Prior to the events of Wily Beast and Weakest Creature, the Haniwa Army Corps were able to clear the garden of animal spirits and create a protected home for the human spirits. However, they've replaced the workforce of human spirits entirely since they are very durable as crafted soldiers, lacking the need for rest and unable to get sick. Since the animal spirits lacked a physical body that they could do harm to the hollow soldiers with, the leaders of the gangs were forced to make a counter plan to defeat Keiki's haniwa. Only after Mayumi and her soldiers were confronted by the animal spirit possessing the protagonist, a living human, was she defeated, allowing the animal spirits to pass through into the garden unprotected.

Mayumi is based off of funerary objects called haniwa, clay sculptures which were buried with the high-ranking dead in the Kofun era. Although modern scholars speculate them to have been for the religious purpose of protecting the deceased in the afterlife, their true purpose is unclear. They are terracotta figures most commonly depicted as soldiers, with a few variations.
Name
Mayumi's full name is Mayumi Joutouguu.
Her surname Joutouguu is likely derived from Joutoujin (杖刀人), which is the figure she is based on. The guu (偶) in her name is the same character in doguu (土偶), which refers to clay figures similar to haniwas, and guuzou (偶像), which means "idol".
Her first name, Mayumi, is a real-life given name that means "polished bow" in this case. The first kanji "polish" (磨) is related to a typical tool in the ancient ages "polished-stone tools" (磨製石器). On the other hand, "arrow" (弓) is what many haniwa hold in their arms, since they were burden in the tombs of authorities (古墳) in order to guard them.
The sound of her personal name "Mayumi" is derived from the voice actress "Mayumi Tanaka" (田中真弓), appearing in so many anime. One of them is '"Hanimaru'" (はに丸), the main character of an educatinal TV program "O~i Hanimaru" (お〜いはに丸). ZUN brings it up on his comment of Mayumi's theme in Music Mode.
