東方文花帖 ~ Shoot the Bullet (romanized: Touhou Bunkachou, lit. Oriental Cultural Album) or abbreviated as StB by western fans, is a danmaku vertical-scrolling photography game, and is the ninth-and-a-half official game in the Touhou series. It was released as a tie-in to Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red.

Gameplay

Shoot the Bullet almost works like a normal danmaku game. You still have to dodge bullets which are thrown at you. The big difference is, is that you can't defeat a boss by simply shooting at it. You have to use Aya's camera which only clears danmaku after the part is photographed. To use her camera you press Z, so it will load to 100%. At the 100% you have to press Z again and point it at the boss. The shot is successful when the boss is featured in the photo. You will get a score if some stuff are present in the photo.

Name and Concept

The idea of Shoot the Bullet existed since Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. ZUN experimented with the idea but it didn't satisfy him and the idea would be sealed away until Imperishable Night. A character needed to be created who takes pictures, and in Phantasmagoria of Flower View Aya Shameimaru was introduced. A photographing tengu. In the same time as he started to create the new photograph game, the Touhou fanbook Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red was in production. A book with interviews with different Touhou characters, written by Aya. Eventually, the game was intended to be a minigame on the Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red CD but in eventually ended up as the 9.5th Touhou game.

The idea was to add new stages after time went by. [1] But ZUN later announced that there will not be new stages so he could move on with newer project. [2]

At March 14 of 2010 the game Double Spoiler was released. Also a photography game with Aya Shameimaru, but with other bosses and a new playable character. [3]

Story

In Shoot the Bullet, you play as Aya Shameimaru as she photographs the bosses from various Touhou games. However, no one ever reveals the reason for these, and in fact at one point it is pointed out that "No one knows the purpose of the photos, except Aya", and the only reason she does not shoot the opponents is "not to be nice, but because she doesn't want her bullets in the picture."

Music

The game soundtrack of Shoot the Bullet features six tracks. One title and menu theme and five photo themes. Just as the previous games, the title screen is an arranged version of Theme of Eastern Story from Akyu's Untouched Score vol.5. The fifth theme, Wind God Girl (風神少女) was also featured on the Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red CD and in Phantasmagoria of Flower View. ZUN said that track couldn't be missed in the game. The same track would later be used in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody as Aya's theme. The photo themes will be heard in chronological order when you proceed further in the game and thus numbered that way.

An arranged version of Retrospective Kyoto (レトロスペクティブ京都) would be used again in the "ZUN's music collection" cd Retrospective 53 minutes. In the CD that followed, Magical Astronomy, the third photo theme Sleepless Night of the Eastern Country (東の国の眠らない夜) was featured.

Press

ZUN announced the game on his blog Invisible Games and Japanese at November 13 in 2005 with some screenshots. [4] Later a few other screenshots in other blog posts where released. [5][6] In a later blog post in december the announcement was made where he would stand for the sell. [7] In the following month in just three days a few patches where released. [1][8][9][10]
