Rika (里香) is an engineer that appears in Stage 1 and the Extra Stage of Story of Eastern Wonderland, where she creates a large number of monsters and starts hanging around the Hakurei Shrine while Reimu Hakurei is away. The reason for and method of creating all of these monsters and Bakebake isn't clear at all.

Flower Tank
The Flower Tank (ふらわ~戦車 Furawa~ sensha) is a tank created by Rika. It was used on Stage 1 to fight Reimu, and Rika thought it was enough to defeat her. The tank has red caterpillar tracks with a grey turret; the turret is round with a yin-yang mark painted on the top, along with many leaves hang out from the back of the turret. Vines also hang around the main cannon.
Evil Eye Sigma
The Evil Eye Sigma (Σ) (イビルアイ∑ ibiruai sigma) is a flying tank created by Rika. It was used on the Extra Stage to fight Reimu, and Rika again thought it was enough to defeat her. It appears to have one big eye with a red iris and black eyelids. It has two large purple wings, a halo, and two large tentacles. Below there is something green (leaves?). On the lower eyelid, there is a red Sigma (∑), the eighteenth letter of the Greek alphabet.
Other
Rika also has created the Stage 1 midboss of Story of Eastern Wonderland. She said that everything on the first stage was created by her, so this tank is obviously hers. She also seems to have create the cannons on the same stage with the appearance of yin-yangs.

Character Basis

Name

Her name is Rika (里香). The kanji in her name can mean "village incense". With different kanji, "Rika" can also refer to "science" in Japanese.

Design

In Story of Eastern Wonderland's official art, Rika has brown eyes, long brown hair in two braids, wears a white shirt with a purple bow beneath its collar and she holds a piece of chalk in her left hand. In the Extra Stage, she has purple (brown?) eyes, long purple (brown?) hair in two braids, white horns and wears a strange red hat. She also wears a purple shirt with a red ribbon in front.

Story

Story of Eastern Wonderland

During Stage 1 of Story of Eastern Wonderland, she attacks Reimu with tanks that she has created, but is defeated quickly. Later, during the Extra Stage, she attempts to lure Reimu into a trap and reveals that she was the one who created the monsters in the first place, and attacks the Shrine Maiden with a flying tank called the Evil Eye Σ.

Additional Information

  • Rika was the first boss ever in a Touhou shooting game, as well as the first Extra Stage boss.
  • Rika said in Story of Eastern Wonderland that she created the Bakebake on the first stage of Story of Eastern Wonderland, but it's unknown if the bakebake in other games (as well as the entire of Story of Eastern Wonderland) were also created by her.
  • Rika is the only character in the series to pilot a vehicle during a boss fight - tanks that she herself constructed. This also shows that she's the only character in the whole series to fight without any abilities or magic whatsoever. This could therefore make her the weakest character in the gaming series, yet tough.

Fandom

  • Although her sprite appears vaguely in Stage 1, fans who draw her commonly depict her wearing brown pants.
  • Rika looks similar and has a similar name to Rikako Asakura. These two are compared and speculated be the same character, or related.
  • It is considered by many for Rika to be the most difficult Extra boss in the Touhou Series.
  • Some fans tend to see the Evil Eye Σ as the "king" of all the Evil Eyes.
