This is one of Alice Margatroid's dolls. She's theoretically more powerful than Shanghai due to Shanghai being used by Alice while playing on the hard difficulty setting and Hourai being used while playing on lunatic. Hourai appears in Alice's spell card Curse "Hanged Hourai Dolls" (spell card 044 of Perfect Cherry Blossom).

In Immaterial and Missing Power Hourai was one of Alice's 2nd level spell cards. She had the exact same sprite and effect as Shanghai (the 1st level spell card of the same type), only much stronger.

Fun Facts

  • Hourai is a legendary island paradise in East Asian folklore, which was said to be inhabited by immortals who had special powers, and possessed rare treasures as well as the elixir of immortality.
  • Due to the name of her spell card, "Hanged Hourai Dolls," Hourai is often portrayed in fan comics hanging herself for various reasons.
  • While official sprites indicate that Hourai's appearance is identical to that of Shanghai, fan comics tend to differentiate it, frequently by giving her a bonnet instead of a hair ribbon, and/or by giving her an elegant red dress instead of the maid outfit worn by Shanghai.
  • Even though she has no official profile and has only made two appearances during gameplay (and even then only as a spell card that's not often seen by most players), she's somehow become a very well known character.
  • She so far has no known relation to either the Hourai Elixir or Kaguya Houraisan. It is most likely a reference to the aforementioned island paradise of Hourai, since Alice's other spell cards (such as Foggy London Dolls or Red-haired Dutch Dolls) are references to countries or cities.
  • As with Shanghai, Hourai is possibly a class of doll rather than a name for one individual doll, and multiple Hourai dolls are seen during its spell card in PCB.
  • 蓬莱, the kanji for Hourai, is another name in Japanese for Taiwan, Penglai. Meaning both of Alice's dolls are named after Chinese locations, Shanghai and Penglai.
