Additional Info

Translator note: As a whole, this story alludes to Zhuangzi’s butterfly dream, the traditional tale in which a man ponders whether he dreams that he is a butterfly, or whether he’s a butterfly dreaming that he’s a human.

Also, all of the “you’s” use the feminine form
Original Romanized Translation

natsukashii hanashi wo shimashou kochou no you na yumegatari kawaranai kono mainichi ga tsuzuku to shinjiteta anata ga ite watashi ga ite sekai wa mawari tsuzuketa kotoba tarazu na sekai sotto mimi sumase monouge na anata no tonari kara

I’ll tell you a nostalgic story. It’s about a dream I once had, like that tale about the butterfly… I believed that my days would continue as they were. You were there, I was there, and the world kept turning. It was an indescribable world. I secretly strained my ears from beside you. You were so sombre.

nozoki komu you ni warau watashi anata ni naritakute dokoka e kietetta ano hi ni okiwasurete kita nda jibun jishin wo

I tried to take a closer look… I was smiling. I wanted to be like you And I left myself behind in my past days, Which vanished somewhere.

sou sa fushiawase na ashita nanka otozure wa shinai datte kizutsuku no wa itsumo itsumo ima no jibun dake "itsuka" sonna saki no mirai nanka mitousenakute mo ii nda me ga same tara "ohayou" tte ieru dake de ii kara

That’s right—an unhappy future will never arrive Because the only one who’s ever hurt is me, as I am now. “One day.” I don’t need to predict what will happen after that Because I’m fine with just being able to say “good morning” when I wake up.

Now, I’ll tell you a mysterious story. I’ve become a butterfly. I must have had 1000 different thoughts But I didn’t tell anyone a single one. You know, I couldn’t even be myself.

anata kara mita kono sekai wa subete ga irozuki niji iro ni kumoru kokoro ni tameiki wo tsui tara shabon no you ni tonde tonde tonde wa kieta

This world, seen from your eyes, Is so colourful. I let out a sigh Aimed at that rainbow-covered heart. Then, like a bubble It flew, flew, flew… and vanished.

"kami-sama toka fukouhei da" sou nan janakute chotto dake fubyoudou na dake na nda to omou yume ga sameru noni wa chotto haya sugita

“God is unfair.” That’s not how it is at all— I think we’re just a little bit unequal. It was too early for me to wake up.

sou sa futoumei na mirai nanka otozure wa shinai datte shinjiru no wa mae wo muita ano hi no anata na nda "hoka no" dareka nanka wa hitsuyou nai kawari wa daremo inai anata dake demo waraeru nara sekai wa mawaru

That’s right—an uncertain future will never arrive Because, back then, you were the one who believed. You were optimistic. I don’t need anyone else. Nobody else can take your place. Even if only you can smile, the world will turn.

toutoki kotoba yori mo anata no kotoba dake kikitorereba ii

Rather than honorific language, I only want to listen to your words.

sou sa fushiawase na ashita nanka otozure wa shinai datte sen no yoru mo akakuru asa mo watashi(anata) ga iru

That’s right—an unhappy future will never arrive Because for a thousand nights and dawns, you (I) will be there. [1]
