Notes

  1. Kawarake throwing: the practice of throwing unglazed earthware plates from a high place to ward off evil.
  2. Rotary throw: an aikido technique where the thrower sweeps the receiver's arm back until the shoulder joint locks, then pushes forward to throw them.
  3. In Feng Shui, there is a concept called "竜管貴賤" (The dragon monitors royalty and poverty), where landforms such as mountain ridges can be classified as a "Royal Dragon" (貴竜) or a "Poverty Dragon" (賤竜). A Royal Dragon landform gives prosperity to the people living in it.
  4. Rivers, roads or other 'currents' in feng shui are said to carry wealth along with them. An area surrounded or 'embraced' by a bend in a current will accumulate wealth, while areas on the outside of a bend will lose it.
  5. A legendary flying boat from Japanese mythology.
  6. A homophone of 六壬神課 (Liuren Shenke), which refers to one of the three great divinations practiced in Feng Shui. The other two are 奇門遁甲 (Qimen Dunjia) and 太乙神數 (Taiyi Shenshu). :
  7. The 'Standing Plate' (立向盤, Li Xiang Pan) and 'Sitting Mountain Plate' (坐山盤, Zuo Shan Pan) are used in Qi Meng Dun Jia divination.
  8. "合局" refers to combinations of the Earthly Branches in divination.
  9. "Miwa" (三輪, 'three rings') is the name of a sacred mountain in Japan, as well as the famous Omiwa Shrine (大神神社), which is known as Japan's prototypical Shinto shrine. The name of Futo's theme song also makes reference to the Omiwa Shrine.
  10. Taiyi (太乙) refers to the ancient Chinese divination method Taiyi Shenshu (simplified Chinese: 太乙神教; traditional Chinese: 太乙神數). True Fire (真火) refers to the fire of life that burns in the hearts of everyone, according to Taoist physiology. Also a visual pun with 太乙真人 (Taiyi Zhenren), a character in the Chinese novel Fengshen Yanyi
  11. A homophone of "大化の改新" ("Taika Reformation").
