Haniwa (埴輪) are Japanese clay figures made of Terrakotta, often found in burial mounds from the Kofun period from the 3rd to the 6th century. They usually depict military figures, but mikos, animals, and even houses are also known. Like many ancient works of art, they were originally painted, but paints do not keep well.

They were probably placed as guards in front of tombs, but there are also theories that they were supposed to be vessels for the souls of the deceased.

Haniwa in Touhou

Mayumi Joutouguu is the only Haniwa known by name in Touhou. She was pottered by Keiki Haniyasushin and brought to life, but not as a burial gift, but for her takeover as well as guardian of the primate garden in hell.
