Notes
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 1.5 1.6 1.7 The prefixes of Satono's cards are homophones: ginger (茗荷 myoga) and divine protection (冥加 myoga).
- ↑ A Japanese superstition is that eating ginger will make you more forgetful. The kanji in the plant's name are "茗" (lit. 'tea', but resembling the kanji for 'name') and "荷" ('luggage'); according to the Japanese Wikipedia article on ginger, this originates from a story of how the Buddha's slow-witted servant Cudapanthaka carried a plate with his own name on it in order to remember it, and of how ginger grew from his remains when he died.
- ↑ 3.0 3.1 3.2 3.3 Both take (竹) and sasa (笹) mean 'bamboo'; sasa is often used to refer to the broad-leafed variety of bamboo associated with Tanabata.
- ↑ 4.0 4.1 Tengu-odoshi (天狗怖し, lit. 'tengu frightening') refers to a ritual performed at Enryaku-ji, during a grand sutra recital at the end of summer. While priests recited sutras properly at the front of the temple, others would loudly dance, leap and recite at random at temple's rear door where Matara-jin was worshiped, to beseech Matara-jin to drive away tengu.
