Notes

  1. Preta: a Buddhist hungry ghost. Read in Japanese as gaki (餓鬼). Those reborn as a preta are always hungry but cannot enjoy food or drink.
  2. 餓鬼の断食 (Gaki no danjiki) (lit. 'preta's fasting'): An idiom that refers to someone performing an action that they already ought to by default, but acting as if they're going out of their way to do something special or praise-worthy.
  3. The Grimoire of Marisa/Youmu Konpaku's Spell Cards
  4. Preta Realm (餓鬼道; Gakido): one of the Six Realms of Rebirth (六道; Rokudo) in Buddhism. This realm is based on possessiveness and desire, and is considered to have the third-lowest rank of the six realms. The "Scroll of Preta" (餓鬼草紙) is a Japanese national treasure.
  5. The Ten Kings (十王; Ju-ou): the judges of the afterlife in Buddhism. They decide the realms that people will be reborn in, based on their past karma.
  6. A possible reference to the play Oguri Hangan ("Judge Oguri"). The titular character is murdered, but returned to life in a preta-like state and in the end is fully revived.
  7. Hell Realm (地獄道; Jigokudo): one of the Six Realms of Rebirth (六道; Rokudo) in Buddhism. This realm is based on hatred, and is considered to have the lowest rank of the six realms.
  8. 由旬 (yojana in Sanskrit, yujun in Japanese): a unit of length in early India. 1 yojana is the distance that the imperial army could advance in 1 day; about 10-15 km. 200 yojanas is the width of the flames in the seventh hot hell in Buddhist cosmology. It's also the width of Yuyuko's garden.
  9. 業風 (gofu) are the torturous winds of hell that blow against sinners as punishment for the negative karma they have accumulated in their life.
  10. 閃 can mean "flash (light)"/"flash (sudden) or "brandish (slash in this case)". 影 can mean shadow, or an illusion. 閃影 itself means "the instantaneous appearance of a shadow", so it could be taken to mean an afterimage.
  11. The spell card may be referencing the Kusanagi no Tsurugi. 神剣 (shinken lit. "divine sword"/"god sword") is a common name for 草薙の剣 (Kusanagi no Tsurugi lit. "grass-cutting sword"), one of the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan. The sword is said to have come from the slain body of Yamata no Orochi. 斬 means "to cut (slash)" but specifically with the intention to dismember, decapitate, and kill. The god Susanoo obtained the Kusanagi no Tsurugi after decapitating all of Orochi's heads and tails.
  12. 畜趣: refers to the Animal Realm (畜生道; Chikushodo), which is one of the Six Realms of Rebirth (六道; Rokudo) in Buddhism. Being reborn in this realm is punishment for stupidity, prejudice, sloth, or lack of faith and is considered to be the second-lowest ranking of the six realms.
  13. Asura: refers to the Asura Realm (修羅道; Shurado), which is one of the Six Realms of Rebirth (六道; Roku-dou) in Buddhism. Being reborn in this realm is the result of jealousy, aggressive nature, or irrationality and is considered to have the third-highest rank of the six realms. Asuras are multi-limbed (usually multi-headed as well) deity-like beings in Buddhism that can be either benevolent or wrathful.
  14. Likely a reference to the idiom 修羅の妄執 (Shura no moushuu) ('Asura's obsession'), referring to the Asura Realm's residents' persistent attachment to the present world and the violent, negative emotions associated therewith.
  15. 人界: Human Realm (人間道; Ningendo): one of the Six Realms of Rebirth (六道; Rokudo) in Buddhism. This realm is based on passion, desire, and doubt, and is considered to have the second-highest rank of the six realms. It is seen as one of the easier realms to achieve enlightenment in. In Buddhism, the main goal of humans is to achieve enlightenment.
  16. 大悟 (taigo or daigo) means "great wisdom" or "enlightenment". 顕晦 (kenkai) means "appearing (顕(あら)わす; arawasu) and disappearing (晦(くら)む; kuramu)".
  17. 俗諦常住 (constancy of conventional truth) is a Buddhist term exclusive to the Chinese Tiantai and Japanese Tendai sects.
In many variants of Buddhism, 真諦 (ultimate truth / paramārtha-satya) refers to the true, underlying state of all things as illusory or empty, and the state of emptiness attained in the process of reaching enlightenment. 俗諦 ("conventional truth" / samvrti-satya) refers to axioms and teachings used in the material world to convey concepts with others (including descriptions of "ultimate truth" itself). Many sects accept "conventional truth" as a provisional means by which to understand the true nature of the universe, despite how its nature ultimately surpasses such descriptions.
In Tendai Buddhism, however, conventional truth is viewed as an equally valid and 'constant' part of the ultimate truth.
  18. A "human god" (人神) is a person worshiped as a god before or after death (most bodhisattvas and buddhas could be considered to be in this category). One could say that for a human to achieve enlightenment (nirvana) is to become a god themselves.
  19. Heaven Realm (天上道; Tenjo-do): one of the Six Realms of Rebirth (六道; Roku-dou) in Buddhism. This inhabitants (deva) of this realm are blissful and proud. Heaven Realm is the highest ranking of the conventional six realms. Deva (天人; tenjin): a divine being who lives in the Heaven Realm. Deva have very long lives but are not immortal. Five signs of weakness are shown before their death.
  20. Seven "hakus" () make up the most basic properties of the soul in Taoism. In Taoism, it is believed that there is a period where the body contains only hakus between losing the three kons and death. This is an unstable state due to the lack of reason, so the seven hakus are hated (七魄忌諱). However, no one could live without the seven hakus, because they are important base components of the soul. It is worth mentioning that 天界 (Heaven Realm) is a Taoist term that describes a world in which immortals and sages lived. It later became synonymous with the Buddhist 天上道 (Heaven Realm)/天国 (Heaven) in which it then became to mean "Deva Realm".
  21. 三魂七魄 (three kons and seven hakus) are the components of the soul in Taoism. The three kons control mental activity (reason), and the seven hakus control physical activity.
  22. 天神 ("heavenly god") is an uncommon synonym for 天人 (deva). It's also a Shinto term for a god who resides in the skies or who controls the skies.
