Most of the characters in Over the Developed Eden are original and non-existent in the Touhou Project. Exceptions are the playable characters and the Stage 1 midboss, who are officially part of the Touhou Project.

Reimu Hakurei
Wonderful Shrine Maiden of Paradise

Reimu Hakurei
Playable Character

Species: Human
Ability: Mainly flying in the sky

The all too familiar red and white shrine maiden.
Many things from the Outside World drift ashore into Gensokyo.
Lately, that's been happening more often; despite suspecting that "y'know, something
seems weird about this?", she spent every day relaxedly drinking tapioca milk tea.
Then one day, Gensokyo suddenly became a great metropolis.
She certainly couldn't get out of dealing with that, so she went to solve the incident.

Marisa Kirisame
Ordinary Magician

Marisa Kirisame
Playable Character

Species: Human
Ability: Using magic

An ordinary magician living in Gensokyo.
She has a mania for collecting objects, so she's become exhilarated by the amount of foreign objects arriving recently.
When she woke up one day, she found that Gensokyo's landscape had become similar to that of the Outside World and the Animal Realm,
so she rushed out of her house to seize this chance to search for more rare objects.
At that time, she hardly expected how things would turn out...

Sumireko Usami
First President of the Hifuu Club

Sumireko Usami
Playable Character

Species: Human
Ability: Manipulation of psychic powers

A high school girl with psychic powers that occasionally arrives from the Outside World.
She didn't have a good opinion of the significant increase in the number of Outside World relics.
If things she could still see in the Outside World were coming to Gensokyo,
it'd be as if her dreams were being eroded by reality.

And then, the urbanization incident happened.
Having no idea what to do at times like this, she figured she'd just head towards the shrine.

Shinmyoumaru Sukuna
Descendant of the Inchlings

Shinmyoumaru Sukuna
Playable Character

Species: Inchling
Ability: Using the Miracle Mallet

A distant descendant of the legendary Issun-Boshi, and an inchling capable of wielding the Miracle Mallet.
She got in a lot of trouble thanks to said mallet, but that's all in the past now.
...Or so she thought, but recently a magical power similar to that of the mallet began to envelop Gensokyo.
She was sure that it wasn't her fault-- probably-- but it'd be bad if anyone suspected her, and she wasn't super thrilled about anyone else getting in hot water because of it.
So she set out to investigate the cause of the incident in her own way.

Yorigami Shion

The Evicted Poverty God
Shion Yorigami

Species: Poverty god
Ability: Making anyone unlucky, including herself

The most despicable and disastrous elder twin sister, who once went berserk during the Perfect Possession incident.

After spending some time making a ruckus with a celestial, she began living a quiet life somewhere in Gensokyo, but her sleeping area was redeveloped due to the current incident and she was evicted.
Not only that, but once she arrived at the shrine, she was exterminated by the shrine maiden (or whoever) that she encountered there.
Talk about horrendously unlucky.

She has the terrifying power to make anyone unlucky, including herself, once she gets serious,
but today, she was too hungry to do that.

After spending some time making a ruckus with a celestial, she began living a quiet life somewhere in Gensokyo, but her sleeping area was redeveloped due to the current incident and she was evicted.

At that time, she realized that the urbanization was taking advantage of the Urban Legend Incident, much like her Perfect Possession had,
and visited the shrine to tell the shrine maiden about this.

But once she arrived there, she was unable to tell anyone,
because she was exterminated by the shrine maiden (or whoever) that she encountered there.
Talk about horrendously unlucky.

She has the terrifying power to make anyone unlucky, including herself, once she gets serious,

Shirokane Enju

The Zashiki-warashi on an Outing
Enju Shirokane

Species: Zashiki-warashi (self-proclaimed)
Ability: Giving good luck in exchange for hiding things

A youkai who claims to have come from the Outside World.
Though she calls herself a "zashiki-warashi", a youkai known for possessing houses,
she's walking around outside normally and has travelled across the Barrier to do sightseeing in Gensokyo.

She's a type of youkai that would ordinarily bring wealth to the home it's settled down in, and warn you about any misfortune that would occur in advance.
Despite being called "youkai", they're actually more akin to gods, and she was likewise treated with utmost respect in her place of residence.
Perhaps because of this, she acts more mature than her appearance would indicate, and often displays a pompous attitude.

Yet despite this, it's in her nature to enjoy playing odd pranks, such as the ghastly acts of hiding TV remotes,
bike keys, and entangling the wires of earphones, so she poses a strange amount of nuisance.

She's also called a "remote control-hiding youkai", but she stubbornly insists that she's a zashiki-warashi.

Her true identity is the "Oshira-sama" that's long resided in the house of Himawari Mitsudaira, the incident's main perpetrator.
She came to Gensokyo in search of Himawari, who had been spirited away,
but she was turned away by the strong youkai of the Neo-Gensokyo Bakufu and failed to retrieve her.
So instead, she planned to guide one of Gensokyo's most powerful to the castle, and have that person defeat them for her.

Though she has the appearance of a young girl, she acts more mature than this would indicate, and often displays a pompous attitude.
Yet despite this, it's in her nature to enjoy playing odd pranks, such as the ghastly acts of hiding TV remotes,
bike keys, and entangling the wires of earphones, so she poses a strange amount of nuisance.

This has also led to her being called a "remote control-hiding youkai", but she stubbornly insists that she's a zashiki-warashi.

Since she's a being that both protects her house and causes huge trouble if she's treated poorly, the Mitsudaira family has always treated her with utmost respect.
But because Himawari is the only member of the family who can see and converse with her, the two of them have a friendly relationship similar to a pair of sisters.

Takebashi Mezuchi

The Urban Adaptive Kappa
Mezuchi Takebashi

Species: Kappa
Ability: Dragging people into ponds

A kappa that left the Youkai Mountain and now lives in a canal near the Human Village.
She's in an active category of kappa, preferring human meat to cucumbers.

She's a terrifying youkai that uses seductive techniques and the mysterious tools of the kappa to skillfully lure victims to the waterfront before drowning and eating them.
Staying near the village meant she'd have a healthy supply of food... or rather, humans.
This ulterior motive led her to often spent time around the Human Village, in contrast to her fellow kappa, who are said to be rather shy.

However, she ended up getting hooked on the manju buns in the Human Village, and she completely quit attacking people as a result.

On top of that, she moved over to the canal full-time, and now spends her days walking around the village while sampling various foods.
She currently sells cucumbers she cultivated with kappa technology, does repairs for broken tools and the like, and uses the money she earns to provide for herself and buy manju buns.
She's overall satisfied with her life due to not having to worry about food, and she's become rather docile nowadays.

By the way, she likes tsubu-an manju.

Music Themes

Crimson Stalker.

Shinobu Izumino (泉野 偲 Izumino Shinobu) is the Stage 3 midboss and boss.

Concept

Shinobu is based on the urban legend of the Akusara (悪皿 / あくさら), which is short for Acrobatic Sarasara (アクロバティックサラサラ). The Akusara bears a resemblance to Hasshaku-sama. She is described as a tall woman with red clothes, silky black hair (sarasara means "smooth, silky") and dark, hollow eyes. The Akusara is also said to only appear in front of men she likes, perform acrobatic manoveurs, appear on top of rooftops / buildings and follow people persistently. Additionally, Yamahime (lit. mountain princess) are described as being beautiful women with long hair, who live in the mountains. Some stories describe them as being exceptionally tall, which mirrors the stories of Akusara / Hasshaku-sama.

Name

Her first name "Shinobu" is derived from Mt. Shinobu (信夫山 Shinobu-yama) located in Fukushima Prefecture. The kanji used for her name means "recollection".
Her last name roughly means "spring field".

Izumino Shinobu

The Eight-Foot-Tall Red Shadow
Shinobu Izumino

Species: Yamahime
Ability: Following someone everywhere

An emotionally unstable youkai woman living on Youkai Mountain.
She's a beautiful lady with the physique of a model, and flashy attire that most certainly doesn't match with the scenery of the mountain forest.
Her appearance is nearly identical to that of an ordinary human, but she possesses extraordinary physical and supernatural abilities, and is capable of moving through hills and fields at ridiculous speeds.

Because she lives all alone in the mountains, she's very lonely and prone to falling in love,
falling head over heels in love with any human (and sometimes youkai) that passes by, regardless of gender.
She's very tenacious, and once she sees someone, she'll follow them around everywhere, making bold yet roundabout advances toward them.
This malicious stalking eventually leads the other party's mind and body to be torn to shreds.

As the above may indicate, getting involved with her is an ill-advised move, and basically everyone on Youkai Mountain shuns her.

To make matters worse, if nobody visits her for a long time and her loneliness reaches its peak,
she will sometimes come down from the mountain in search of a soulmate (victim) who will accept her love.
This time, she heard rumors of a charming human having arrived in Gensokyo, and went down to the Forest of Magic to court them.
In the process, she found new prey, and has ended up see-sawing between two loves all on her own.

Startling people to death

Shuki Juujigahara (十字ヶ原 朱器 Juujigahara Shuki) is the Stage 4 midboss and the Phantom Stage midboss.

Concept

Shuki, like her master, is based on folklore of the kamehime that lived in Inawashiro Castle of Fukushima Prefecture. After several suspicious events that ultimately led to the castle chamberlain's death, a large nyuudou is said to have been seen fetching water outside, and it transformed into a large mujina upon being slain.

Additionally Shuki incorporates several elements of a youkai called Shunobon (lit. "scarlet tray"). Shunobon is said to be a terrifying demon with red skin, a single horn, a terrifying smile (Shuki uses a tray in her spellcard that is modeled after Shunobon's face) and spiky hair. They also love scaring people to death and the gnashing of their teeth sounds like thunder. Shunobon are considered to be servants of the kamehime.

Name

Her first name "Shuki" means "vermillion container".

Jujigahara Shuki

Mischevious Youkai Maid
Shuki Juujigahara

Species: Great mujina
Ability: Startling people to death

A cheerful youkai who serves as Princess Yamou's close advisor, as well as her castle's resident maid.
She's skilled at transformation, particularly when using it to frighten whoever she can. A very youkai-esque youkai.
In her case, however, she keeps relentlessly startling her victim just when they've dropped their guard, and continues driving them into a corner until they expire.
As such, she's extremely dangerous. The fact that she only thinks of it as a harmless prank makes her even harder to deal with.

At the same time, she's hopelessly smitten with her master, Princess Yamou, and spends every waking moment trying to bolster her brand.
She even murdered a noble who mocked her master once in the past, but her master was dreadfully taken aback by this. Kind of a meathead.
She doesn't care much about understanding the current incident, and only thinks of it as an opportunity to advertise the Princess's charisma and adorable looks throughout all of Gensokyo.

Also, she's the one who goaded the Princess into talking in such a weird way.

Mischevious Youkai Maid
Shuki Juujigahara

Species: Great mujina
Ability: Startling people to death

A youkai who serves as a maid of Koujoukaku, a mansion located at the bottom of Misty Lake.

Today is the day that her master, Princess Yamou, is to meet with her stepsister.
As she was eagerly getting ready, she heard a commotion coming from the lake.
The humans (and inchling) behind this commotion were the ones who had recently overthrown the Neo-Gensokyo Bakufu.
"Could it be that these humans are also happy about the Princess reuniting with her sister...?"
She thought so for a moment, but of course that was impossible, so she decided to kill them.

Maki Minawashiro (水縄城 万亀 Minawashiro Maki), introduced in-game as Princess Yamou (病悩御前 (やもうごぜん) Yamou-gozen), is the Stage 4 boss.

Concept

Maki is largely based on the kamehime (亀姫, lit. "turtle princess") said to have lurked in Inawashiro Castle of Fukushima Prefecture (also known as Kamegashiro, lit. "turtle castle"). She also incorporates elements of Kamehime, the real-world daughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
She and the Stage 5 boss, Nueko, represent the crane and turtle mentioned in the lyrics of the Japanese children's song "Kagome, Kagome"; in particular, they parallel an urban legend about how the song's lyrics are coded directions to the location of the Tokugawa clan's legendary buried treasure, with the directions involving a turtle and crane statue located at Nikkō Tōshōgū.

Name

Her surname Minawashiro is comprised of kanji meaning "water rope castle", and is a pun on the real-world location of Inawashiro.
Her first name, Maki, is comprised of kanji meaning "ten thousand" and "turtle", and is based on a Japanese legend that states that tortoises/turtles live for ten-thousand years.

Her title, "Yamou-Gozen", literally means "young lady of sickness". It is a play on Kamehime's historical title, Kanou-Gozen (加納御前, "young lady of Kanou domain"), and "Mount Yamou" (lit. "sickness mountain"), a historical name for the volcanic Mt. Bandai.

Princess Yamou (Minawashiro Maki)

Demon Princess of the High Tower
Princess Yamou (Maki Minawashiro)

Species: Great youkai (self-proclaimed)
Ability: Inconveniencing people

A self-willed, self-serving youkai who lives at the bottom of the Misty Lake.
She's an extremely powerful youkai who was once feared for controlling the weather, becoming gigantic, spewing poison gas and so on,
but after getting beat up once, she cooped herself up in a local castle without permission and ruled over humans from the shadows instead.

But a war between humans soon broke out, the castle was burnt to the ground, and she was forced to move into Gensokyo, where she built a new castle beneath the lake.
That castle is the Koujoukaku ("Inlet Castle Tower").
She uses the Koujoukaku as her main base in Gensokyo, saving up money while running a real estate firm for youkai.
Her business was relatively successful and she was able to live without inconvenience, but she hadn't abandoned her ambition to regain her former glory in the Outside World.

It was then that an easygoing human showed up along with a few allies,
saying that "we're going to take over the Outside World, so lend us your castle and help".
The human seemed rather dim, but she apparently had a plan. The Princess figured she could make use of them.
Once they established their "Neo-Gensokyo Bakufu" or whatever, she'd take over and make it her own!

Her one miscalculation was that she never even imagined that anyone from Gensokyo would intervene.

Nueko Mitsurugi (御剣 縫重子 Mitsurugi Nueko) is the Stage 5 midboss and boss.

Concept

Nueko is based on the golem, an animate being made of clay originating in Jewish folklore. She is specifically created from the rubble of Aizuwakamatsu Castle (also known as Tsurugashiro, lit. "crane castle"), which served as a major Edo-period stronghold for the Tokugawa shogunate and was eventually destroyed in the Battle of Aizu.
She and the Stage 4 boss, Maki, represent the crane and turtle mentioned in the lyrics of the Japanese children's song "Kagome, Kagome"; in particular, they parallel an urban legend about how the song's lyrics are coded directions to the location of the Tokugawa clan's legendary buried treasure, with the directions involving a turtle and crane statue located at Nikkō Tōshōgū.

Name

Her surname Mitsurugi is comprised of kanji meaning "honorable sword", and was chosen for its similarity to the phrase tsuruki (鶴亀, lit. "crane and turtle"). Her first name, Nueko, is comprised of kanji meaning "stitch," "layer" and "child".

Species: Artificial youkai
Ability: Protecting castles

An artifical youkai created via suspicious methods, meant to protect Her Lordship.
She possesses a body reconstructed from the rubble of a burned-down castle, and won't break all that easily.
And as long as the spell doesn't wear off, she can come back to life as many times as she likes.

She might look like an expressionless, emotionless robot at first glance,
but her heart burns with the desire for revenge against a former enemy that she can no longer remember clearly.
This is because her personality was influenced by the castle used for her raw materials, as well as the lingering wills of the people who waged battle there.
She possesses an almost terrifyingly hot spirit, and will even readily sacrifice herself to fulfill her mission.
...Mostly because she can regenerate infinitely, but y'know.

She also has a limiter attached to prevent her power from going berserk, but she can deactivate it by herself.
So it's fairly pointless.

Himawari Mitsudaira (光平 向日葵 Mitsudaira Himawari) is the Stage 6 midboss, Stage 6 boss and Extra Stage midboss.

Concept

Himawari is a young modern-day itako, a type of female spirit medium in Japan. As the game's final boss, she represents the leaders of the Tokugawa shogunate.

During Stage 6, she wields a replica of the Ark of the Covenant in the form of a bow. This is inspired by urban legends and conspiracy theories about the Tokugawa clan's legendary buried treasure. According to such theories, the lyrics of the song "Kagome, Kagome" indicate Nikkō Tōshōgū's location at the center of a hexagram (a kagome pattern) drawn between major temples built by the Tokugawa, followed by a statue on the shrine grounds that includes a crane and turtle. Certain niche speculation draws further links between the hexagram and the Star of David, as well as the statue's superficial resemblance to the Ark of the Covenant, and posits that the Tokugawas were linked to one of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel.

Name

Her surname Mitsudaira is comprised of kanji that mean "light" and "flat", and is likely in reference to the Matsudaira clan, of which Tokugawa Ieyasu was the chieftain. Her first name, Himawari, means "sunflower".

The Greatest Azusa Archer of Heretical Teachings

Himawari Mitsudaira

Species: Human
Ability: Channeling ancestral spirits
Breaking down walls (Holy Ark)

A girl worshiped by youkai as "Her Lordship". In reality, she's a human with spiritual powers who came from the Outside World.

She has talent for what's colloquially known as shamanism: she's able to hear the voices of things like dead spirits
in the afterlife or faraway gods, and can have them possess her body to deliver their words.
Those around her recognized her talent, and she trained to be an itako from a young age.

With that said, though, the fantasy-denying Outside World was home to few humans who believed in her power.
Most dismissed her spiritual ability as the ramblings of a crazy girl or as cheap tricks, refusing to accept her.
This reality was tremendously dissatisfying to her, and was enough to lead her to the conclusion that the world itself had gone wrong.

One day, as she was engaged in her usual training, a mysterious voice spoke directly into her mind.

"I am your ancestor, Tosho-Daigongen. This world is filled with suffering. You shall use your power to save it!
You shall take back the era of tranquility lost in the revolution, and build a Pure Land in this world..."

Due to her overconfidence in her own power, she became convinced that "this must be guidance from her glorious ancestor!",
and ran out from her house to visit Gensokyo without giving it much pause for thought.

There, she met a tengu who called herself the "Chancellor", and discovered the Tokugawa clan's lost buried treasure-- the Holy Ark-- under her instruction.
With its power, she would destroy the Barrier, obtain the lost power of fantasy, and rule over the Outside World...
That was their "Neo-Gensokyo Bakufu Plan".

The noble cause of returning happiness to the populace, in order to correct the history that had gone so wrong.

"No, that doesn't matter to me at all.
If I can just convince all those people who treated me like a con artist, that's all I need."

Thus, she began working as the "Lord" of the Neo-Gensokyo Bakufu.
This plan would soon be crushed to dust by Enju, who came to search for her, and the incident resolver she found.

*Holy Ark's ability: Breaking down walls
An item said to have been created by an ancient shaman in response to the voice of God.
Only usable by humans with high spiritual affinity, who can hear the voice of the god dwelling within it.
It holds the power to break down any wall of any kind.
As long as its wielder views something as a "wall", it can affect anything-- even things like distance or abstract concepts.
During his time as a mortal human, Tosho-Daigongen is said to have been chosen by this secret treasure, and used it to make his era of tranquility a reality.

In the current incident, she shone the Ark's light to destroy "the wall between raw materials and finished products", transforming the plants throughout Gensokyo into modern buildings.
However, it was only a replica created via an application of the Urban Legend Incident. The only buildings it could create were papier-mache fabrications.
And while the original Ark could've destroyed the barrier in seven days, the replica took seven times that amount of time.
Finally, it cracked under the strain and was destroyed. Talk about an overload.

While she initially acted out of defiance towards the world at large, she eventually came to lament the world's state in a much more seriously-considered way.

"Gensokyo is a good place, though. Their hearts are bountiful. Nobody doubts my power, or things they can't see.
But... that's not enough to reach my goal. Because nothing in the Outside World has changed at all.
Things out there in that materialism-poisoned world are just drifting along today, like they do every other day.
It has to change. There's got to be a way to improve things, to make things richer."

But there isn't much I can do by myself. So, I'll gather more friends.
Even that girl who manipulated me into causing the incident is sure to help out, if I just talk to her.
I'll ask her to come to the Outside World with me, and maybe give me some studying tips while I'm at it...

So she thought, as she set off for the skyscraper that stood atop the ruins of the shrine.

Kagami Ashina (葦名 鏡海 Ashina Kagami), introduced in-game by the honorific title Seijoubou-Kyoukai (正条坊鏡海 (せいじょうぼうきょうかい) Seijoubou-Kyoukai), is the Extra Stage boss.

Concept

Kagami is based on Tenkai, a Tendai monk who served as advisor to several Tokugawa shoguns, including Tokugawa Ieyasu, and is said to have made numerous decisions regarding politics and architecture during their reign. Like other such priests who had a large impact on politics, he is at times referred to as a "Chancellor in Black Robes" (黒衣の宰相). Certain theories linking the Tokugawa clan's buried treasure to the song "Kagome, Kagome" interpret parts of the song's lyrics as veiled references to Tenkai's name (eg. linking the "crane and turtle" to the kanji 天 (ten, "sky") and 海 (kai, "sea").
In addition, Kagami incorporates real-world speculation about one of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel having migrated to Japan, which is sometimes linked to the above theories via details such as the kagome hexagram's resemblance to the Star of David.

Name

Her surname Ashina is taken from the real-world Ashina clan from which Tenkai was born, and is spelt with kanji meaning "reed" and "name". Her first name Kagami is comprised of kanji meaning "mirror" and "sea".

Her honorific title, Seijoubou-Kyoukai, is a reference to Tenkai's title Nankoubou-Tenkai (南光坊天海, lit. "Tenkai, the priest of southern light"), and can be translated as "Kyoukai, the priest of clear, straight lines". "Kyoukai" is spelt with the same kanji as her given name, "Kagami".

Gematria Master in Black Robes
Seijoubou Kyoukai (real name: Kagami Ashina)

Species: Long-nose tengu
Ability: Manipulating numerals

Once, far across the ocean, there was a tribe of people who were skilled at magic that manipulated numbers.
It was the fearsome skill to convert anything and everything into numerals, then manipulate those numerals to
interfere with fate and various phenomena, and ultimately even grant life to inanimate objects.
They once boasted enough might to construct a vast kingdom, but they fell in battle against forces that worshiped another god, and their people were scattered throughout the world.

Amongst those ancient people were a few who fled to the far East, and she is their last living descendant.
Her tribe inherited a particular object, which they brought with them to this new country. Namely, the thing that would later become the Tokugawas' secret treasure... the "Ark of the Covenant".
The Ark was essentially a magical computer, and could be used as a weapon to perform vast magical calculations that a mere human would find impossible.
A bunrei of the god they worshiped was sealed inside of it, and only the few humans who could hear his voice were able to use the Ark.

By finding humans with great spiritual affinity and giving the Ark to them, they were able to rule over history.
The military commander who ended the Sengoku era and built an era of tranquility spanning 300 years was one such person.

If they avoided directly standing at the top, they could avoid various risks that came with it.
It may seem cunning and roundabout at first glance, but this was another piece of knowledge they'd obtained throughout their history of hardship.

However, after that long, long era of tranquility, the Ark's power was gradually forgotten, and their clan began to wither.
The Ark wasn't used once during the war of the Restoration, and was ultimately lost during the chaos of battle.
Finally, after a fierce battle with the Imperial army, the clan died out completely save for her.

As the sole survivor, she thought:
"I'll crush the 'order' that they've built since then, and revise the course of history that's gone wrong. That's the greatest mourning I can offer my clan."
With this rather dangerous idea in mind, her strong will transformed her into something inhuman.

She snuck into Gensokyo, and while doing various miscellaneous tasks such as accounting as a desk clerk in tengu society, she stayed on the lookout for a chance to resurface.
Then, the Urban Legend Incident occurred. She secretly spread rumors of the "buried Tokugawa treasure", and thereby succeeded in manifesting the lost Ark in Gensokyo.
But now that she'd become a tengu, she couldn't use the Ark.
So she took Himawari Mitsudaira, the convenient itako that she'd coincidentally found, eloquently lured her into Gensokyo,
and venerated her as "the one who can hear the voice of Lord Gongen".

In the end, her ambition was halted by Gensokyo's native residents.
But ever the sore loser, she built a giant tower in Gensokyo's biggest power spot-- that is, the Hakurei Shrine-- and tried to take over Gensokyo.
Still, she herself had the feeling that this plan would never work out.
So why did she resort to such folly?
Perhaps it was because she wanted someone to deny the "mission" she had been burdened with.

Chifune Osakabe (長壁 千富袮 Osakabe Chifune), introduced in-game as Princess Tenju (天樹の方 (てんじゅのかた) Tenju no Kata), is the Phantom Stage boss.

Concept

Chifune is based on Osakabe-hime, a youkai woman who inhabits Himeji Castle.
She's said to be a recluse who hates meeting people, thus she prefers spending her time hidden away, but will come down once a year to meet with
the castle's lord and tell him the castle's fortune for the next year.

In some accounts, Osakabe-hime is stated to be the sister of Kamehime, a similar youkai living in Inawashiro Castle who acts as a basis for Maki Minawashiro.

Name

Her first name, Chifune (千富袮) roughly translates to "thousand wealth shrine". The "ne" () kanji is considered a "phantom kanji" (JIS kanji of unknown origin and which have no discernable pronunciation) but it has been given meanings such as "ancestral shrine" or "embroidery".
Osakabe (長壁) translates to "long-wall", and is derived from her the name of her basis "Osakabe-hime" (長壁姫 lit. "Lady Longwall").

In terms of her nickname, "Tenju" (天樹) translates to "sky tree". It's a reference to the Tokyo Skytree, a broadcasting and observation tower located in Sumida, Tokyo, and the tallest structure in Japan.
"Kata" () is an honorific term meaning "lady" or "princess".

Lady of the Most Beautiful Castle in Japan

Princess Tenju (real name: Chifune Osakabe)

Species: Vampire
Ability: Inhabiting castles

A youkai living in a famous castle in the Outside World (of her own accord).
Local rumors state that she has powerful magical abilities, deceiving and toying with humans who enter the castle.
She is a sociable individual who has a wide influence in the youkai community.
Plenty of youkai in Gensokyo were acquainted with her, and would exchange letters with her.

One such acquaintance is Princess Yamou (aka Maki).
They had sworn an oath of sisterhood with one another, but then she was informed that
her adorable little sister had been badly hurt by a violent human. That in of itself was not important,
the real problem lied in the appearance of the Tokugawa's buried treasure: the Ark of the Covenant.

To be frank, Princess Tenju is the descendant of a warlord who unified the country with the Ark's power.
After the warlord's death, the Ark was divided into several parts that were scattered around the country, causing turmoil at every turn.
Feeling responsible as a member of the warlord's family, she secretly began to gather the Ark pieces and destroy them with her own hands.
The price for this was that she became a youkai after the boundary between humans and youkai was shattered,
and from there, it took another hundred years to destroy all the pieces...supposedly.

However, little did she know that a new Ark had appeared within Gensokyo.
In a panic, she went into Gensokyo to single-handedly destroy the Ark,
but by that time, Gensokyo's Ark had already been destroyed. There's still a time lag with written letters, after all.

And so, she decided to enjoy sightseeing in Gensokyo while toying with the humans who attacked Yamou.
