1F: The Root of Gensokyo's Great Tree

Overview

The first floor of the Great Tree is there to ease you into the game. You'll only have the first four characters to begin with; put Keine and Rinnosuke in your left slots so they can put their higher durability to use. Get used to the game and explore everywhere - check every event tile and find all the treasure and character events.

  • Your first priority should be to head to the western part of the maze and recruit Momiji, who will serve as your first real tank. Simply walk onto the event tile and she'll join you without any fuss.
  • Kogasa can be found near the bottom right of the floor, but won't join you yet. After defeating the Malignuts Eater (see below) you'll receive a broken umbrella. Return to Gensokyo and visit Nitori's Workshop to get it fixed, then return to Kogasa and she'll join your party.
  • Your last obstacle is a pillar of ice in the northeast area. You'll need to defeat and recruit Youmu so she can break it.
  • Other than that, Rumia, located in the top-left middle part of map will join you, if you have 3 Manga Meat in inventory. They are found in chests and in shop for 240 pts (The item that boosts your HP recovery by 3), and will disappear on joining.
  • After an event with Chen, a boss icon will pop up on the North East side of the floor. This "Boss" fight is one of 3 fights needed before Chen can be recruited.
  • Parsee (lower right part) will join you if you have 12 characters while talking to her.
  • There are 3 chests in the lower left corner, which are locked and requires keys to be opened. Keys can be obtained via achievements and chests.
  • After coming down from Floor 2 in the lower left corner, an event with Mystia is reachable. She will be recruitable once you defeat the FOE on 4F.

Enemies

  • The enemies on this floor are as weak as you'd expect, although still powerful enough to dent your party before they have a level or two behind them.
  • Nut Eater can use Nut Throw to deal high damage as well as land a Shock staus-effect to your party member.
  • Kuron Nuts are particularly annoying thanks to their high Defense and its even higher Mind. It can also use Harden to further increase its Defense.
  • Walking Unripe Fruit is a rare monster on this floor. It can use Photosynthesis to heal itself. Other than that, it is not particularly difficult.
  • Forest Fairy has very high Mind so keeps your magic attackers away from it. It also hits your party fairly hard with its nature attacks.

Your first boss fight is with...an umbrella-wielding squirrel. The Malignut Eater isn't really all that dangerous; while it's a good bit faster than your party is likely to be at this point, its physical attacks aren't much stronger than its common brethren on this floor. It can, however, summon four regular Nuts Eaters, which it will do its first turn and randomly thereafter. It will immediately use a spell that gives the lackeys a full timebar, although the worst they're likely to do is Shock your teammates unless you get unlucky and they all focus Reimu or Marisa. There aren't any special tricks to this fight - use Keine and Rinnosuke to buff your team, toss some healing if you need it, and have Marisa and Momiji beat it down with their powerful attacks.

Despite being marked on the map as a boss battle, this is just a group of five regular foes you'll likely have run into plenty of times by now. Your multiple-target attackers shouldn't have any trouble wiping them all out in one or two attacks.

No more warm-up bosses - this fight is for real. Youmu attacks primarily with powerful physical strikes that will put a dent in even your bulkier party members. During the first phase, she attacks you mostly with single-target hits. After Youmu's HP is down to 80%, she will use Slash Clearing the Six Senses, an all-target Nature strike good for 60-80 damage to your whole party and she will add that attack to her arsenals. Make sure you keep everyone topped off and don't be afraid to spam Reimu's and Keine's defensive buffs. Her biggest threat is God's Slash of Karma Wind, which will deal triple digit damage to your entire party; however, this attack only activates at 60% and 20% HP threshold and she'll have to spend the turn concentrating before casting it, which will drain her timebar to almost empty, so you need to do as much preparation as you can before she attacks. Youmu is vulnerable Dark and Mystic attacks in particular, which makes Marisa, Rumia, and Kogasa strong in this fight - Kogasa can even inflict a Mind debuff with her A Rainy Night's Ghost Story spell.

After being defeated, Youmu will join your party.
