pre-release predictions for official Touhou games, as well as a 3-stage structure similar to Glory of Deep Skies.

Dreamquest of the Forsaken Gods

Mitsuru Narukami (鳴上 光) is one of the stage 3 bosses, who is fought if the player chose the Wood Elemental Burst. She reappears as the stage 4 midboss.

Concept[edit]

Mitsuru is based on Nyarlathotep, a malicious god who appears in many Cthulhu Mythos stories, and draws most notably from his role in "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath". Glory of Deep Skies largely mirrors the story of Dream-Quest; protagonist Randolph Carter reaches the onyx castle of "Kadath" after adventuring through the Dreamlands, where Nyarlathotep tells him that the Earth's gods have abandoned Kadath in favor of the "marvelous city" of Carter's childhood dreams, and instructs him to retrieve them. (In Dream-Quest, however, this ultimately turns out to be a lie.)

She is also based on various thunder and wind gods from mythologies around the world, most notably Set, as well as the presence of thunder and gods thereof in some Chinese hundun myths.

Name

Her first name, "Mitsuru", is written with a common kanji meaning "light". Her surname "Narukami" is one of several words for the sound of lightning, and is written with kanji meaning "cry" and "above".
