Music List

Title Screen
Beyond the Sealed Door Wanwan

This is the title screen theme.

As a kid I wasn't allowed to go up the stairs to the rooftop at my school.
Deliberately sealed-off places like that get kids really interested.
Although I didn't go up there myself.

Stage 1 theme
Backwater Paradise Wanwan

This is the first stage theme.

It's a song with a "the journey begins!" sort of feeling, as always.
I've always wondered why the heroines set out on a journey all of their own accord.
Well I guess the story would never begin otherwise, so there's no way around it.

Stage 1 Boss - Yuyuko Saigyouji's theme
Sakurachill Blossom Snowflakes Blooming in Profusion ~ Sakurachill Blossom [1] Wanwan

This is the theme of Yuyuko Saigyouji.

She's really mastermind-like, isn't she? No matter how you look at it.
Actually, though, this time the battle's all just a test she's giving you.
Speaking of which, I feel like I haven't gotten full marks.

Stage 2 theme
Bridge of Qliphoth Wanwan

This is the second stage theme.

It became a song that'd sound fitting for wandering into a mysterious dungeon.
That tree may seem like driftwood, but it's actually a girl's body, you know.
...You just thought of something indecent, didn't you?

Stage 2 Boss - Hatsuna Magatsuji's theme
Pretty Apricot Wanwan

This is the theme of Hatsuna Magatsuji.

It's just a little bit like our previous work. I aimed to make it cute and overflowing with youth.
I Googled "apricot", wondering if there was anything interesting to read, and apparently they're also called karamomo (Tang peaches). Maybe this is what that "I am An, and Yet I am Not" thing meant?[2]

Stage 3 theme
Etheric Frosty Sea Wanwan

This is the third stage theme.

It's a song depicting a journey through freezing cold, it seems.
"Hoarfrost" is a phenomenon where frost sticks to trees, making them look white.
They doesn't necessarily have to be pure white, though. So icy! So cold!

Stage 3 Boss - Ruri's theme
Soul Eater from the Abyss Wanwan

This is the theme of Ruri.

I'm sure I'm wrong, but doesn't it sound really cold to be preserved cryogenically?
I think I'd much rather go under a kotatsu and eat ice cream.
Kotatsu that lure you into that sort of careless lifestyle must themselves be soul eaters!

Stage 4 theme
Surpass the Gate of the Silver Key Wanwan

This is the stage 4 theme.

Now that I think about it, I was just thinking that I didn't make enough swing-style songs,
but I succeeded in giving this one a rich, easy-going atmosphere.
This rhythm is also called "pyonko-bushi". Ribbit ribbit.[3]

Stage 4 boss - Suitenguu no Himemiko's theme
The Princess who was Erased from History Wanwan

This is the theme of Suitenguu no Himemiko.

There's probably a lot of people who'd think of Emperor Antoku first when it comes to the ocean and early deaths.
I feel like the rhythm of this song has a somber yet childish sound to it.
As usual, I didn't have a biwa sound source. So much for that.

Stage 5 theme
The Shangri-La Palace Floating in the Deep Sea Wanwan

This is the stage 5 theme.

The title probably gives away what the song is like, but that's how it is.
"Sinking through the air" has a somehow new and attractive quality to it,
but "floating in the sea" sounds somehow ordinary... don't you think?

Stage 5 boss - Takenouchi no Tarumi's theme
World Yamataizer Wanwan

This is Takenouchi no Tarumi's theme.

She's pretty war god-like, so I made a war god-like song(?).
When I think of combining robots, I remember the sentai series I saw when I was little.
I can look at them from a different viewpoint than I used to, so they're interesting in a different way now.

Stage 6 theme
R'lyeh, the Capital of the Dead Wanwan

This is the stage 6 theme.

For the final stage, I made a song that'll raise the excitement some more.
When I think of capital cities, I picture the Mediterranean more than I picture Kyoto.
That mental image may have ended up in the song to an extent, too.

Stage 6 boss - Yamatoyo no Momohime's theme
Prayer Player Fantasy Nation Daybreak ~ Prayer Player ido, Wanwan

This is Yamatoyo no Momohime's theme.

Though she's the final boss, her song turned out less heavy and more fun-sounding.
There's plenty of bewildering powers out there in the world besides pyramid power,
but when I was in middle school, I was pretty bewildering myself...

Ending theme
All that Remains of Warriors' Dreams [4] Wanwan

This is the staff roll theme. [sic]

Since the cast members are pretty high-class, I made the music a little classy too.
Just by including a few gagaku elements, the song got a lot tighter.
Although I didn't have a shou sound source, let alone a biwa. Shou much for that...

Staff Roll theme
Shiokaze Dream Farewell to the Sea's Fathoms ~ Shiokaze Dream Wanwan

This is the ending theme. [sic]

It's a different version of the title screen music.
I found out for the first time that a "fathom" is a unit of measurement in the ocean.
So a "thousand fathoms" must mean it's really, really deep, huh?

Extra Stage theme
Nebura Stream Deep-Sea Nebula ~ Nebula Stream Wanwan

This is the Extra Stage theme.

Just like the previous game, the stage portion features a certain character
from 'The Last Comer', which was produced by the same development team.
I just wrote a normal(?) song, though, with no relation to all that.
The harp and vibraphone sounds used in this song have an all-powerful
feel to them that can express the feeling of the sea, stars and snow.
I feel like Riverbed Soul Saver incorporates these elements in a variety of forms.

Notes:

The title of this theme was originally misspelt as 深海星, which would mean "Deep-Sea Starry Sky".

Extra Stage boss - Yamata no Yato's theme
Source of the Starry River, Dragon of the Grass-Mowing Sword Wanwan

This is Yamata no Yato's theme.

It's a theme song for a drunkard, so the beginning has a strange, unstable tempo.
Following that, some kind of drunk-sounding, ondo-like phrase.
And then in a total reversal from that, a beautifully-regulated melody section.
I figured I would compose this one while drinking, fittingly enough, but that didn't work out.
I hear a lot about people composing songs while drinking,
but in my case I just go into rest mode and can't focus.

Phantasm Stage theme
Lost Capital of Lifeless Blasphemy Wanwan

This is the Phantasm Stage theme.

I intended to make this one really cool, since all the foreshadowing pays off here,
but in the end, it sounds like a ghost town with spirits floating around.
There's a cheery shikigami running amok in there, though, so it's fine this way.

Phantasm Stage boss - Abe no Kiyohime's theme
Yin-Yang-Shi Serpent [5] Wanwan

This is Abe no Kiyohime (Shizume Tsuchimikado)'s theme.

I made it with a suspicious and unpleasantly strong feeling.
Clearing this hidden stage is both difficult and fun, but even the small-fry enemies are pretty strong,
so I gave up partway through a whole lot of times. Shou much for *snip*

Notes

  1. "六花" literally means "six(-pointed) flower", but it's a word used to refer to snowflakes as well.
  2. This refers to one of An's spell cards in the last game.
  3. "Pyonko-bushi" rhythm is named for the "pyonko-pyonko-pyon" rhythm in the nursery song "The Frogs' Night Patrol" (蛙の夜まはり).
  4. Quote from a poem by Matsuo Bashō.
  5. "Yin-yang-shi" is the Chinese pronunciation of "陰陽師" ('onmyou practitioner').
