Kyouko Kasodani (幽谷 響子 Kasodani Kyouko) is a youkai that embodies mountain echoes and is able to reflect sound waves. She appears to be a recent newcomer to Myouren Temple, though no reference is made to the characters already living there; with mountain echoes no longer being seen as strange, she decided to enter the Buddhist discipline. She seems to be responsible for cleaning duties and confronting trespassers, such as the player in stage 2 of Ten Desires.

Concept

Name

She is known as Kyouko Kasodani (幽谷 響子). The characters for Kasodani (幽谷) literally mean "Ghost Valley", and Kyouko (響子) "Echoing girl". "Kyouko" could have been intended as a pun, since all of her attacks are based on reflective boundaries. The two kanji characters for her surname are separated from the two characters for her name, but if you put them all together minus the last kanji, you will get the ateji spelling of "Yamabiko" (幽谷響), the name of her species, which is now normally spelled as やまびこ or 山彦. [1] [2]

Appearance

In Ten Desires's official art, Kyouko has teal colored hair and eyes and has yamabiko ears. She wears a long pale pink shirt with teal flower-shaped buttons and a white dress below it with black trim. She carries a bamboo broom.

Occupation

Currently is a Buddhist discipline at the Myouren Temple.

Story

Ten Desires

During the events of Ten Desires Kyouko welcomes every heroine that comes to the Myouren Temple, with Danmaku in attempt to drive off the intruders. However unsuccessfully, she allows them to investigate the graveyard behind the temple.

Relationships

Although there is no specific information about her relations with other characters, it can be assumed that she knows everyone from the Myouren Temple well.

Additional Information

Trivia

  • When Kyouko is ready to launch her next wave of an attack, her sprite is animated to make a shouting motion. Her ears vibrate extremely fast, almost like a blur.
  • Kyouko was featured on the official demo CD of Ten Desires.
  • Her surname was incorrectly written as "Kasoya" in both the demo and the first release of Ten Desires, but later fixed in 1.00b.

Fandom

  • Because of her ears, portraying her as a canine, with the addition of a tail and/or other dog attributes, is common. This is despite the fact that a Yamabiko is not a dog.

Kyouko Kasodani ○2面ボス 読経するヤマビコ

  幽谷 響子(かそだに きょうこ)
  Kasodani Kyouko

○2nd stage boss Sutra-Reciting mountain spirit

Kyouko Kasodani

Species: Yamabiko
Ability: Power to reflect sound waves

You may have loudly shouted "Yahoo-!" when climbing a mountain. If a response "Yahoo-!" comes back to you, then it must be a work of Yamabiko.

She lives in the mountains, and when she hears a joyous sound, she replies back with a loud voice. A good youkai with kind heart.

But these days, superstitions like "Yamabiko (mountain echoes) is just a reflection of sound waves coming back to you-" have become common beliefs. Realizing the emptiness of secularism, she decided to enter the Buddhist discipline.

Her ability works well with reciting Buddhist sutras. It is her everyday work in the mountains.

And by doing so, she was feared recently as "a sutra-reciting voice coming from a mountain where nobody is living", so she was able to retain her place as a youkai.
