Notes[edit]

  1. A wordplay on "浮世は牛の小車" (literally "The floating world is a small ox cart"), which is a Japanese proverb used to describe human's short, bitter and colorful lifespan. The proverb itself is a wordplay on the word melancholy 憂し and the character for ox 牛, both pronounced ushi here.
  2. Kagura (神楽, かぐら, "god-entertainment") is a Japanese word referring to a specific type of Shinto theatrical dance, with roots arguably predating those of Noh.
  3. The word monkey refers to sarugaku (猿楽, "monkey entertainment"), a precursor to Noh.
  4. A wordplay on "杞人天を憂う" ("the man of Qi worries about the sky"), which is a (Chinese and) Japanese proverb used to describe groundless fears. Qi was once a minor state in ancient China. In a parable from Liezi, one man in Qi was said to have worried about the sky falling. The proverb is usually abbreviated into "杞憂" (Qi's worries).
  5. Forbidden Scrollery chapters 10-11 revealed the origin of this title.
