Mima is a Ghost that haunts the area around the Hakurei Shrine. She is very confident in her abilities, and even boastful of them. Although she claims during Story of Eastern Wonderland to want revenge against the entire human race it's not known what Mima's motivations for that are. She is also attempting to revive herself. Although she is often called a ghost, during Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream Mima denies being dead and tries to explain herself as being "just a soul." Unless further information about her is revealed we may never know just what exactly she is or how she came to be that way.
Fun Facts
- The name "Mima" means "charming demon".
- Mima appears on the covers of Story of Eastern Wonderland and Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream. She is also on the cover of Akyu's Untouched Score vol.4.
- Although originally a very prominent character in the series (one of the earliest bosses/playable characters and appearing in almost every pre-Windows game from the very beginning), like many PC98 characters, she has entirely disappeared from the series from Embodiment of Scarlet Devil onward. She is occasionally depicted in fanart or doujinshi as having taken up residence at the Hakurei Shrine, along with Suika.
- The bloody knife she carries in her original appearance may be a hint at her past, how she became a ghost, or why she became an "evil spirit."
- It's unknown why she resents the Hakurei Shrine and if or how she may be connected with its past, but she seems knowledgeable about many things related to it, such as the Yin-Yang orbs only being properly usable by blood members of the Hakurei clan.
- There is a fan theory that Mima is the one that taught Marisa how to use magic. This is mainly because during Marisa's first appearance in Story of Eastern Wonderland, Marisa tries to protect Mima who she calls "Mima-sama," and when Mima defeats Marisa during Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream she scolds Marisa to train harder. It is also worth noting that every attack Marisa used in her first appearance, Mima could use as well (final boss fight of SoEW) with variations.
- Another fan theory has it that Mima is Marisa's mother. This is based on the story text accompanying track 10 (Reincarnation, Mima's Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream theme) of the music CD Dolls in Pseudo Paradise.
- Some people think that Mima's ghostly tail in Touhou 1-3 resembles a piece of shrimp tempura. As such, she is occasionally depicted with it in fanart.
- One of her attacks used in Story of Eastern Wonderland (namely, Orreries Sun), slightly resembles the same attacks used by the boss Bloody Mary from the RPG Terranigma. This is most likely a coincidence, however.
- Interestingly enough, Mima's "Orreries Sun" attack is one of the super moves that Marisa can perform in Immaterial and Missing Power and Scarlet Weather Rhapsody.
- Mima was possibly made reference to in Curiosities of Lotus Asia Chapter 25, when Reimu mentions that her shrine was once taken over by an evil spirit for its god.

Spirit who leaves fate to the dream of eternity - Mima
Evil spirit that resents the Hakurei Shrine, or used to. As she's been an evil spirit for quite a long time, her evilness has completely fallen off from her. Now she enjoys her days making fun of Reimu. She is like the deity (evil deity) of the Shrine by now, but her personality is more human-ish than human. As strange things are happening again, she is looking forward to more upcoming events. |
