Here, lying in the mountains in the eastern country, is the comparatively peaceful Hakurei Shrine. The shrine's only maiden, Reimu, had isolated herself in the mountains for a while in order to train her spiritual powers.
"Train? That's going all right and everything, but I suddenly want to go back and sleep in my futon," Reimu begins to say to herself as she decides to head back to the shrine for the time being.
However, when she got back, the shrine had been completely overrun by youkai and other things that weren't human.[1]

Reimu "What the heck is all this!? I can't sleep with all this going on. Fine, I'll just have to give them a taste of my training!"

The problem is that Reimu, who hates training, didn't actually do much of it in the mountains - her main objective was to relax in the mountain's numerous hidden springs and experience the taste of autumn.

Genjii "My lady, the youkai seem to be controlled by an uncanny force this time. Therefore, their chief is most likely in the general vicinity. Moreover, I can sense that some sort of foreign culture is involved... Whatever the case may be, I suppose I shall accompany you."

Genjii, Reimu's loyal turtle servant, said worriedly.

Reimu "I was going to bring you even if you didn't ask, since I can't fly and everything..."

Then Reimu took Genjii, and, as always, the Hakurei Shrine's greatest treasure, the Yin-Yang Orb, and headed out to the shrine to figure out the cause behind the appearance of the youkai.
They would encounter many strange places and people alike...

Reimu "Heh, sure is strange." (said like Eriko Asagaoka)[2]

Translator's Notes

  1. ZUN names something here as part of a list: キチ○○. I'm not sure what that is, so I left it out.
  2. Eriko Asagaoka is a character from Izumi Takemoto's manga "Apple Paradise", a manga that he drew many other references from, as well. This particular phrase is said in a rough, masculine tone of voice.
