| Suika is a bruiser who brings incredible physical power to the battlefield. Her lowish Defense but good Mind make her effective against many magic-using foes, and largely excellent ailment resists (aside from Poison and Debuff) can make her good against foes that fight with statuses. Spellwise, Suika's two main nukes are a weak, fast hit and a slow, strong hit, letting her use as much power as she needs. Gathering and Dissipating can weaken foes' offenses, while Missing Power slows her to a crawl but massively raises her power and toughness - in boss battles that drag on long enough for her to use Missing Power, Throwing Ame-no-Tajikarao is capable of absurdly large single hits and Suika will likely end up one of your best boss killers. Finally, Art of Segaki Binding can inflict often useful Heavy status ailment along with Terror and Paralysis, which is a big help against bosses that are susceptible to said ailments.

Suika's skills focus on prolonged battles. Encounter with a Strong Foe, for all intents and purposes, is an all-buff whenever she acts in boss battles. Ibuki Gourd adds to that self-buff, as well as HP and MP regeneration. Free-Spirited and Uninhibited Oni allows her to hit harder on weakened foes. Aside from the fact that no one dislikes being able to hit harder, weakened foes also tend to be frenzied foes that you'd rather not take your time around which makes it an absolutely amazing skill. Deep Fog Labyrinth's effect is subtle, but an Accuracy and Evasion boost is always welcomed. Art of Oni Binding is great for random encounters, though boosting her stats should take priority.

Character Overview and Comments
Recruitment
  • Meet the Scarlet Mansion residents on 1F and 4F to make her event appear on 7F.
  • Find all the different events involving Reimu, Marisa and Youmu on 7F and 8F.
  • Fight the boss where you found Meiling. She will join after it is defeated.
Play Notes Meiling is a tank whose specialty is in sustaining herself and keeping your party fresh. As expected of a tank, her Attack stat is only mediocre, but Mountain Breaker more than makes up for it with an absurd Attack modifier coupled with ignoring half of the target's Defense! Her true specialty, however, lies in the unique ability to heal as a tank. Colorful Rain is a self-heal which scales on both Attack and Magic, allowing Meiling to effectively convert her offensive stats into survivability. Healer doesn't restore much HP, but it removes common status ailments with relatively low delay. She's overall tough, although zero Shock and Debuff resistance hurts her and you should patch up her sub-100 Physical affinity pronto if you plan on using her.

Meiling's skills are also purely defensive. Natural is her most important skill, as her ability to self-heal is her main selling point for a tank. Gatekeeper's Duty allows her defense to gradually build up (as well as giving any teammates that happen to be there a slight protection), while Guts give her a chance at recovering from the unexpected.

Character Overview and Comments
Recruitment
  • 2F: Defeat Alice's Doll?
  • 4F: Defeat Alice's Upgraded Remote Doll
  • 7F: Find all three events involving Marisa and Alice's doll, then defeat Alice to recruit her.
Play Notes Alice is a tactical mage with some unorthodox tricks up her sleeve. Her Artful Sacrifice and Little Legion spellcards both scale from her Magic but target enemies' Defense, letting her work well against high-Mind foes. Her new Tripwire is an extremely accurate spell that can hit foes with three different immobilization effects - there are a significant number of bosses mid-game that are vulnerable to Heavy, and Alice is one of only a few characters that can reliably inflict it. Add all this to Alice's above-average-for-a-mage bulk, the game's best evasion (with her skill accounted), and you have an effective ally.

Doll Guard is her most important skill, as with two points her evasion jumps to a staggering 72, which makes her the most evasive character in the game. On the offensive front she has Final Blow which she can activate easily herself via Tripwire, and Malice Cannon as well. Manipulation of Dolls is very useful towards the endgame, where nearly every boss you fight after a certain point is inorganic. Emergency Charge further complements her evasion and decent bulk, though it is fueled by a somewhat low TP count(making her a decent candidate for learning TP Boost). She's also a prime candidate for learning Evasion Boost, to further complement the survivability brought by Doll Guard.

Character Overview and Comments
Recruitment
  • Gensokyo: After spending 255 points across all characters at the Magic Library, Patchouli will give you a quest to kill 5 differents magic crystals in the Great Tree
  • 5F to 7F: The five crystals are scattered in those three floors, kill them all, then return to the Magic Library to recruit Patchouli.
Play Notes Look no further than Patchouli if you're in the market for unbridled magical power. Packing sky-high Magic, a tie for the most base MP in the game, and five elemental nukes (four of which are all-target), Patchy can make short work of any foe that isn't magically impervious. In addition, her superb Mind and five good affinities make her a good magic tank. Unfortunately, her other stats are downright terrible - she's glacially slow, has next to no evasiveness, scores a zero in five ailment resistances, and has the physical durability of wet tissue paper. Patchy is high-risk, high-reward - don't send her out unless you're sure she can live long enough to do her job.

Patchouli's skills demonstrate her mastery of magic. Great Incantation gives a massive boost to her next spell and should be a priority if you plan to use her in boss fights. The Girl of Knowledge and Shade allows her to reliably get her damage through even against resistant enemies - something that is very handy against highly varied enemy formations. The Unmoving Great Library can aid her MP recovery when in the safest row slot (and someone as frail as she has no business being anywhere else in the vanguard anyway). Passive Philosopher's Stone can be situationally useful when using Patchouli as a Mind tank and Rapid Charge can be great if you need Patchouli's MP back up to decent levels in a pinch, though boosting her MP, Magic and Elemental Resistances should take priority over these two.

Character Overview and Comments
Recruitment
  • 7F: If you have recruited Kaguya on 5F, she will join you when you speak with Eirin on 7F.
  • 11F: If you have recruited Kaguya on 10F, Eirin will join you if your speak with her on 11F.
Play Notes Eirin is far and away the bulkiest healer available to your team, packing base defensive stats on par with several of your tank characters. Offensively, she packs three all-target offensive spells, each of which carries a different effect, although they have longish delay and Eirin herself isn't exactly high-Speed. Her main draw is Hourai Elixir, a single-target heal that heals 50% of the target's max HP; this makes her great for healing high HP characters like Komachi. On top of that, it also removes all ailments and debuffs.

Ability-wise, Healing Touch is Eirin's specialty, allowing her powerful heal to never be wasted. Unlike in the first game, overhealed HP will not be reset when the character is switched or attacked, making this much more powerful. She can also improve her damage output with People of the Moon, and provide offensive support with Pharmacist's Poison Mixing. Cooling Down can help Eirin stay on the front lines keeping your characters healed up while Thousand Year Exile speeds up her recovery when she needs to go in reserve, though she doesn't have many MP issues to begin with, especially if you skip People of the Moon.

Do note that Healing Touch works using any heal spell, and is only limited by her fixed healing spell. So giving Eirin the Healer subclass will allow her to overheal anyone on the party up to astronomical levels of health given the proper magic investment. While this route does sacrifice a bit of her bulk so as to invest in magic, it does allow for Eirin's specialty to be utilized to its fullest potential.

Character Overview and Comments
Recruitment
  • 7F: If you have recruited Mokou on 5F, she will join you when you speak with Eirin on 7F.
  • 11F: If you have recruited Kaguya on 5F, she will join you when you speak with her after recruiting Mokou on 10F.
Play Notes Reisen is a mage who specializes in debilitating foes while wearing them down with damage. All four of her offensive spellcards inflict some kind of effect on their targets, from spreading statuses to shredding stats. Lunatic Red Eyes and Mind Starmine are powerful all-target spells with both statuses and increased accuracy, while Gas-Woven Orb is a source of Poison damage. Of particular note is Discarder, which debuffs five stats in one go and also serves as Reisen's single-target nuke. Finally, while her own stats on paper are largely average, Grand Patriot's Elixir buffs all her stats at virtually no delay; after a few drinks Reisen becomes downright deadly.

Her skills give further synergy to her ability to inflict ailments. Final Blow provides her with more damage against them, while Intense Vertigo makes it easier for those ailments to land in the first place. People of the Moon also allow her actual damage to increase, particularly against high mind foes and Broad Spirit Modulation is great at passively softening up bosses. Residents of Eientei can be great if you're using her with other residents and Wavelength of Insanity is great against bosses that like to use Mystic attacks, but her stat boosts are generally more important to raise.

  • 5F: Find an event with Sanae
  • 7F & 8F: Find events with Kanako and Suwako
  • 8F: Find an event with Sanae. Talk to her again and give her 3 "Symbol of Faith" (Mind +36% item) and she'll join you.
Play Notes Sanae is a balanced mage that can deal reliable damage and support allies very well. On the offensive, she's doesn't have a lot of raw power, but her attack spells are inexpensive and cover two elements. Night of Bright Guest Stars is notable for its surprisingly high multiplier in addition to never missing, making it useful for hitting evasive foes and dropping big damage if the appropriate buffs and debuffs are in effect. As a support, she's spectacular at single target healing and buffing. Although she lacks Eirin's ability to overheal, she has the strongest base heal in the game, which also cures all debuffs and ailments at reasonable cost and delay. Miracle Fruits also buffs all of an ally's stats by 30-42%, which is the most efficient single unit buff outside of Byakuren's buff-passing shenanigans. Sanae also sets herself apart with her solid base ailment resistances across the board.

Sanae's skillset is party-oriented. Youkai Buster and Power of the Living God increase your party's damage output while Sanae's active and power up her own Spirit attack, while Last Wish buffs all other active members significantly should she fall. Expansion of Consciousness, when maxed out, doubles her MP recovery and makes her very sustainable in longer boss battles. Divine Protection of Moriya (or at least its effect, which is currently erroneously placed on Last Wish instead) is a peerless skill for prolonged exploration, as it's the only source of TP restoration in the game. Grateful Believers of Moriya Shrine is a good skill if you're using her with her Moriya friends, though her Defense and Mind Boost skills should be given priority over this.

Character Overview and Comments
Recruitment
  • She will block your way on the second part of 8F, defeat her and she will join you. She is required to beat the game.
Play Notes A fairly durable mage, Iku's real strength is in her ability to support your party. Her signature Thundercloud Stickleback grants a large Attack and Magic buff at the risk of Paralysis, and her new Whiskers of the Dragon God lets her buff Speed at the cost of defenses. Both of her offensive spells debuff foes' Defense, which she can't take advantage of but your physical fighters will appreciate. While her Magic stat isn't actually that bad, you're probably better of building her defensive and letting her power up allies.

Iku's seemingly generic skills become excellent when considering their synergy with her buffs. Flexibility lets her fly in the face of defensive debuffs and turns Whiskers into a very potent self-buff, while Supple Hagoromo gives you some buffer against the unfortunate side effects of Stickleback. Hisouten Guard is very easy to activate, given that both Tenshi and Iku are very useful members to stay on the field, and Iku getting defensive buffs helps her better support your team. Magic Counter and Heaven's Hagoromo provide Iku with a source of MP-free damage output while supporting your team, giving the oft-neglected Attack command a rare moment of usefulness. Finally, Heavenly Maiden's Blow allows Iku to take advantage of any Mind debuffs that the enemy may have to deal more damage overall, although she cannot deal said debuff herself.

For subclasses, one way is to give her the Enhancer subclass to strengthen her buffs and give them a healing effect to enhance her ability as a support. However, like Chen, Iku is capable of using the Hexer's Conversion skill effectively thanks to the potent self debuff from her Whiskers support spell, and unlike Chen, the HP restore will be as appreciated as the MP restore, due to her role as a stay in supporter. She can also use the spells in that subclass to aid in support as well, as being able to debuff Attack and Magic can help in reducing the damage dealt to your party, and being able to inflict Mind debuffs helps her own damage output via Heavenly Maiden's Blow, as well as the damage output of any of your other mages as well.

Alternatively, Iku can be used as the single strongest defense-ignoring magical attacker in the game, letting her shred bosses with only her basic Attack command. Maxing Hagoromo Like Sky in combination with the Sorcerer subclass' Enhanced Normal Attack results in a 7000-delay attack at 1 MP cost that ignores 80% defenses and hits like a truck. Utilizing her own self buffs to get her damage output started and the subclass passive buffs to keep her Magic stat buff from decreasing over long battles, she becomes one of the fastest and most efficient sources of single target damage in the game. To add a little extra insult to injury, use allies to debuff enemy Mind in combination with Iku's Heavenly Maiden's Blow to truly make the enemy defenseless against her.

  • Note: The items are consumed when doing the event with Suika, but they can be reacquired on later floors behind the rocks that need "the little oni" to go through.
Play Notes Suika is a bruiser who brings incredible physical power to the battlefield. Gathering and Dissipating can weaken foes' offenses, while Missing Power slows her to a crawl but massively raises her power and toughness - in boss battles that drag on long enough for her to use Missing Power, Throwing Atlas is capable of absurdly large single hits and Suika will likely end up one of your best boss killers.

Fog Labyrinth's effect is subtle, but an Accuracy and Evasion boost is always welcomed. Art of Oni Binding is great for random encounters, though boosting her stats should take priority.

Character Overview and Comments
Recruitment
  • 4F to 9F: On each floor, there will be an event with Chen following the trail of Ran. You need a certain amount of Battle Point with Chen to trigger each of those events. The first event requires 50 BP, the next requires 100 BP, the next requires 150 BP, then 200 BP for every event afterwards.
  • 9F: Defeat Ran and she will join you.
Play Notes Jill-of-all-trades Ran brings well-balanced stats and a versatile array of spellcards to the table. All her numbers are fair-to-solid, aside from a lack of Shock and Debuff resistance and a severe weakness to Cold; she can easily be tailored as a bulky support or a more offensive mage. She also packs two party buffs, both of which play into her unique specialty.

Said specialty is her Super-Fast Hard Arithmetic skill, which allows her all-target buffs to hit the reserve party as well at half strength. You can use this to buff your attackers without needing to expose them to any risk, which is a great boon to have. Note that this skill will in fact work with the Enhancer's Heart of Prayers, allowing you to heal people in reserve with her buff spells as well. This skill will also double the MP cost of those spells, but Ran also has several MP recovery related skills that allow her to recover them easily. Ability to use Shikigamis provides an amazing buff to Chen (one of few buffs that can buff ACC and EVA), so Ran might just be better off as a bulky support.
