Shinki (神綺) is the creator of Makai, a world of demons whose entrance is located near the Hakurei Shrine in a mountain cave. During the events of Mystic Square Shinki allowed a tourist agency in Makai to organize trips for the demons there to the human world of Gensokyo. Various heroines from Gensokyo traveled to Makai to put an end to this intrusion, defeating Shinki.

Additional Information

Trivia

  • Some of Shinki's attacks were replicated in the game Samidare.
  • Fairies in stages 5 and 6 of Undefined Fantastic Object, which took place in Makai, have wings with similar colors and markings as Shinki's.
  • Byakuren Hijiri's spell card, Great Magic "Devil's Recitation", strongly resembles one of Shinki's attack forms.
  • Shinki's appearance in Magus in Mystic Geometries and Touhou Unreal Mahjong is unofficial, but her theme within the games, "AN ORDEAL FROM GOD" and "The Legend of God Demonic AN ORDEAL FROM GOD" (note that these two themes sound exactly the same), was composed by ZUN, making it to believe that this theme is Shinki's official second theme.

Fandom

  • Because of Shinki's dialog in which she mentions that everything in Makai is her creation, it is a popular theory that Alice is Shinki's daughter. However, there's been no further mention of this since then, and Perfect Memento states that Alice was once a human who became a youkai magician. It is unknown whether this is a retroactive change of continuity, merely a mistake by Akyuu, or if fans were mistaken from the beginning when thinking Alice was Shinki's daughter.
  • Pandæmonium was the capital of hell in Paradise Lost. Thus, Shinki is sometimes compared to Satan.
  • Shinki is compared to Satan and has a sword-throwing maid (Yumeko). Remilia is also compared to Satan and has a knife-throwing maid (Sakuya) ... Possibly the first idea for the Remilia/Sakuya pair?
  • Fans have interpreted her hairstyle to be an ahoge, literally "idiot hair", which influences fanon portrayals.
  • Shinki, along with Mima, is one of the most desired characters to be seen returning in a windows game.
    • Also, many fans were disappointed to not see Shinki re-return in Undefined Fantastic Object as many believed she will return in this game when Minamitsu Murasa said they were going to Makai in Stage 4.
    • Again, some fans did NOT take Byakuren's usage of Shinki's attack pattern very well at all, most expecting Mima or Shinki to make an appearance in the Windows games after being practically forgotten about. The sight of Byakuren filling Shinki's attack stroked these fans the wrong way.
  • Whether it was from the attack pattern or being in Makai, some fans speculate that Shinki has a relationship or acquaintance with Byakuren as it's shown in fanart, sometimes suggesting that Shinki taught Byakuren some of her attacks.
