A column dedicated to examining various legends scattered throughout the Touhou Project.
In this issue, writer Nobuyuki Shioda will pick apart the themes of Scarlet Weather Rhapsody.
We begin with the celestials, who are enjoying an increased presence recently.
The legends of heaven and celestials
The idea of celestial beings dwelling in heaven is an old one, and seems to originate in continental Asia. An easy example can be found in the various gods venerated in shrines. Beginning with their leader and sun goddess Amaterasu, the gods called the Amatsukami dwell in Takamagahara, a heavenly world. In the events known as Tenson Kourin, Amaterasu’s grandson Ninigi descended to earth and conquered Japan, which is the beginning of the nation of Japan as written in myth. The emperor held as the symbol of Japan is meant to be in an unbroken line from Ninigi, meaning that naturally the celestial realm and its inhabitants exist. This is of course the stuff of legend, and should not be believed wholesale.
Myths are interpreted differently from person to person, but on the subject of Tenson Kourin, it’s often seen as a fantastical depiction of the people of another nation crossing the sea to Japan. Even in the legends, Ninigi has mastered the technique of growing rice. For people without such technology, he might have appeared divine, and the newcomers may have even claimed to be the gods themselves. So, where is Takamagahara? Where did Ninigi and company originally come from? Our main clue is the Gishiwajin-den, as it is known in Japan, an ancient Chinese historical account. It describes the route to Yamatai-koku, which is often in discussions of exactly where it was. The journey written there involves crossing the sea from Korea, through Tsushima and Iki islands, to reach a place called Matsura-koku, thought to be in northern Kyushu. The route from there to Yamatai-koku goes further still, but having proof of a route from modern Korea to Kyushu is enough for our purposes. By the way, legends also mention Susanoo, a barbarous and chaotic god who came to Japan before Ninigi, having been exiled from Takamagahara. He is said to have gone to Shimane prefecture to demand the country from Ookuninushi, which might have involved a route going through Oki islands. Either way, it is natural to assume that Takamagahara was in either modern Korea or China.
Heavenly maidens and their feathered robes
When you think of celestials in Japan, one of your thoughts might be the story of the celestial maiden and her feathered robe, where she marries a human man. The story concerns a beautiful woman who descends from the sky carried by a thin cloth. As for why she comes to earth, this can be to bathe in a river or a hot spring, looking for men, tourism, or any number of other reasons. While bathing, her robe is stolen, which bars her from returning to heaven. She then quickly gives up the search and marries a local man. Typically, she bears children and lives a happy, if poor life, until one of her children finds the hidden robe. At this point, she parts ways with the man and returns to heaven. This however is only the overall pattern, and the details vary by the version. Sometimes there are no children, or they are left behind, or taken with her to heaven.
Such legends also come from China and Korea. Further, they bear a close similarity to the Tanabata story of Orihime and Hikoboshi. China has particularly old legends relating to Tanabata, going as far as some writings on it in the second century. In the era of the Tang dynasty when Japanese diplomats and students went back and forth, there were even secondary adaptations of such stories. Kengyuu and Shokujo (as the Chinese names are read in Japanese) are only permitted to meet once a year. She obtains permission from her father (or grandfather by the telling), the emperor who first decreed this restriction, to take a trip to the earth. She then descends to earth with the help of a thin black and white silk cloth, a familiar image. Her destination is the house of a local young man known for his beauty and wit. He soon asks her to stay the night so he will not be lonely. The next morning, Shokujo returns to heaven, but she returns every evening. Eventually the man learns that she is married to Kengyuu and becomes jealous, trying to tie her down. However, they eventually part ways, ending their relation. Shokujo feels no guilt over this and does not consider this affair to be wrong, citing that heaven and earth have different ways of looking at things. Still, the story says that her love for the young man was genuine as well, and thus the Shokujo star (known to us now as Vega) lost its light for a year.
Japan’s stories of celestial maidens have some variations too, where they would like to return to their husband in heaven, and live on earth only because they cannot go back. The version told in Shimane prefecture says that on returning to heaven, she taught the man how to grow a tree that would reach for heaven, much like in the story of Jack and the beanstalk. This would allow him to live in heaven, but since he did not respect the rules of heaven, he was forbidden from meeting her more than once a year, making the origin of the Tanabata story.
India’s celestial maidens, the apsaras
China’s Shokujo is worshiped in Taoism - considered one of China’s three major faiths - as a relation to the celestial emperor. Likewise she can be seen as a divine relation to Seioubo, the queen mother of the west and Taoist goddess. The Chinese image of celestial maidens - Tennyo - is roughly indistinguishable from Sennyo[1]. The ‘peach blossom spring’ that hermits are said to live in appear in various settings, and once again we can see no small amount of influence from Chinese Buddhism here. In the first place, Taoism grew out of syncretizing multiple faiths around China, even incorporating characters from popular works such as Guan Yu from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Sun Wukong from Journey to the West. It’s a very flexible faith. Buddha, Maitreya, Amitābha and Guanyin all became Taoist gods, so clearly there was a lot of familiarity with Buddhism already.
Buddhism began in India, and while this varies by the era, in India it was usually in a minority compared to Hinduism. Early Buddhism focused on enlightenment through asceticism and harsh training, making it unpopular with common people. What reached China was that early Buddhism, which connected with Confucianism to develop in its own way. In India at the time, there were some changes in the faith on the basis that a softer approach would be needed to bring ordinary people in, and prompted some examination of India’s older faiths (such as Brahmanism, which later morphed into Hinduism). This led to Mahāyāna Buddhism, Vajrayāna and more. The Journey of the West is the story of Xuanzang, a real person, going to India to receive these new Buddhist teachings, albeit fictionalized as entertainment. It is thought that this is how Vajrayāna reached China. Vajrayāna has some sexual elements to it, which was resisted by many in the strongly Confucian China of the day, but on the other hand, others were quite happy. When one of the Japanese missions to China returned with the latest in Buddhism, or when Saichou and Kuukai came back from China to preach, their brand of Buddhism included much of Vajrayāna.
The base form of the Tennyo is the Apsara, a sea spirit in ancient Indian legends who dances for the gods. A being somewhere between a fairy spirit and a god. Once again, they live in heaven, wear a special cloth to fly, and are seen descending to earth and marrying human men in some stories. Similarly, Zoroastrianism has the Peri, which were syncretized into Islam as the Houri, who welcome men into heaven after they have died. The head of the Apsaras is Lakshmi, wife to Vishnu; in this way, we see that the legends of the various celestial maidens show them married to human men. The Apsaras had husbands known as Gandharva, skilled musicians who would play music for the gods. We see some commonality here with the celestial men and women Kinnara and Kinnaris, who were seen as musicians. Parallels with Shokujo and the like are hard to miss as well. In this way, celestials became known as Buddhist guardian gods with the spread of Vajrayāna, along with being depicted in mandalas and the like, which spread to China and Japan. Their influence can be felt in the Buddhist Kisshouten, the Japanese Ame no Uzume, and so on.
Winged ones
By the way, winged people occupy a very similar spot image-wise as celestials. Angels are of course the obvious ones, but this too can be thought to derive from Indian and Persian celestial maidens. Christianity and Islam sprang out of Judaism. The background to Judaism being a monotheistic faith goes back to when many of the Jewish people were held as near-slaves in Babylon, and would have discovered Persian Zoroastrianism then. This is one of many theories, but Zoroastrianism is a result of taking old Indian and Persian faiths as a base to create a monotheistic faith around Ahura Mazda, whereupon the old gods became angel-like creatures known as Yazata. Biblical angels having distinct personalities, bearing children with human women, falling due to their pride and so on might be because they began as various gods and other celestial beings.
Stories of winged humanoid gods can be found in Egyptian, Greek and Oriental legends as well. For example, the half-bird half-human harpies of Greek legends are seen as monstrous, but there are legends where, much like other stories of celestial maidens, they bear children with humans. Japan also has its own half-bird half-human creature known as Karyoubinga, which the Bondenkoku and Otogi Soushi texts confirm to have strong ties to celestial maidens and heaven. Mystia Lorelei is based on the ‘night sparrow’ youkai, but this could be considered a Japanese harpy, while Lorelei is a type of German spirit that misleads and confuses humans, also known as sirens. Having originally come from sea spirits, Tennyo also have a strong connection to mermaids.
