Notes

  1. Preta: a Buddhist hungry ghost. Read in Japanese as gaki (餓鬼). Those reborn as a preta are always hungry but cannot enjoy food or drink.
  2. Preta Realm (餓鬼道; Gakido): one of the Six Realms of Rebirth (六道; Rokudo) in Buddhism. This realm is based on possessiveness and desire, and is considered to have the third-lowest rank of the six realms. The "Scroll of Preta" (餓鬼草紙) is a Japanese national treasure.
  3. The Ten Kings (十王; Ju-ou): the judges of the afterlife in Buddhism. They decide the realms that people will be reborn in, based on their past karma.
  4. A possible reference to the play Oguri Hangan ("Judge Oguri"). The titular character is murdered, but returned to life in a preta-like state and in the end is fully revived.
  5. Hell Realm (地獄道; Jigoku-do): one of the Six Realms of Rebirth (六道; Roku-dou) in Buddhism. This realm is based on hatred, and is considered to have the lowest rank of the six realms.
  6. 由旬 (yojana in Sanskrit, yujun in Japanese): a unit of length in early India. 1 yojana is the distance that the imperial army could advance in 1 day; about 10-15 km. 200 yojanas is the width of the flames in the seventh hot hell in Buddhist cosmology. It's also the width of Yuyuko's garden.
  7. 業風 (gofu) are the torturous winds of hell that blow against sinners as punishment for the negative karma they have accumulated in their life.
  8. 閃 can mean "flash (light)"/"flash (sudden) or "brandish". 影 can mean "shadow" but it's also used to refer to phantoms. In The Grimoire of Marisa, it is revealed that Youmu's phantom half, Myon, shoots the large bubble bullets for the easy/normal version (and presumably the hard/lunatic versions) of this spell card.
  9. 畜趣: refers to the Animal Realm (畜生道; Chikusho-do), which is one of the Six Realms of Rebirth (六道; Roku-dou) in Buddhism. This realm is based on stupidity and prejudice, and is considered to have the second-lowest rank of the six realms.
  10. Asura: refers to the Asura Realm (修羅道; Shura-do), which is one of the Six Realms of Rebirth (六道; Roku-dou) in Buddhism. This realm is based on jealousy, struggle, combat, and rationality, and is considered to have the third-highest rank of the six realms.
  11. 人界: Human Realm (人間道; Ningen-do): one of the Six Realms of Rebirth (六道; Roku-dou) in Buddhism. This realm is based on passion, desire, and doubt, and is considered to have the second-highest rank of the six realms. It is seen as one of the more conductive realms to achieving enlightenment.
  12. 大悟 (taigo or daigo) means disillusioning oneself completely and coming together with the ultimate truth. 顕晦 (kenkai) means "appearing (顕(あら)わす; arawasu) and disappearing (晦(くら)む; kuramu)".
  13. 俗諦常住 means taking social truths exactly as the eternal truth. "Human God" (人神) is a person worshiped as a God before or after death. Human Gods are not only good people, but also evil people who have overcome their curse.
  14. Deva Realm (天上道; Tenjo-do): one of the Six Realms of Rebirth (六道; Roku-dou) in Buddhism. This realm is based on bliss and pride, and is the highest rank of the six realms. Deva (天人; tenjin): a being who lives in the Deva Realm. Devas have very long lives but are not immortal. Five signs of weakness are shown before their death.
  15. Seven "hakus" () make up the most basic properties of the soul in Taoism. In Taoism, it is believed that there is a period where the body contains only hakus between losing the three kons and death. This is an unstable state due to the lack of reason, so the seven hakus are hated (七魄忌諱). However, no one could live without the seven hakus, because they are important base components of the soul.
  16. 三魂七魄 (three kons and seven hakus) are the components of soul in Taoism. The three kons control mental activity (reason), and seven hakus control physical activity.
