The initial cast of characters. All innate spellcards increase in damage/healing by 5% per skill level, max at skill level 5 (unless noted otherwise), and cost 5 points to level (or 25 for Awakened spell cards). Damage formulas on the page are calculated for an S.lv of 1. Skills that are described to increase base stats actually increases growth rate by 0.1x of the stated amount.

Character Overview and Comments
Recruitment Reimu is part of your initial party
Play Notes Reimu is a well-rounded character who will end up being one of your most effective supports as you progress through the Great Tree. Early on she can help plow through random encounters, but despite composite spells being better in this game than in LoT1 due to only being reduced by either DEF or MND and not both, her mediocre offenses will eventually lead Reimu into falling back into a support role, where she really shines. Exorcising Border is one of only a few healing abilities that hits your entire front line (so don't neglect her MAG too much!), and Great Hakurei Barrier greatly increases the front's DEF and MND to tank through damage. Both of these spells are fairly expensive and slow, and Reimu will likely need to either concentrate or switch out to regain her MP. Her innate bulk isn't bad however, and with little reason to seriously pump her offense you should invest in defensive stats to make sure she stays healthy and can stay out during boss battles. While the general quality of characters has risen from LoT1 and thus Reimu isn't as absolutely necessary as in the first game, she's still a solid character that makes a great backbone for any party.

For her skills, Hakurei's Divine Protection is useful for prolonging your dungeon trips, while the buff gained from Grand Incantation can boost the power of Reimu's healing spell, doubling it's power; although whenever Reimu's MAG is buffed she should be able to heal enough regardless. Armored Yin-Yang Orb will protect you from bosses with powerful SPI attacks, and any build can benefit from all stats rising from Main Character:Reimu. (It's also unique for creating an "L" shape right next to her portrait) Youkai Buster can also be useful against bosses that are classified as such; they are very rarely found on early floors but become increasingly common as you move up the dungeon. Overall, her personal skills are somewhat unremarkable and she is better off strengthening her spells, stats, and subclass skills.

Name Max Lvl Cost Description
Fantasy Seal -Blink- 10 16 When the user receives a turn, increase "Fantasy Seal -Blink-" counter by 1. While the user is at the front, the user's all stats are increased by (counter*5)%, and all other frontliners' SPD is increased by (counter*3)%. The counter maxes out at (SLv).
Barrier Expert 1 50 Add medium chance, medium power PAR to all attacks. This effect stacks with spell or equipment effects. (Bug: only increases PAR effect of attacks that already inflict it)
Super Youkai Buster 2 40 Youkai Buster will give higher damage bonus against Youkai enemies. This effect extends to the entire frontline.
Comments
Fantasy Seal -Blink- is an extremely powerful passive. Not only does it bolster Reimu's stats by up to 50%, which is a great boost no matter what her goal is; it also bolsters the speed of the entire frontline, which can be combined with SPD buffs to make them even faster. The value of this skill alone is enough that pretty much any team that incorporates Reimu should aim to obtain this skill ASAP. With the extra durability and speed buff, Reimu can potentially stay out in the frontlines regularly instead of just long enough to support, giving regular access to healing and increased speed.

Alternatively if another support tank doesn't appeal to you, the sheer stat increase off -Blink-, base stat tweaking in Plus Disk, and boost from Grand Incantation allow Reimu to actually become a fearsome offensive blaster as strong as the other star nuking characters, with backup healing to boot- and almost everything in the basement floors is weak to SPI, even at the very end of the game. Doing the top floors is just a simple matter of subclassing for more attack elements.

Barrier Expert and Super Youkai Buster are also great passives to have, whether Reimu is built to attack or support; even her normal attack can be used to inflict PAR, whilst Ying-Yang Orb's becomes even better. Considering Reimu may want to use her normal attack numerous times to charge up -Blink-, this is a welcome addition though using Form Changes will charge up -Blink- faster.

Character Overview and Comments
Recruitment Marisa is part of your initial party
Play Notes Marisa is a purely offensive mage whose role differs between regular and boss battles. Against random foes, her high Speed helps her get the jump on dangerous mobs - Magic Missile is fast, cheap, and strong, while Asteroid Belt is one of your team's best multi-target attacks. Against bosses, Marisa brings her Master Spark spell to bear - while it consumes all her MP to cast, it has among the best damage of any attack in the game, especially after a cast or two of Concentration to boost her Magic. A full-powered Spark is excellent at taking out a weakened boss, especially since many bosses have an "enrage" mode that makes them more dangerous when low on HP. While fast and powerful, Marisa isn't a sustained fighter; she's quite fragile and you don't want to risk losing your Spark against a hard boss.

For skills, since her role is an offensive one, she should make sure that her damage ramps up. As she has nothing but Mystic spells to work with, Magic Training is extremely useful for boosting her damage and should be a priority as is Sheer Force, for all mystic-resistant foes. Afterwards she should work on Magic Boost and Speed Boost. MP Boost can be leveled early so you can use Master Spark earlier in the game or later to boost Master Spark's overall damage alongside leveling Master Spark itself. Sudden Impulse is up to your playstyle, but since her other skills are situational, Marisa should work on subclass skills; if her mono-mystic playstyle bothers you in random fights, supplement it with Toxicologist and eventually Plus Disk's Archmage.

Hakkoro Charge Mode 1 80 When the user receives a turn either in front or in back, increase Hakkoro Charge counter by 1. All attacks receive a damage bonus of (counter*4)%. The counter maxes at 25, and will not reduce in battle.
Hakkoro Custom Mode 1 70 Magic Missile, Asteroid Belt and Master Spark will inflict 25% more damage. This skill does not work if Hakkero Charge Mode is learned.
Magic Drain Missile 7 10 When Magic Missile inflicts damage to an enemy, restore the user's MP by (SLv).
Comments
The main benefit from Marisa's awakening skills is to increase her damage. Hakkoro Charge Mode can receive a maximum bonus of 100%, which can greatly increase the power of a finisher Master Spark, along with the massive max MP one can achieve in Plus Disk. Hakkoro Custom Mode only gives 25% bonus, but it requires no charge time at all and is better suited for defeating randoms. Magic Drain Missile essentially allows Marisa to recharge up to 5 MP with Magic Missile, letting her fire off another Master Spark sooner, but since she recharges MP in the back naturally anyway and isn't terribly durable, it's not a high priority.

Character Overview and Comments
Recruitment Rinnosuke is part of your initial party
Play Notes Unlike his main-character friends, Rinnosuke is completely reinvented for LoT2. Gone is the possibility-empowered MANnosuke; in its place is an unassuming support character. Rinnosuke carries your only initial single-target healing spell; it's very low-powered but has a low delay to match. He also carries a similarly weak-but-fast buffing spell that increases five stats in one shot (it also benefits greatly from leveling up compared to most other buffs; going from level 1 to 5 doubles the bonus!). Although useful when spammed, his low MP pool stops him from doing much early on. He also has no offensive spellcards, which pretty much limits him to being a pure support. Fortunately, he's fairly bulky and can serve as a decent meatshield with some defensive investment; something he eventually excels at with the proper High Boosts.

Despite his lack of fighting prowess early on, his item and money drop increasing skill may very well earn him a permanent spot in the party's back row. For more direct support, Accelerated Rank Switching is great, reducing the time before a character can act by more than half, and Attack/Magic Debuff when moving can weaken enemies who aren't resistant. Later on in the game, his High Boost skills can make him very durable (it's worth noting that even boost skills he doesn't initially have like HP Boost or Affinity Boost will become their High versions when learned via item). ATK/MAG High Boost give him passable offense, but he'll never be good at attacking; instead they can be used to boost his healing late in the game.

Comments
While Rinnosuke unfortunately receives no offensive potential, he does become much better at supporting. His new spell is similar to Demarcation, reducing debuffs by 50%, but while also curing all ailments, healing (a little), and buffing all stats (a little) for everyone in a single move. Battle Command is effectively combined into First Aid as the latter gains 15% buffs, and at lv3 it cures all statuses but PAR as well; late game it can heal an existent amount of HP with ATK/MAG high boost as well, although never a large amount. His own survivability is also boosted by the inclusion of Guts, and when he doesn't need to support anyone his normal attack gets a 10% all debuff attached to it as well. All the additions lets him fill in a lot more roles at once, which frees up slots for the rest of your team.

As a sidenote, Enhancer's "heal x% hp when buffing an ally" will not activate off Murakumo's Former Former Owner.

Character Overview and Comments
Recruitment Keine is part of your initial party
Play Notes Keine, as with Reimu, is a character whose role shifts over the game. Against random battles, her two offensive spells can contribute decent damage, and she can hit either the foes' Defense or Mind as needed; however, their power is low and they become obsolete by midgame. Instead, she begins to truly shine as a bulky support. Her best use in random battles is to increase her Speed and have her buff everyone's ATK and MAG before they act for greatly increased damage. For bosses, while Three Sacred Treasures - Mirror isn't as powerful as Great Hakurei Barrier, it's less expensive and has less delay; meanwhile Three Sacred Treasures - Sword is your only party offensive buff for almost the first half of the game and therefore invaluable support for stronger party members.

Since her main role in boss battle is a supportive one, her focus on skills is similar to Reimu - Raising MP and spellcard levels come first. Her personal skills provide slightly more benefit than Reimu's, but they are still rather trivial, so again subclass skills may aid her better in what she wants to do. In Plus Disk she receives a new skill History Accumulation that gives her extra stat boost when buffing, which greatly adds to her survivability... when she can eventually afford it.

Ability to Create History 3 25 The maximum stack of History Accumulation increases by (SLv).
Comments
Impervious Formation change is an upgrade of Effective Formation Change that lets any character Keine switches in act immediately, which is an extremely powerful boon for any hit-and-run characters or healers, and still a nice boost for everyone else. Combined with Organized Formation, Keine becomes the best switcher in the game; although towards the end of Plus Disk, ATB ticks so fast that it's equivalent to Effective Formation Change. The other two skills add to her stats, helping grant her more bulk... or alternatively, more offense.

All the base stat tweaking possible in Plus Disk can give Keine almost the highest offensive stat in the game with Mokou out and some stacks of History Accumulation, if not -the- highest, and special subclasses can give her powerful attacks to use it with. Although this build won't work until you can afford to tweak up her base MAG and requires use of Mokou, it can be surprisingly effective.
