Revision as of 04:34, 4 July 2013

Most of the characters in Mystical Power Plant are original and non-existent in the Touhou Project. The following six are, however, officially part of the Touhou Project and are playable characters in Mystical Power Plant, each with two different shot types. The midboss of stage 6 is also an official character. All characters except the above are the originals.

(Thermal Power Generation Team)

Reimu Hakurei

Reimu Hakurei
Playable character

The now-familiar shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine.

Whenever an incident occurs in Gensokyo, she pins the culprit to the ground with just a single danmaku pattern. She is, so to speak, a symbol of overwhelming "power" in Gensokyo. Therefore, an opponent who gets to their feet once again after being made to surrender is an extremely inconvenient thing for her. To make matters even worse, she can't possibly allow her shrine to be taken over by those foreign gods, the Moriyas...! It's normal for her to suddenly become a capable person when an incident happens, but this time she seems very flustered inside.

--

Utsuho Reiuji

Utsuho Reiuji
Playable character

The foremost pet of Satori Komeiji, master of the Palace of the Earth Spirits. Reimu abducted her and forced her to participate in resolving the incident.

She's been working in the Underground Geyser Center, having been cajoled into it by the Moriyas, but it seems she hasn't noticed the fact that the center's machine parts were being gradually stolen prior to the incident. Her work is to maintain the heat of the nuclear fusion reactors. Thanks to her hell-raven birdbrain, she can't be conscious of other things while she's doing that. She surely must have seen the culprit unconsciously. Of course, even if they were to use Satori's mind-reading ability on her, reconstructing the image would be nothing but a far-off dream.

--

(Magic Power Generation Team)

Marisa Kirisame

Marisa Kirisame
Playable character

An ordinary magician living in Gensokyo. Fond of collecting things.

Recently, she's been thinking about gathering every danmaku pattern that she's seen or heard about in a book, and putting it out on the market. So, this time, she brought a super-thin camera with her, said to be one of the latest products from outside. If it hadn't been for the time she lost while searching for it in the mountain of junk piled in her home, her position of "first to combat the Moriya Shrine" probably wouldn't have been taken by Reimu. Plus, she later noticed that what she had brought with her wasn't a camera, but actually a music-listening device. Well, no use crying over it. Pulling herself together, sticking both of the ports in her ears, and marching towards the Life-Guiding Tree with music pumping her up-- she's a human with an extremely positive way of thinking.

--

Byakuren Hijiri

Byakuren Hijiri
Playable character

The youkai priest of the flying youkai temple. Marisa abducted her and forced her to participate in resolving the incident.

In the Human Village, she's known as a mild-mannered nun who dislikes fighting, but that's just because most of the humans in the village conform to Buddhism in some form or another. She was visiting the mountain this time in order to spy on the Moriya Shrine, which is essentially a religious business rival for her, and in doing so gain superiority in the religious war that would soon take place in Gensokyo. The foolish priest, putting too much confidence in her own group's power, was still unaware-- unaware of the feast that her pupils were starting at the Myouren Temple in her absence...

--

(Wind Power Generation Team)

Sanae Kochiya

Sanae Kochiya
Playable character

The shrine maiden living in the Moriya Shrine on the Youkai Mountain. As usual, she doesn't have a scrap of dignity as a god.

If the Gensokyo energy revolution proposed by Kanako and co. were to succeed, she'd soon be able to use the cell phone she brought with her from the outside world...! Her view of Kanako and Suwako, the leaders of reform in Gensokyo, was shining and overflowing with respect... "was" being the operative word. They've been repeatedly taking on reckless challenges, and failing over and over. The light in her eyes, once that of a puppy loved by its owner, has now somehow changed into that which feels pity for a puppy that's been abandoned.

--

Kanako Yasaka

Kanako Yasaka
Playable character

The god of the Moriya Shrine on the mountaintop. Although she's not the actual culprit behind the incident, she's once again caused the incident indirectly.

She found a super-massive tree towering at the very, very edge of Gensokyo, unknown to anybody. She thought that it would make for a suitable symbol of next-generation clean energy, as well as her and her partner Suwako Moriya's power to control heaven and earth. With her motto being "do it as soon as you think of it," it seems she immediately borrowed power from the opportunistic Suwako, and moved the towering tree to the mountaintop in an instant... but unfortunately, in today's society, that sort of thing sounds just too good to be true.

--

Kodama

Kodama are spirits dwelling within trees. The trees that they dwell in may also be called kodama themselves.

...is what Professor Wikipedia is telling me. They're pretty similar beings to fairies, in a sense.

Naturally, it's not at all strange for a tree as old as the Life-Guiding Tree to have a mountain of kodama settling down in it.

A suspicious girl who calls herself "Yakushi-nyorai," a great god of medical treatment.

Her true identity is that of a youkai from abroad, who came to this country from the far-off India in ancient times.

She was originally a devil called a "Yaksha," who caused floods and monsoons with her power over water. Before long, though, some confusing phonology led to her being confused with and worshipped as Yakushi-nyorai. To the general populace, "Yaksha" sounded nearly identical to "Yakushi". There nothing to be done about it. On top of that, the actual Yakushi-nyorai was coincidentally said to be obeyed by 12 or even 16 yaksha, so the grounds for misunderstanding were more than ripe enough. For Kusuko herself, it went without saying that being worshipped felt nicer than being feared. At some point, she began to imitate Yakushi-nyorai, and began to acquire medicinal knowledge by teaching herself.

At one time, an outsider arrived from a land across the sea. But surprisingly, in an instant, she snatched away the temple devoted to the then-deified Kusuko, along with all of her gathered faith. The native faith had been driven out by a foreign faith. Next time, Kusuko was going to give her a taste of what she had once done. Thus, Kusuko immediately understood. The culprit who had caused the giant tree to suddenly shine had to be that detestable, terrifying fated enemy of hers. Should she flee? Or should she demand a rematch--? As she was puzzling over this, Kusuko was shot down by the human flying out of the Moriya Shrine. She's terribly noncommital and indecisive.

Haven't you ever had an experience where you were walking a dark road at night, and something suddenly covered your face?

You haven't? Huh, really. The true nature of that is a youkai mouse called a "nobusuma," like Momo herself. Or also a youkai squirrel. But, eh, it's not a very big deal which.

At a glance, they're just ordinary rodents, but they actually have the ability to fly with their hidden wings. This is considered to be their trump card for surprising humans. Of course, girl-shaped youkai flying through the sky is everyday scenery for Gensokyo. If a human were surprised by that, it would just be because there was something suddenly flying at them in the dark. Besides that, she's practiced skills such as breathing small flames and predicting the weather, but has no other ideas as to the development of new surprising skills. Much like an energy revolution, the business of surprising humans is a vicious circle of advancement and stagnation.

Currently, she's arrived with an interest in the huge light that suddenly appeared in the sky. Because, you see, she's heard that electricity-controlling mice and squirrels, and even flying squirrels, are said to be popular in the outside world.

One of the angels from the Western lands, who've suddenly appeared in Gensokyo since the Wicked Star Incident.

They have two rough categories: those that came bearing the job of propagating Christianity, and those who found Gensokyo comfortable and settled down without asking their god, Yahweh, first. Saraka's role is to hunt down "fallen angels" who've left the path of angels, such as those in the latter group, and cart them back. Wielding her large, soul-reaping scythe, she closely resembles one of the Sanzu River's shinigami, which tacitly and effectively conveys the fact that religion essentially involves different countries copying from each other.

...however, she has a difficult personality, hunting not just angels but also the phantoms and vengeful spirits from humans, showing almost no self-control. Thus, she herself is on the verge of becoming a fallen angel, too. Apart from her large scythe, she can control the power of the insanity-causing moon. This, however, is because she was originally an angel with the power of the sun, but in falling from grace her powers have had their characteristics inverted. Because she naturally hasn't gone back to Heaven for a while, she hasn't noticed her fall from grace, and is pleased with the new powers she obtained. Fallen angels often fall when they get drunk off of such non-Godly powers. Again, this may also be only a matter of time for her.

This time, she was hanging around the Life-Guiding Tree because there were 2 very interesting things for her there. The first was the mysterious metal boards that absorbed sunlight and produced energy, much like herself. The other was a soul that was living in disregard for the laws of Heaven--- which is what she was hunting.

Tenmu Suitokuin (祟徳院 天夢) is the Stage 4 boss.

Concept

Tenmu Suitokuin is based on Emperor Sutoku, the 75th emperor of Japan. After his abdication and death, Sutoku is said to have become a vengeful spirit (in some accounts, a great tengu). Along with Sugawara no Michizane and Taira no Masakado, Emperor Sutoku is known as one of the three great vengeful spirits of Japan.

Name

Her last name, "Suitokuin" (祟徳院), is nearly identical to "Sutokuin" (崇徳院), the name taken by Emperor Sutoku after abdicating. "Sutoku" means "esteemed virtue", while "Suitoku" means "vengeful virtue". The character "In" (院) has several meanings, one of which is a suffix added to emperors' names after the end of their reign. "Sutokuin", then, essentially means "the ex-emperor Sutoku".

Mystical Power Plant - Tenmu Suitokuin Profile

  Suitokuin Tenmu

The "Great Tengu" are high-ranking youkai who hold administrative positions in tengu society. However, their true nature is that of humans who held exalted positions, and became youkai due to strong resentment in life.

In order to get revenge, she gathered up youkai with her authority, and formed a system of government on the mountain along with the tengu's leader, Tenma. As such, she greatly disliked the gods from outside, who had suddenly started living on the mountain as of late. (Incidentally, she didn't particularly mind the angels who had previously taken control of the mountain, since they went home right away.) The Geyser Incident, the Treasure Ship Incident--- with these incidents that the Moriya gods had caused, she saw an opportunity. She had her news corps bash them, and attempted to spread bad rumors as well, but it wasn't all that successful. There were various causes; the Moriyas skillfully avoided being caught, and the information about the underground world had been blockaded by someone. Above all, though, the matter of the Moriya Shrine that wouldn't (or couldn't) leave was just something that the humans and youkai outside the mountain didn't care about.

When she found out that Kanako and co. had brought the Life-Guiding Tree to the mountain, and on top of that had invited a god from the outside world, Tenmu was sure that the Moriyas' reputation would be lost for good this time. Why? Because she and the god who the Moriyas had brought had some connection, and no small amount of friendship. She secretly came into contact with "her", and came up with a plot. If "she" were to cause an incident, an enormous amount of energy would gather in the Life-Guiding Tree, and if that went out of control, the ensuing crisis could destroy Gensokyo. That wasn't what "she" was actually planning on, but the possibility of it gave Tenmu more than enough material to ensare the Moriyas. Additionally, the panicked Moriyas would fly towards the tree for sure, and Tenmu herself would catch them in the act there. While helping "her" achieve her goal, Tenmu would obtain an excuse with which to drive the Moriyas off of the mountain. Having them admit that their energy plan was no good would be enough on its own, but if she managed to get information about the Geyser and Treasure Ship Incidents right from the culprits themselves, there couldn't be a greater outcome for her. She also stationed the news corps and patrol corps serving under Aya Shameimaru along the path from the village to the mountain, in order to obstruct the shrine maiden's interference.

Her plan was perfect. If there was one fatal flaw in it, it was that the tengu executive herself was caught cooperating with the incident instead.

An Yaesaki (八重咲 杏) is the Stage 5 boss.

Concept

An Yaesaki is based on the legend of the Tobiume (lit. "flying plum tree"). As explained in An's backstory (see below), the Tobiume was a plum tree beloved by Sugawara no Michizane. After his exile, the tree is said to have uprooted itself and flown to Dazaifu to meet him. A tree said to be the Tobiume is currently located in the Dazaifu Tenmanguu shrine.

  Yaesaki An

Many spirits live within the Life-Guiding Tree, an old plum tree that has lived since the Heian era. In a certain sense, they're similar to fairies, which are themselves embodiments of nature. In another sense, they are the Life-Guiding Tree itself. Don't go saying anything like "why are they named 'Anzu' if they're a plum tree?".

They reside in the giant sacred tree called the Life-Guiding Tree, and there are a horrendous number of them. However, all those individuals share one self known as "An". She can freely gather into a humanoid form, and separate into countless smaller bodies. Don't go saying anything like "so would the plural of 'An' be 'Anzu'?".

In the outside world, a certain legend about the Life-Guiding Tree has been handed down. Long ago, in the era of Heian, the plum tree (that is, An) had a master named Mitama Magahara. After Mitama was chased from the capital city to the far-off city of Dazaifu, the tree that adored her is said to have uprooted itself and flown after her. This is the "Legend of Tobiume". It's probably obvious already, but the tree's flight was because of An. However, in reality, she didn't have enough power to fly all the way to Dazaifu. She ran out of energy on the way there, and took root in the ground where she landed. The tree known as Tobiume in present-day Dazaifu was actually grown from a cutting, brought there by a visitor from the capital. The genuine Tobiume, having crash-landed without anyone knowing, was soon reduced to a mere fantasy.

"Even if I'm gone, my scent will still reach you, being carried on the spring wind." Her master said that when they parted. An was very loyal to her master (or very stubborn, one might say). Even if she lost the power to make the tree fly, she intended to grow the tree itself over many years, such that the scent of its flowers would reach her master in that far-off land. Without knowing that it was the Tobiume tree, the Moriya gods moved it to their shrine as the "Life-Guiding Tree". By sheer chance, they also invited her master, Mitama Magahara, as the god of their energy revolution.

Thus, the master and the servant were coincidentally reunited. However, Mitama's intentions suddenly collided with Kanako and co. She wanted to take the tree back to her stronghold of Dazaifu, while they wanted to keep it in Gensokyo as the Life-Guiding Tree that symbolized their new age of energy. It was at that point that Mitama's friend (and fellow member of Japan's Three Great Vengeful Spirits) Tenmu Suitokuin took advantage of this, and began working to fan Mitama's distrust of the Moriyas. As a result, Mitama accepted Tenmu's cooperation to take back the Tobiume tree, and started to undertake elaborate training to carry out the drastic measures they had planned. On the day when they were to take action, An's role was to use group tactics to obstruct and repulse any nuisances, or failing that, to delay them for as long as possible.

  Himekaidou Hatate

"Hatate is a reporter, but she never goes outside for her newspaper research." ...that's how she was in the past, though. Now, she works hard at her newspaper coverage as Aya Shameimaru's rival, and received the task of patrolling the Life-Guiding Tree from Tenmu.

Her camera is a state-of-the-art kappa product that can take spirit photos, without the need for any troublesome film winding. It's very high-performance, but it has a big problem in that it's powered by electricity, which is widely known to be scarce in Gensokyo. The small, thin, modern-day model can't be used if you don't charge it on a regular basis.

And, within the Life-Guiding Tree that was emitting intense light, there was an abundance of electrical energy for some reason. She could charge it and take photos at the same time-- it was three birds with one stone. She'd never had such good luck as this. And, yes, it was three birds with one stone. Because, you see, her rival Aya had been run over by Reimu as she charged towards the Moriya Shrine.

Mitama Magahara (禍原 命廟) is the Stage 6 boss.

Concept

Mitama is based on Wikipedia:Sugawara no Michizane, a famous Japanese scholar, politician and poet. He was a talented poet and archer, and held several positions in the imperial court. As a result of a conspiracy by his political enemy, Fujiwara no Tokihira, he was demoted and sent to the city of Dazaifu, where he died. His death was followed by natural disasters and the deaths of several members of the Fujiwara clan, which was said to be caused by his vengeful spirit. To pacify his spirit, all charges against him were wiped from the records and he was deified as Tenjin, a god of scholarship that is still widely worshipped today.

Mystical Power Plant - Mitama Magahara Profile

  Magahara Mitama

The god who Kanako invited from the outside world to help with her new energy revolution plan, the true identity of the "soul living in disregard for Heaven's laws" that Saraka was hunting, a former human who became an evil spirit in the same way as Tenmu, and the master of the Tobiume tree. ---More precisely, she's a human who changed from an evil spirit to a divine spirit, due to the vast amount of faith she earned after her death. Once, she was debased by her political enemies and died an unnatural death. She then became a vengeful spirit, spreading thunderstorms and plagues across the land, and to pacify her she was worshipped as a divine being. This legend should already be known to the wise members of the audience who are well-acquainted with Japanese history.

She's known as a thunder god, but actually harbored the powers of one since the time when she was still human. No, rather, it wasn't the power of a god, but the power of the oni who were threatening the people of the capital city. In Heiankyou, the ties between oni and humans were far stronger than they are today. Humans' desires never change either, no matter what era it is. The Taoism that Toyosatomimi no Miko had pursued several hundred years prior had already been forgotten, but as far as the rulers were concerned, the power of the oni was a fair substitute for it.

The wise Mitama quickly reached the same conclusion that Miko did. If all the people who could move the country had superhuman powers like this, political revolt would be sure to follow. Yes-- the only people who could hold powers surpassing the realm of humans were those who had truly been chosen. Though she was sharp-minded, she was also rather unskillful. Because she was so unskillful, she couldn't help hardening her heart. And so, her friends and teachers who had stained their hands with the oni's power, and the "oni" that spread over the political world, were secretly eliminated by her. Mitama had been known to history as a poetic genius, well-versed in both kanshi and waka. As such, she immediately recognized the presence of the oni in the background from reading the poems her teacher wrote. It's said that using the phrase "path of oni" to refer to plots that deviate from the correct path is based from this anecdote. (Extract from "A Recycled Ten Desires Hoax Plan" by Minmei Publishing Company[1]) Later on, when she was falsely accused of crimes against the Emperor and her demotion was announced, she's said to have uttered not a single word of excuse. This was due to the guilt she felt about her acts; taking the disgrace while daring to not excuse herself for it was her own way of atoning.

After that, it was just as we all know. She unexpectedly became a god who was close to the people and well-known by them, but she had always been a scholar in the end. Thanks to her curiosity and inquisitive mind, the land of Gensokyo that Kanako told her about was very interesting to her. And so, she visited Gensokyo, and was unexpectedly reunited with the plum tree from her home--- An Yaesaki. She then began thinking that she wanted to return to Dazaifu with An, leading to the start of this incident. Gods have a wide variety of abilities, but they're not all capable of the same things. It was possibly for Mitama to use the power of thunder, but she didn't have any magical abilities that could instantly move a giant tree through space. The strategy she came up with was to use "warp drive theory", which had been forgotten due to the impossibly-enormous amount of energy required. In addition to the vast amounts of electricity that she herself could produce, she attached machine parts gathered by Tenmu's subordinates, such as hydroelectric turbines and photovoltaic panels, to the tree. These parts would produce additional power, making it possible to produce the electrical power needed for the warp drive. That was the true nature of the light shining from the tree.

Birds that fly too high will fall. A too-excessive power will bring ruin upon its user. Mitama was a trueborn poet in the end, a lover of nature's beauties, and was too kind to be a ruler. However, the familiar faith in "Lord Tenjin" that still spreads through the country even today may come from that side of her.
