ようやく花見の季節が幻想郷に訪れた。
急にやってきたぶん盛大に、そして早々に過ぎ去ろうとする春を尻目に
人間や妖怪やその他諸々が催す花見だけが、
いつまでも繰り返し開かれていた。
だが、そこに集うのは人間や妖怪だけではなかったのだ……。

The curtain has fallen on the "Spring Snow Incident" that perpetually prevented spring's arrival,

and now the cherry blossom viewing season has finally arrived in Gensokyo.
Springtime came so suddenly, so magnificently, and yet it was ending too soon.
Despite this, humans, youkai, and many others were constantly hosting cherry blossom viewings.
But it wasn't just humans and youkai that were gathering there...

宴会で人を集めているモノの正体とは!? What is the true identity of the substance gathering people to the banquet?!
『東方萃夢想~ Immaterial and Missing Power.』(以下「萃夢想」)は、ZUN氏にとって初めて同人での共同開発で生まれた作品だ。ストーリー、テキスト、新キャラクターデザイン、一部音楽をZUN氏が担当し、それ以外の全部を黄昏フロンティアが担当。ユーザーへのお披露目となる動作試験版は「東方永夜抄」体験版と同時、2004年4月に開催された即売会「第1回博麗神社例大祭」でのことだ。 Immaterial and Missing Power is ZUN's first collaborative doujin work. The story, text, the new character's design, and some music was done by ZUN, and everything else was done by Twilight Frontier. The test version was unveiled to users alongside the demo release of Imperishable Night at the "1st Annual Hakurei Shrine Grand Festival", a sales event held in April 2004.
当時の同人ソフト界隈では二次創作格闘ゲームが全盛期で、特に格闘ゲーム制作で知られた渡辺製作所(現フランスパン)と、ノベルゲーム「月姫」でその名を知らしめたTYPE-MOONが共同開発した「MELTY BLOOD」は、ベースとなった「月姫」同様に大きな成功をおさめ、商業展開を果たした。こうした流れの中「どうせ作るなら、フランスパンに勝てるものを」という意気込みで制作が開始されたことは本誌前号の特集に詳しい。 In the doujinshi software community at that time, derivative fighting games were in their heyday. In particular, the game "MELTY BLOOD" was a joint effort between Watanabe Production (now called "French Bread"), known for its fighting games, and TYPE-MOON, which made its name with the visual novel "Tsukihime", and it proved to be as successful as the original "Tsukihime" in terms of commercial development. The game was launched with the enthusiasm of, "Whatever we make, it should be able to compete against French Bread", as described in the feature of this magazine's previous issue.
同年12月に完成版が頒布されて以降、約3年はこれまでと異なるスタイルの作品が続く。ZUN氏の中では「永夜抄」で制作がひと段落していたのだ。だが、作品への反響が無視できない大きさになったのも、ちょうどこのころ。04年は「香霖堂」の連載開始、「永夜抄」開発、「萃夢想」開発、音楽CD制作と濃い1年だった。 After the full version was distributed in December of the same year, a different style of production persisted for approximately three years. In ZUN's mind, production came to an end with "Imperishable Night". But it was also right around this time that the response to his works became too immense to ignore. 2004 was a busy year, with the serialization of Curiosities of Lotus Asia, the developments of Imperishable Night and Immaterial and Missing Power, and the production of the Music CDs.
「弾幕アクションゲーム」 "Danmaku Action Game"
「萃夢想」は「格闘ゲーム」と似てはいるが異なる作品だ。打撃系の攻撃も無いわけではないが、ボタンひとつで手軽に多くの弾を射出できたり、弾をダッシュ等ですり抜けたりできる東方らしさが大きな特徴となっている。 Immaterial and Missing Power" is a title similar yet distinguished from the concept of "fighting games". Although there is no lack of strike attacks, the main feature of the game is its Touhou-like qualities, such as the ability to easily shoot a large number of bullets with a single button press, or to dash through bullets.
ストーリーモードでは、全プレイヤーキャラクターに、それぞれ物語が用意されている。それぞれの視点からの話を楽しめるのだ。 In the story mode, all of the playable characters have their own stories to tell. One can enjoy the stories from each of their perspectives.
自分で操作する場合、各キャラ3種ずつのスペルカードから選んで使用する。敵の時にしか使わないスペルカードもいくつかあるぞ。 When you control your character, you can choose from three different spell cards for each character to use. There are also several spell cards that are only used by enemies.
東方では敵の弾に「かする」ことで得点を稼ぐ「グレイズ」というシステムがある。本作では、弾をすり抜けるので有効に使おう。 In Touhou, there is a system called "graze" in which players score points by "lightly scratching" enemy bullets. In this game, players can slip through bullets, so use this system effectively.
オートガード
本作では難易度がEASYから4段階存在しているが、中でもEASYモードではアクションが苦手な人向けに、オートガードを搭載している。通常のガードはキャラが向いている方向とは反対側に移動ボタン/レバーを操作するが、オートの場合はガード可能なら勝手にガードしてくれる。また対戦ではハンデとしてキャラの攻撃力を増減できるなど、いろいろな配慮が施されているのだ。
Auto-Guard
There are four difficulty levels in this title, starting with Easy. Easy Mode features an auto-guard system for those who are not good at action. Normal guarding involves pressing the directional buttons/moving the joystick opposite of the direction the character is facing, but in auto, the character will guard on her own if possible. In addition, the game is designed with various considerations, such as allowing players to increase or decrease their character's offensive abilities as a handicap in matches.
多彩なモード
各キャラの物語を楽しめる「ストーリーモード」をはじめ次々とCPUキャラと戦う「アーケードモード」、対人、対CPUなどの遊び方を完備。また本家のようなリプレイモードや音楽鑑賞モード、弾幕攻略の度合いがわかるリザルトも確認できるぞ。
Various Modes
The game features a "Story Mode" where players can follow the story of each character, an "Arcade Mode" where players battle CPU characters one after the other, a "Vs. CPU" Mode, etc. There is also a replay mode like the original games, a music appreciation mode, and results that show the degree of danmaku-based attacks.
パッチ Ver.1.11
黄昏フロンティア公式ホームページで現在も配布されている右記のバージョンのパッチを適用することで「アーケードモード」「対人」「対CPU」限定ではあるが、追加キャラとして紅魔館の門番こと紅美鈴でも遊べるようになる。本作を入手した方は、ぜひとも適用して欲しい。
Patch Ver.1.11
By applying the version patch shown on the right, which is still being distributed on the official Twilight Frontier website, you can select an additional playable character: Hong Meiling, the Scarlet Devil Mansion's gatekeeper. Though she's only available in "Arcade Mode," "Vs. Player" and "Vs. CPU". Those who have obtained this production are encouraged to apply it.
美鈴の選択画面。もともと体術を得意とするキャラだけのことはあって、本作でも少数派なゲンコツでの戦いを見せてくれる。もちろん弾幕もあるぞ。 Hong Meiling on the selection screen. This character has always been good at Taijutsu, and in this work as well, she displays her skills in knuckle-fighting, which is used by a minority of the characters. She uses danmaku as well, of course.

Throws knives and is able to stop time. The perfect chief maid. Meiling appeared in a later patch, so there are actually plenty of cameos pertaining the Scarlet Devil Mansion.

「妖々夢」では通りすがりだったので、今回初めて自宅の外観が描かれた(既視感)。人形の使い捨てっぷりが激しい。

Since she was merely a passerby in "Perfect Cherry Blossom", this was the first time the exterior of her home was depicted (déjà vu). She frequently uses and discards dolls.

二つ名に反してちゃんと動けるがかなりスロー。そのぶん魔法の威力は高く、特にクリムゾンフレアは当たるとヤバい。

In contrast to her title, she's able to move properly, albeit quite slowly. The power of her magic is quite high, especially her Crimson Flare attack, which is especially dangerous if it lands.

弾幕ごっこゲームにおいて刀を投げてこない肉体派。だが弾も出す。今回は半霊もそれなりに仕事をしている気がする。

A physical type who does not cast aside her sword in a game of danmaku. Though, she also shoots bullets. It would seem that this time, that her half-phantom is also working in its own way.

妖夢どころではない肉体派。吸血鬼の強さの源泉である肉体面の強靱さを見せてくれる。ドットの背丈と歩き方は必見。

She's also a physical type, moreso than Youmu. She demonstrates the physical toughness that is the source of a vampire's strength. Her stature and the way she walks are must-see points.

It's fun to have Yukari move in and out of her gaps. From the next installment onward, she's continue to be more and more flamboyant in that area. In a way, she's the main culprit in this case.

異変を起こした元凶の「鬼」。「永夜抄」と並行して開発、ということを考えるとこのタイミングでの登場も頷ける。
