Terms

Throughout the game, various terms appear frequently. It's a bit troublesome to explain every term in each scenario, so they're here. One should be familiarized with these terms before reading any scripts. The scenario translations are currently inconsistent in usage of terms (whether the translated or original Japanese should be used). Eventually, this will all be sorted out.

Term Definition

彼岸(ひがん)
Higan

The equinoctial period, or the equinox itself.
The game takes place during the spring equinoctial week.
Komachi ferries souls to the equinox. As one would imagine, it looks like a glittering horizon.

彼岸花(ひがんばな)
Higanbana

Spider lily. Poisonous flower. Blooms during the autumn equinox.
For more information, see this site.

彼岸桜(ひがんざくら)
Higanzakura

Cherry trees which flower early, around the spring equinox.

無縁の塚(むえんのつか)
Muen no Tsuka
OR
無縁塚(むえんづか)
Muenzuka

Literally meaning something similar to "Mound of the Nameless".
Nameless, in this case, is referring to unknown souls.
The final battles take place here. It's filled with Higanbana and purple cherry blossoms.

三途の川(さんずのがわ)
Sanzu no Gawa

The Japanese Buddhist equivalent of the River Styx.
The river where the dead are ferried to Higan.

鈴蘭(すずらん)
Suzuran

Lily of the valley. A slightly poisonous flower.
Medicine Melancholy nicknames the suzuran "Su-san".
(It's definitely more than a pain to always type lily of the valley in translations.)
